I'd choose the hampton inn and suites over the rivers edge for sure. Start off by giving up your car keys cause it's valet only for $25 a night and against "fire regulations" for you to keep your keys. (They have no parking with this hotel - so they rent from the city). Then be prepared to listen to sounds of running toilets all night, and be sure to stack up on late night snacks as no food or room service (not even tea) after 10:pm unless you're interested in a handful of cashews for $9.00, or a twix bar for $2.50 from the well overpriced mini bar. No coffee or tea available in the room as most hotel and spas. Call yourself a spa - but there's no pool. No breakfast included, no snacks on arrival (just water) no real duvet or comforter - just sheets and the service staff... Hmmm. When we were checking in the front desk attendant was so bored she was leaning over the reception desk with her head in her hands the whole time we were checking in.

Pluses... Everything was clean except the toilet seat, the view is nice and the balconies are large (shared with neighbouring rooms), nice overall styled hotel, and 8 free bikes for rent.

At over $200 a night - I'd choose somewhere else to stay.

Hello Traveler!

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about River's Edge Hotel & Spa. I am very sorry for the lackluster appearance and demeanor of our front office staff. Trust me, our Management Team has read your review and is working to correct that behavior as I type this. That is definitely not how we want our guests to be greeted.

I'm sorry that you didn't find the option of the late night snack baskets, and mini bar offerings, to your satisfaction. It's always a catch-22 in every hotel to offer mini bars. We chose to do it because we listened to the feedback of our guests wishing that there was "something" in the rooms to purchase after the restaurant closed. So our owners graciously bought us brand new refrigerators so that we could accommodate our guests - either by them bringing in their own food, or by purchasing from what we have. It's certainly not for everyone, but overwhelmingly popular.

As for the coffee and tea - we do have coffee makers in all of our rooms with a supply of tea, coffee, and condiments to go with it - perhaps you just missed it? In addition, for those who don't want to be bothered with making it themselves (Hello! That would totally be me!), we offer freshly brewed coffee, hot tea, and flavored water in the Spa Lobby every day, all day.

I do hope that the next time you are in Portland you will give us another try. Take a look at our rates for the fall, winter, and spring...it might make you decide to give us another try...I sure hope so!

All my best,

Christine

Cons: Do not stay in room 425 due to hearing guests, water running, toilets flushing all night. No concierge, Lack of knowledgeable staff to give recommendations for dining and site seeing. Light rail system is not as conveniently located as said on site. Car service is only available when valet are not busy and can only go to Pioneer square area. We did not use due to valet being occupied the entire time.

Pros: Suki at the front desk. She was excellent, getting us a new room after the first night issues and very helpful..A smile goes a long way and great customer service! The gym was impressive. A variety of cardio machines, weight lifting equipment, yoga classes and trainer on staff. River views were nice.

Overall if you want to partake in activities downtown, stay downtown.

Dear Marathontravel: My apologies that your first room was uncomfortable, shared your comments with Engineering to inspect and treat the controllables. Glad to hear that the second room worked out to your satisfaction. We shall also watch the guest traffic in the lobby more closely so that our lobby staff is able to help guests with recommendations for their Portland visit, that service is normally one of our strong suits, will make sure we have adequate staff to absorb the busy times. Shuttle drop off range has been expanded to all downtown areas between the river and the 405 for restaurants, shopping, attractions, parks, theater, etc. Thank you for sharing your comments and for staying with us. Best regards, Russ Abell, GM

Pros:
Great value for price (AAA and Government discounts)
Friendly staff
Very clean
Nice location
Courtesy Lincoln navigator that drops guests off to certain locations (free)

Cons:
Slow wifi
limited staff at spa (they were booked the whole time)
No pool or outside jacuzzi
Nothing impressive about food/drinks at restaurant
The courtesy navigator (about 4 days before our stay) changed their policy and they no longer picked guests up (when they were availability allowed) and they changed their distance they would drop off guests to where it was very limited. When I booked initially that was not the case, so even though it was a bonus, it was kind of a bummer.

Overall: I'd definitely be willing to stay there again, but I hope they revert their courtesy car policy. Because it was kind of a tradeoff choosing this hotel staying a few miles from downtown rather than directly downtown at a different hotel. But it was a wash because of the free courtesy car shuttle pick up and drop off. It was a very clean and modern hotel and had very friendly staff.

Room Tip: Don't really have any tips, sorry. a

Dear Jimmy A: thanks for your review and the pros and cons. Regarding the drop off shuttle we have expanded the drop off zone to include all the downtown area between the river, the 405 and Burnside so that our guests can access all the neighborhoods of downtown, thanks for your feedback on that one on our guest survey and Trip Advisor. Next time you come in give us a call to make a Spa reservation, beforehand, not always necessary but being here once you probably know what treatment(s) you want. Have a great summer; we hope to see you again. Best regards, Russ Abell, GM

Stayed here only one night in July 2014...passing through to Washington. Beautiful location, nice rooms, super comfy beds, excellent service. Highly recommend. There is also a spa which looked lovely but I didn't use. Located right on the Williamette River. My only negative would be to not spend the extra money for a room "overlooking river"... while our room was overlooking river I had assumed that would actually mean seeing the river. The trees are so tall you can't see the river but you know it's there by the sound of the water and the sound of boats going by... all in all an excellent spot with excellent service.

