“Wacky and Fun”
Reviewed 6 March 2014

We stayed just one night at the Crystal Hotel, wish it was longer. I had read some of the reviews prior to booking and noticed that there were a few comments about the noise from the street. We were pleasantly surprised when this was not our experience, in fact there was very little noise. The hotel itself was a delight, all of the staff that we dealt with were wonderful, friendly and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable (shout out to Rich). We took in the March 4th Marching Band at the Crystal Palace, and will likely be heading down next year just for that as it was so much fun.

We had such a wonderful stay here. Its a bit funky, but that's what we like. The location is fantastic and the front desk staff were sooo very helpful. The bathrooms were spotless and we never saw another person on our floor. The soaking tub was perfect, and what a surprise it was to hear great music in the bar. I was also floored to get a call the next day notifying me that I'd left my sweater. Since I was already in Hood River by that point, he offered to mail it to me. I received it today - and I am soo very thankful.

My husband and I spent one evening at the Crystal Hotel and enjoyed spending an evening enjoying downtown Portland. We parked our car in a parking garage just a block and a half away, checked in, enjoyed a little wine in our room and hit the town. We walked to the Portland City Grill, it was chilly this time of year, so ear muffs would have been helpful, but luckily it wasn't too bad. We had appetizers there and met a lovely couple visiting from Santa Barbara, CA. We shared the booth with them and chatted and enjoyed the beautiful city views from the 30th floor. We then went to Kell's Irish pub for a pint and whiskey wings, then headed back to the Crystal where we had yet more appetizers in Al's Den which was packed, we lucked out and found 2 seats next to a nice local couple and listened to the local band. We ended our evening in the hotel's 100 degree soaking pool which is inside, not as good as the Edgefield, but definitely well worth bringing your suit to enjoy a nice soak.

Room Tip: Choose the side on Stark St., it's quieter.

Okay, sure: you have to share a bathroom (there are a few on each floor). But the price and the gorgeous rooms at this place more than make up for that! Each room has a band theme; ours was Arcade Fire, with lyrics painted on the walls. The bed was comfortable, the room was clean (albeit small), and the shared bathroom was always open (and directly across the hall). ectThe location (downtown and near the Pearl) was perfect. The only "meh" was the restaurant--I've never been impressed with McMenamins food or service.

Room Tip: The Arcade Fire room is great and directly across the hall from one of the shared bathrooms.

I recently stayed at the Crystal hotel after a friend recommended it. It was great for a quick stay in Portland. If you're looking for something funky/unique, reasonably priced, and with a good location, this hotel is a good option. You'll have to share a bathroom/shower area (robes are provided), but they were very clean and private. The street noise could be an issue for some, but I slept through it. Oh, and the bed was comfortable... Enjoy!

We are a fan of the Mcmenamins properties so we may be a bit biased in the review. We like the funky nature of their hotels and the Crystal is no exception. Small and quaint with interesting pubs upstairs and downstairs. The soaking tub is wonderful. They have live entertainment each evening with low key players so don't expect anything rowdy. The location is great and we were able to find street parking reasonably easy (although you have to feed the meter between 8am-7pm Mon-Sat). Garage parking is available close by.
If we had any gripe it would that the sanitation workers emptying the local dumpsters did so at great volume in the middle of the night. Not necessarily the fault of the hotel (although the windows are single pane) and they are upfront about outside noise as they offer earplugs when you check in. The noise only occurred on the first night (Thursday) otherwise all calm for the 2nd night.
We had breakfast in the restaurant the first morning and it was very good but maybe a bit too much. Of course their beers are excellent and they have a flavor for most tastes. Terminator Stout is my favorite.
The service for the most part was great. The front desk managers were very considerate in responding to a problem that arose during our stay by comping our second night. Stuff happens sometimes and we were glad that they acknowledged it and made a nice gesture.
Thanks for a memorable anniversary stay!

Room Tip: The Burnside St. side may be quieter.
