Inn at Northrup Station
Ranked #10 of 144 Hotels in Portland
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 15 October 2013

Our second stay at the Inn at Northrup Station which is nicely located in Northwest Portland. A comfortable and pleasant stay with, Wi-Fi, streetcar passes and breakfast included which is useful. We wish that they would be as hip and trendsetting about their eco-performance as they are about their design.

Public Transport:
+ Good location for accessing the streetcar and kudos for providing complimentary streetcar passes
+ Kudos for providing directions from the airport to the hotel by public transport
- Missed opportunity to provide more information for accessing the full public transportation network and for getting to / from the hotel from other key loations by public transport (eg. to/from the Amtrak and Bus stations) and highlighting the availability of lots of Zipcars nearby to the hotel

Zero Waste:
+ Recycling bin in the room (but had to go searching for it) but no composting bins
+ Was provided the option to receive bill via email rather than getting another piece of paper to throw away
- TONS of disposable items at the breakfast - plates, cups, bowls, cutlery - this is extra disappointing given that every room as dishes and cutlery and dishwashers. With a little bit or organisation and effort all this waste could be a thing of the past and would make the breakfast much more pleasant
- No recycling or composting bins apparent at breakfast
- Disposable plastic toiletries containers rather than the bulk dispensers you find in many eco-conscious Nordic hotels (does participate in program to donate excess used toiletries)
- Single-use coffee cartridge coffee maker in room but not facility to recycle / compost the single-use coffee cartridges

Energy:
- When we entered the room all the lights were on as was the air conditioner! All using lots of electricity unnecessarily. Either install room-key operated electricity controls like in most European hotels or housekeeping staff should be instructed to turn off all electrical items between guests
- No sensors to turn-off or dim lights in common hallways when not needed
- No apparent on-site generation through solar or thermal hot water

Recycled and Local Products:
+ What looked like recycled paper products in the room
- Missed opportunity of using more local products at breakfast (eg. local jams and spreads rather than generic single use containers) which would make breakfast more pleasant

Environmental Information:
- No information in room or on website regarding environmental, initiatives, performance / CO2 emissions and targets
- Not listed in Tripadvisor's Green Leaders

CO2 Offset
- No option to offset CO2 emissions from stay

I have been staying at the Inn for the past six years, sadly this weekend is the last time my husband and I will be staying there. The location and the funky decor is great and the beds are very comfortable. We love the neighborhood. Over the years the hotel has become somewhat lack lustre in its upkeep and could do with a refresh. The breakfast is cheap, thoughtless and lacking in anything fresh. When the hotel is full they cannot accommodate guests for breakfast in the tiny space allocated for it and run out of everything so you may as well plan on not having breakfast. We skipped it completely the last visit and went up the street to a bagel shop. However, the biggest issue is the staff. They are completely unhelpful and have no concept of customer service from reception to housekeeping...be sure to put the do not disturb sign on your door as this seems to be their only system for organizing the room cleaning schedule. I am sad and disappointed.

Wonderful place set in a residential area in Portland. Trolley is in front of the hotel, they give you two free tickets, but we decided to "hoof" it to downtown, a short 13 blocks. Easy walk, took in Powell bookstore along the way and onward to the center of town. Went over to the river and took in a wonderful market along the river and got a great lead on a place to eat. Caught the trolley on the way back to the hotel and took in the local area stores located a couple of blocks away from the hotel. Evening we were directed by the hotel staff to a short walk of three blocks through residential areas to several blocks of choices of dining.

Room was very roomy and comfortable, we choose the top floor and towards the back that overlooked a private residence. Very nice!!!! Breakfast was good.

Very friendly staff and helpful. I would recommend this place to stay and not the normal chain hotels that are located downtown.

Good luck and enjoy!

Room Tip: Back is quiet and not on the trolley line.

Thank you for sharing your recent stay on TripAdvisor. Some people find it hard to believe we really are only a 20-30 min walk to downtown! It’s a simple walk with plenty of great shops and restaurants to explore on the way. Thank you so much for keeping us in mind for your next trip to Portland and we look forward to your next stay!

Glad we found this place!

Great location - walkable to downtown (if you'd like), or just hop onto the streetcar outside the door. Good restaurant district within steps of the hotel - safe walking, good food.

Kudos for re-inventing the usual hotel experience!

It was never a question for us...we wanted to be near downtown Portland but NOT 'in' downtown! When The Inn at Northrup Station appeared with so many positive reviews, I had to book our 2 night stay with them. Once we arrived, we were struck by the hip and cool look of the building, the fantastic, vibrant colors of the interior, the beautiful king-size bed and ample amount of room in our suite. The front-desk staff were so helpful with suggestions for dining, shopping, directions, and don't forget the complimentary streetcar tickets. The complimentary breakfast was full of 'the usual' offerings, but, certainly ample. There was even a Keurig coffeemaker in the room..what a nice surprise! Now, not everything could be perfect, so only one minor comment re: the bathroom...it was handicap accessible, which is a huge positive, but we were not in need of the shower seat/bench, so that kind of got in the way...believe me, we worked around it! Also, since the shower was handicap-accessible, the water got EVERYWHERE!! (Thank goodness they supplied plenty of towels..took care of that minor problem without difficulty!) We would stay again without question!

Hello!

You have really nailed down our location perfectly! We have the luxury of being so close to downtown, but don’t have to worry about downtown congestion. Within our neighborhood, Nob Hill, there are several of great attractions and restaurants all within a 10-15 minute walk, but if you want to head downtown it’s just a quick Streetcar ride away!

Thank you for your great review and we will see you next time!

I and a friend stayed overnight after coming to Portland for a wedding. From the outrageous wallpaper and carpeting to the serve yourself waffles, OG coffee, yogurts, cereals, juices, etc. at the convenience bar, we had a wonderful stay right in downtown. The rooms were oversized, with nice beds, TV, couch, mini kitchen, nice sized bath. Everything was bright, clean, with fun colors and patterns mixed and mingled everywhere in the building. I would definitely stay again!

Room Tip: We had no trouble with road rouse, stayed on the parking lot side.

The Inn at Northrup Station is my favorite place to stay in Portland. The suites are beautifully appointed with well equipped kitchenettes including fridge/freezer with ice maker, dishwasher, dishes and cutlery, two flat screen TV's, neat office area, comfy sofa, reading chair and ottoman, and the most comfortable bed ever!! The staff is so helpful, and the breakfast has something for everyone--fresh juices, waffles, bagels yogurt, cereal, toast, eggs--everything one could want. The Inn provides free streetcar tickets, and the Portland Streetcar system is amazing--it will take you almost anywhere you might want to go in Portland--Jamison Square, Portland Art Museum, Powell's Bookstore, Whole Foods--you name it!

Room Tip: There is no pool or fitness center, but Portland is a fabulous city to "Walk" to get one...

What more can we say than thank you for this wonderful review! We do our best to have a variety of items available for our guests during breakfast. From our daily order of fresh bagels to our delicious coffee blend (both of which are sourced locally), we aim to have something for everybody! We are also happy to hear you took advantage of our complimentary streetcar passes to explore the city. Being so close to the streetcar stop, our guests are literally just a few stops away from many major destinations.

Thank you again for this exceptional review and we look forward to your next stay with us!
