I booked on a promotional rate of $87 a nite and must have gotten the worst room in the hotel. The room had a distinct musty odor and the ac unit made a sound like a steadily dripping faucet constantly, even when not running. Also it faced out onto Airport way which is a busy road with traffic noise well into the night. The hotel was fully booked, or so they said, so I was unable to transfer to another room. Other than the room the hotel seemed ok with a decent breakfast.

Stayed one weekend night in a King Evolution room. Pleasant, comfortable, no real problems. I've stayed at all 3 of Portland's HGI (Lake Oswego, Beaverton, and PDX) now, and this property appears the oldest.

PROS:

-usually the lowest priced room of the 3 HGI's
-very spacious room, seems about 25% larger compared to the same room type at the other 2 HGI's
-24 hour airport shuttle; has park and fly rate option
-next door to McDonald's
-quiet, didn't hear any planes or street noise
-friendly staff (front dest, restaurant)
-HD programming with good number of channels
-very comfortable bed, responsive HVAC, good bathroom
-very well-padded carpeting, usually don't even notice this! Maybe recently installed.

CONS:

-wireless HSIA only--slow, and cuts in and out--very annoying.
-fitness center extremely hot, no temp control! 2 treadmills with TV (1 not working), 1 elliptical (no TV!) with loose foot pad

Room Tip: Probably the most economical option at PDX for a major chain

I'm learning to dismiss some of the bad ratings as people who aren't happy unless they're complaining! For $87 per night this was an excellent deal. Traffic on I-5 was a nightmare and when we checked in we had zero time to spare before the start of the Highland Games that brought us to Portland. The desk clerk pulled up the reservation and had out room keys in our hands in about 10 seconds flat. Rooms were clean, and more than adequate. Breakfast was quite acceptable for $8.95, and service was extremely friendly. The room decor is not that of a boutique hotel, but we just wanted a good clean place to stay for 2 nights and it was bang-on.

This HGI is an older property but appears well-maintained. The hotel is located on Airport Way about a mile or two from PDX and offers a shuttle. Parking is limited; if the lot in front is full be sure to check in first and get your room key as you won't be able to get back in through the rear or side doors (without your room key) and you'll be forced to walk all the way back around to the main entrance.

Checking in was quick, I was greeted warmly by the front desk staff and I was in my room on the top (4th) floor in just a couple of minutes. Like all HGI's this property has a small shop with food and beverage items, an indoor pool, a well-equipped workout room, and a guest laundry. Parking and internet are both no-cost features of this property, which is nice.

My king bedded room was clean, nicely furnished, and offered all the usual HGI features (flat-panel TV, microwave, coffee maker, mini-fridge). The HVAC system was adequate. The bathroom was clean and I was pleased by the water-volume produced by the shower head. A great shower, not the dribble or trickle you get in some hotels. The bed had a spotless duvet, a nice selection of pillows, and I had a great night's sleep.

Despite the fact that the hotel is located on a busy road (Airport Way) and although the hotel is located directly beneath the approach to the south runway at PDX, there was little or no noise and I had a peaceful sleep.

I've now stayed at all of the Hilton brands operating out near PDX (there is an Embassy Suites and a Hampton located much closer to the terminal) and while the Embassy Suites offers a somewhat nicer room, the PDX Hilton Garden Inn is in my view a better overall value, with rates that run $30 - $40/night less than either the Embassy Suites or the Hampton.

I am a long-time Hilton Diamond HHonors member and I look for value and an enjoyable stay for my money. While this HGI isn't the newest or best property in the brand I've stayed at, I am happy to say that I found this property to be acceptable on all levels, staffed with friendly and professional people, and offering a good lodging value in all respects. I recommend this Hilton Garden Inn.

Room Tip: Ask for a 4th floor room facing the back/rear

Great place to crash before or after flight. I highly recommend the breakfast even if you don't have status and pay for it.

Not sure why all the negative reviews on this property. Was here for 1 night before early morning flight out. I needed pickup from National Car rental instead of from airport and staff was extremely accommodating about it. Shuttle drivers friendly and on time. Overall decor, lobby and room met standards I expected for a Hilton Garden Inn. I stayed on a first floor room and I didn't experience any bad street noise...then again, maybe I was lucky that night along with being I am a heavy sleeper. Not too many non-fast foody places to choose from but hey, it's an airport hotel. Overall satisfied.
