“Eccentric hotel odd smells...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 September 2013

I was in town for Feast Portland. I booked into the Crystal and took one of the 6 rooms that come with their own en suite bathroom ( actually a shower room), now this place is an eccentric throwback kind of joint. Most of the rooms have a shared shower and toilet - ok if you're into that retro 'Deadwood' thing. All rooms have AC, and none have tv. If you know this in advance, then cool. Also each room has been themed after a song with the lyrics painted in odd scripts all around the room and themed beds. Unfortunately my first room ( midnight hour )had a very unpleasant smell, that wouldn't go away. Coupled with the fact that there was no wifi access either meant I requested a change. A trip downstairs to the helpful staff saw re-roomed, albeit in a cheaper smaller room as all the en suite ones were booked, in no time at all. The feel of the place is vintage and rock and roll, and oddly it does kind of work. The shared bathroom thing is a pain especially if you have to answer a call of nature at night, don't forget your room key, as you won't get into the loo without it or back into your own room either! They should install more wifi transmitters - I don't care about tv as long as I can get online and stream or surf. In all a pretty good value place too v well situated, and staffed by good people. They raved on the phone when I booked about their heated saltwater soaking pool. I tried it, it seems like just an oversized spa bath in a damp and dark room. Maybe you need to be drunk and with a bunch of people before it gets really fun...

Room Tip: The en suite includes a shower, there are no rooms with baths, or fridges in the rooms.

We stayed at the Crystal Hotel for 2 nights (weeknights) while in Portland. The check-in was quick and easy, the staff were very friendly, and the restaurant connected to the hotel served good food and drink.

We usually do not care about the size of our hotel room, but this room was particularly small. There was very little space for toiletries around the sink. Plenty of room to hang your clothes, but not much room after you put your suitcase on the suitcase (holder? carrier? thing?). The location was wonderful. Close to downtown. You could see Powell's Bookstore from the hotel. Close to great restaurants, bars and shopping and there was a Whole Foods right across the street. We thought nothing of the shared bathroom. It was always clean and unoccupied.

Cons:
Room is very small
Room had an unusual musty smell that may or may not have contributed to my head cold the day we checked out. **It is an old building with lots of charm. ( I am highly allergic to dust)
NOISE!!! Garbage and recycling are collected every night around 0230. It is not quiet. The sound of the truck picking up the recycling caused a car alarm to go off...
No air conditioning (not usually an issue, but having to keep the window open with the garbage truck noise was pretty awful).

Pros:
Great price.
Great location.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Themed rooms (we were in the "Somebody to Love" room : )

Overall, the stay here was an interesting experience, though I do not think that I would stay at this hotel again. For I am old and enjoy quiet and nice smelling environments.

Room Tip: We were on the 4th floor. Our window faced Jake's Place. It was very noisy (garbage trucks) and...

We enjoyed our stay at the Crystal Hotel including the bar downstairs and the soaking pool. This was a really fun, unique place to stay and was in a great location. We were able to walk or catch public transit to everything we wanted. We stayed in a room using the shared bathrooms. Both the room and bathrooms were clean but we did have to walk down a flight to find available restrooms around 9 a.m. on our check out day. It appears that is a popular time to take a shower. The other issue we ran into was that both the trash and the recycling were picked up on the street the night we stayed. This meant being woke up twice in the early morning hours. Other than that we did not have any issues with street noise. The hotel also held our bags the next day until very late in the evening which was really convenient for our schedule. Overall we would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone looking to save a few dollars.

We always enjoy staying at McMenamin's historic properties. The Crystal is no exception! Convenient to everywhere you want to go downtown and though no hotel parking, lots of garages nearby. Friendly, helpful staff and comfortable room made our stay great. As always, the soaking pool is an added bonus. The only annoying thing is the very loud crashing of glass from the recycling truck very early in the morning. But, hey, it's a city. They're noisy.

Room Tip: get a suite on the 3rd or 4th floor

This hotel has been refurbished in a beautiful way. The staff are friendly and they have a good range of food & drinks at the restaurant. I have stayed at this place a couple times now, and I would certainly recommend it to friends. The place is located in the center of everything, and it's close to some great shopping and other restaurants. I'll likely stay here again.

Room Tip: Try to choose a room that's on a higher floor, or try to get a room that isn't facing Burnsi...

We stayed here for two nights in August, and loved every minute. The service was great, and the noise wasn't anywhere near as distracting as stated in previous reviews. We loved the decor, and the atmosphere of the place. Tired of the generic, white-washed style of your typical chain hotel? This place is the perfect fix! We stayed here as a convenient concert stop, but we vowed to come back just for the place in and of itself. We loved the pool, as well as the architecture! We wouldn't consider staying anywhere else on our next Portland excursion! Thanks!

We spent two nights at the lovely Crystal Hotel and we have vowed to return! It was our first stay at a McMenamin's hotel. So impressed. The Crystal has been lovingly restored and improved. It is beautiful throughout. The theme rooms are beautiful, comfortable, clean and so homey. The shared bathrooms were awesome, clean and always available, there are many on each floor. Hotel provides a nice robe, so if you need one, you are covered (literally). No problems with that whatsoever! There was a bit of street noise, but the blackout curtains helped with that. We all slept well. We had a 2nd floor room and our daughter was on the 4th floor, in a lovely corner room, we all felt safe and secure. Staff were wonderful; helpful, friendly and informative. . . .exactly what you need to make you feel welcome. I was worried about walking to the off hotel parking a block away in the early morning and staff were reasurring and correct! Easy walk. Bring your bathing suit! We loved, loved, loved the salt water soak tub, truly magical. Best location....very close to the Powells, The Pearl District and all that awesome Portlandia food! Can't wait to return. Almost hate to rate it, I'd like to keep it our secret. Will book our next anniversary here!
