This hotel, like all of the Mcmenamins, is FABULOUS!!! This hotel is full of history, and artwork everywhere you turn! The soaking pool in the basement was a definite bonus. Tucked in a very eccentric part of town made is a super fun runaway. We definitely enjoyed the local hangouts. This is a european style hotel with bathrooms down the hallway. I didnt mind that one bit!! This place is so full of culture, and different from your "usual" hotel. I will continue to hit all of the Mcminemens locations and love every one for being so unique. You've just got to stay here and try it out for yourself! I highly recommend it unless you prefer staying at the Marriot, then you might not appreciate the unique edge to this place.

I really enjoyed my stay here. From precious reviews, I expected noise to be a much bigger problem. My 3rd floor room faced SW Stark St, and even with my window open, I had a good night's sleep, waking only momentarily at city recycling and trash pick-ups. A bathroom was always available when I needed one, and boy were they kept scrupulously clean. The queen room was small, but absolutely perfectly sized if all you needed was a place to sleep and refresh yourself. The soaking pool was blissfully empty when I visited and a nice place to meditate. For the easy accessibility to the rest of the city, this place is a real bargain.

We booked the Hammerhead package (simple queen room with food/bar cash credits) and stayed 2 nights. We broke out of a pattern: sterile hotel rooms with amenities where you fuss about every flaw, real or imagined.

Yup, the place is a refurbished old downtown hotel with city noises, city traffic, city characters ...and THAT should be the point if you stay here. This is not the place to sprawl out in your room and watch TV (I'm not sure if any rooms have them). You get a sink, a chair, a bed in a fabulous downtown location.
Fit everything in an airline size carry-on bag; bring flip-flops to go down the hall to the bathroom and turn the lock to avoid an awkward moment with other guests.

Go out on the town and stay out late. (we had tickets to a concert at The Aladdin; 10 minute fare with tip was about $15).
We panicked the first morning at 9 AM. We woke up in 'tourist mode' and rushed downstairs hoping they still served breakfast. That was the last time we rushed for the remainder of the trip. The weather was fabulous and we converted over to 'traveler mode', took an outdoor table, and spent two hours finishing breakfast. Ditto for happy hour at the end of the day.

The restaurant/bar meals and service were always excellent and the Hammerhead package was a good value.

The hubby and I stayed here one night on Monday, April 28, 2014. We chose a room without a bathroom but we did have a sink in our room and shared bathroom with shower down the hall. Our room was #408 called "Ryan's Song". It was a small room, small bed, very dark blue in color, classic McMenamins details with writings on the walls and stenciled borders, no frig, no television but did have WIFI and helpful staff upon checking in. Our room overlooked Burnside Street so it was very busy but once night time came we did not hear the outside noise. All the bars are open for McMenamins Passport Tripsters and for needed stamps for the Crystal Ballroom and Lola's Room we received a tour of the venues which was the highlight of our stay. Our tour guide's name was "T" - he was fun. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the Ballroom's history and gave us the inside scoop about "Lola" - who is named after one of the bars on the premises. We really enjoyed ourselves touring the renowned Crystal Ballroom - famous for its "floating" dance floor, beautiful chandeliers, original artwork and paintings.
I can't think of anything negative about our stay. All the bars were eclectic and the hotel had a soaking pool for guests. The only downside is the shared bathroom but if one is willing to pay more you can just upgrade..:)

I've written a more detailed review about the Crystal from a previous stay in August 2013 for information and amenities. This review is for a stay April 10th 2014 for one night. It is my third stay at the Crystal Hotel. I also stayed October 2013 while attending a Halloween Ball at the Crystal Ballroom. We've been in the Wake up room (floor 3), the Black Keys room (floor 4) and now the Werewolf room (floor 2.)
Our August 2013 stay was great. Our October 2013 stay was wonderful, no complaints and we enjoyed the Black Keys room on the quiet 4th floor, as well as the small balcony. This April 2014 stay was not 3 times is a charm. I had been looking forward to celebrating my birthday, and instead had a very disappointing stay at the Crystal.

Avoid the werewolf room especially and probably most rooms on the 2nd floor facing Jake's restaurant in general. This location is exceedingly noisy beyond just downtown noises we experienced before and didn't really bother us on other stays. This time, there were street performers with microphones, rowdy drinking crowds, loud music venues until very late. (not on a weekend either.) Not conducive to sleeping at all. We experienced the infamous garbage trucks on our prior visits, but they were never so awful we were bothered by them. This time, the glass compactor truck stopped right beneath our window in the wee hours of the morning, crashing and grinding up recycling glass. We were startled awake thinking windows were breaking or some disaster was about to ensue. This would not be helped by earplugs.

The werewolf room itself was pretty bad. We like the quirky style, music themed rooms and darker interiors of the Crystal. This room however was not fabulous. It was stifling hot when we entered. The thermostat read 86! We attempted to turn on the AC unit which would only stay on for a few minutes at a time. The window barely opens, which didn't help the heat, and let in all the noise as well. This room also had the misfortune of sharing a wall with one of the shared bathrooms on this floor. Which meant the metal toilet paper holder is mounted to the other side of our bedroom wall. We could hear it clanking, and everything everyone was doing in the bathroom our entire stay, which is never what you want to hear in your hotel bedroom!

We did enjoy the soaking pool as always. And we love the location where we can walk to restaurants and Powell's books. We're fairly easy to please and can over look a lot of issues. But this was a really disappointing birthday stay overall. We left tired and cranky. I feel bad writing a more negative review of a hotel I've enjoyed a lot in the past. But I think people should be aware of these issues and plan accordingly. Not sure if there will be a fourth stay...

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the 2nd floor facing Jake's restaurant.

Ariella35, thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. I think it's totally fair for everyone to know their options when staying with us. We are in the center of downtown, and the noise around us can be "something else"... I'm hoping you try us another time, and let that fourth try convince you that we're not like any other hotel in the city. We're so much more.

For our honeymoon, one of our stops was Portland, and I decided on the Crystal Hotel because it looked cute, weird and fun - as well as being affordable. Slap bang in the middle of downtown Portland, we stayed in the Arcade Fire room and we loved it. It was constantly in a state of semi-darkness, which may annoy some people, but which I enjoyed. Our bed was comfortable, the complimentary dressing gowns were pillowy, the soaking pool was divine. Breakfast was not included, but as it's close to plenty of eateries, that was no problem.

We really enjoyed our stay here. You have to be ready for something a bit different as we stayed in a small, adorable room with no bathroom (the bathroom was across the hall and always empty, but not in the room). Absolutely cute cute cute room though! And the bathroom though shared was extremely clean and well cared for with a great shower as well. Loved the salt water hot soaking tub downstairs. . . . very special. We will try McMenamins hotels again!

Room Tip: They do have some King beds with bathrooms in the room should that be important to you!