Dear Songfromtheheart: Thank you for the nice comments regarding your recent stay with us. The river bank and pathway running next to the hotel is a protected area and the view to the river less than 30 yards away is dotted with trees but we are glad that you enjoyed the setting. Thank you for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to Portland. Best regards, Russ Abell, GM

The area is nice. It is close to many downtown sites. The beds are HORRIBLE. I never have back issues and I woke each day with terrible low back pain (a good reason to seek the spa/massage services.) Valet service is NOT optional as stated unless you want to park and walk a mile or park illegally. The information on the site leads you to believe that you have a choice. NO, you don't unless you don't have an auto. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Not all rooms have balconies...mine (4th floor) had a pleasant view of the aircondtioning units and business buildings/parking lot. Noisy. The hotel itself was nice, and seemed updated. The bathroom was large and well lit. The room itself was clean but something was not quite right witht he A/C unit...the sheets and air seemed VERY humid and damp. Apparently there is complimentary fruit - never saw it. The coffee provided in the rooms is good. I am well traveled and have stayed in hostels that are more pleasureable than this hotel. This should be rated more or less like a motel & never as 4 star Spa. So disappointed. On a positive note. There are bikes available in the lobby. That is a nice touch.

Room Tip: Ask for riverside to avoid noise from huge AC units on street side. Ask for balcony room. Make sure...

Dear Trave1411: My apologies for not meeting your expectations on your recent visit. Unfortunately the parking areas are not owned by the hotel so that valet parking is required similar to a downtown hotel with parking lot, we have attempted to keep the rate as low as possible and way below downtown. We do provide shuttle service and are two blocks from the Portland Streetcar station for those guests without vehicles. Thank you for staying with us and thank you for sharing your comments regarding the hotel. Best regards, Russ Abell, GM

We were in Portland for a wedding and my wife had been sent a travelzoo promotion the day before we left for the River's Edge, just south of downtown along the river. We canceled our other hotel reservation to take a chance - and it was a great choice! River's Edge has valet parking (our promotion had in included in the cost) and were warmly greeted upon our arrival. The staff at the front desk were very attentive and helpful throughout our stay (two nights). The rooms were large and well appointed. A prior review noted the old cathode ray televisions, but it should be noted that they were installed flat screens in all rooms while we were there. Baths were large - with a separate shower and a large soaking bathtub. There also is a balcony, which on the warm days we were there was wonderful for sitting outside and reading (complimentary newspapers available in the lobby - The Oregonian and USA Today).

The hotel has a spa connected to it and guests can use the sauna, jacuzzi and steam rooms - however as they have a clothing optional policy (very nice), there were separate facilities for men and women. (Might make it more attractive for same sex couples, although didn't note any using the facilities while we were there...)

There also is a large area with lots of exercise equipment and even a small dance/yoga studio. there are a few classes offered , but our wedding activities precluded our attending.

While there is no food service in the building, there is a connection with the restaurant next door - Aquariva. The package we purchased included a continental breakfast, listed for $8 on the menu. We took the $8 as credit towards other items, and I must say that the bagel with cream cheese, capers, pickled onion and especially the house cured lox was amazing. I grew up in NY and the lox is perhaps the best I've ever had. Texture was buttery, and it tasted great. We chose the same option the second morning as well. Also had lunch there one time - I had a burger that was exactly as I ordered (I always ask for meat to be cooked as rare as they will let it out of the kitchen). Wonderful flavors, and the fries were fantastic. By the way, we had our meals outdoors on the deck overlooking the river. Very idyllic.

Should also mention that the hotel provides complimentary rental of bicycles and there is a river trail just outside the hotel, so easy riding to downtown.

We were very pampered, and the price was less than we would have paid at the Marriott Residence Inn near the Pearl District. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: We stayed on the river side and was worth it as we had time to sit on the balcony and relax. If you...

Hi SandyVoit: thank you for completing a review regarding your recent stay with us and we appreciate your “touching all the bases” on the amenities and restaurant offerings. Thought I had booked River Place Hotel in Portland, but got there and no reservation. Rivers Edge in not as central as River Place, but they offer a shuttle to downtown, and the trolley runs right by it. The staff was what made the stay a delight. Very caring and funny and friendly young people. The river trail was right out our window and the river beyond, even though hard to see through all the trees. The restaurant and bar next door was lovely and once again great staff! It is always nice when something "unplanned" turns out better than you would expect!

Bed was comfy and towels were cushy! Real coffee cups, so I say this was a good deal for the money!

Room Tip: Choose river side. We were on the first floor, but I would suggest higher.
