We were there for 4 very hot nights in August and we enjoyed our time so much we decided (after much procrastination) that a review was in order. We stayed in the Summertime Blues (ironic considering the 100 degree days!) and were very pleased that the a/c was up to the task. The basement saltwater pool was a tribute to the Portland of the past and looked great but considering the weather we gave it a pass. There is a nice little pub in the basement with some live music and the restaurant (for breakfast) was great. An extra at no additional cost was the somewhat deranged naked guy wandering along the street and lying next to our table for a short time..............oh well........inner city character........... (but what is with the large number of obviously mentally ill wandering the streets of Portland - I have not seen its like anywhere!) The shared bathroom was no problem; even though the hotel was full we never had to share it with anyone! The front desk staff were uniformly friendly and helpful and our bikes were easily checked in and out of a secure area. Best of all is the music theme throughout with wonderful wall murals and paintings! Just the kind of cool place we love! Pros include the location and the decor, cons are the lack of parking and the early street noise from garbage trucks! Nevertheless, we loved the Crystal and will stay in a McMenamin's hotel on our next visit to Oregon.

Stayed here for one night to go to a show at the Crystal Ballroom. Super friendly front desk staff made check-in easy. City parking lot nearby (Brewery Blocks) was a great deal, $16 for overnight. Inside the hotel, the saltwater soaking pool is fantastic; rooms are old and small but have nice amenities (including bathrobes to get to the pool and shared bathrooms.) Bathrooms were readily available and immaculate- not dorm style, one toilet/shower per. Room was clean but bed and pillow were lumpy. Dinner and drinks at Zeus Cafe were excellent. If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs...very noisy from rain on the roof, people partying on the street below, couples lovin' it up in rooms next door/above/below us, and early AM garbage trucks. If it's available, check out the deal that includes the Popina Swim Boutique gift certificate. Best swimsuit shopping experience ever, bar none!

Room Tip: The Stark St side is very noisy late at night & early AM. Rm 306 & 307 are right next door t...

We stayed here for one night because a friend's wedding was just down the street at the Crystal Ballroom. It was exactly what we wanted: comfortable, clean, affordable, and very convenient. Parking was easy on the street opposite the entrance (even on a Saturday night) and cost us exactly $2.40 for 20 hours. Powell's Books and a few of my other favorite places were within steps. The rooms are small, as advertised, and the bathrooms are down the hall. So that means people shuffle down in the provided bathrobes. I never had to wait though, and the bathrooms were perfectly nice, and kept very clean.
We met friends at the bar downstairs for a drink before the wedding, and the Zeus Cafe looks like a good place to spend a little time as well.
The artsy interior and great location make this a fun place to stay, and I'd do it again.

Room Tip: Ours was on the 4th floor and we had a nice view of downtown.

We had a wonderful time at the Crystal Hotel. We stayed in the Black Keys themed room and had a private balcony on the fourth floor. A spectacular view, and well-styled room and exciting plans for the evening, there was little that could have gone wrong. The staff was extremely friendly, they even took the extra time to figure out what max I needed to take to get to Beaverton, and printed me out the directions. Even though we didn't have a private bathroom, the shared bathrooms were private (key access), very clean and had everything you needed. The restaurant downstairs served a great breakfast, and overall we could not have been happier with our stay.

Room Tip: A room with its own bathroom would have been nice, but if you are only staying a night or two, the s...

This is a very unique hotel! My girlfriend and I stayed there back in Feb of 2012 and really enjoyed ourselves. I have stayed at Kennedy School before and was excited to try another of their hotels. Upon checking in we went right up to the room. The rooms are on the smallish side and there was no TV but we weren't there to stay in the room anyway. The only downside we found was that you can hear pretty much everything through the walls and we had to pound the wall one night as we heard some romantic happens somewhere close by. Sharing bathrooms with the floor can be a little odd too if you aren't used to it and my girlfriend did walk in on someone who forgot to lock the door. The pool in the basement was pretty cool and we had it all to ourselves one night. The location was awesome and we were pretty much able to walk to everywhere we wanted. Overall, I would go back and stay here but fully realize that this type of accommodation may not be for everyone.

We really enjoy this unusual hotel in the heart of Portland. Easy walking distance to so many stores and restaurants. If you rent a king bed room you get a bathroom too but the queen rooms are very close to bathrooms and they provide bathrobes. Our one complaint was the dim lighting in the hallways and bedrooms. Difficult to read by and watch your step on the stairs! Live music at night in the basement and an amazing hot relaxing pool. Restaurant on site has a tasty breakfast.

Room Tip: Rooms 208-211, 308-311 and 408-411 are a little bigger queen bed rooms. They do face the main drag s...
