While we have eaten in the Heathman in the past and have always be very pleased, this time we stopped for dessert after the theater. My wife had a Trio of Pot de Creme with three types. It was outstanding! I had the Chocolate Gourmandise which is a flowerless chocolate cake. It was extremely intense and outrageously good. This is a great restaurant!

We stayed here for a week and ate all three meals in the resturant. We entertain guests for dinner several evenings. The food is fresh, delicious and beautifully prepared. They are willing to let you share large portions and the service is superb. The Chef is incredible with his creations and very accommodating to meet any dietary requests. This is not your ordinary hotel resturant. We gladly give it 5 stars!

While visiting our son and daughter-in-law in Portland, we selected this restaurant because its cuisine was described as both French and Northwestern in a local restaurant guide, thus settling a discssion about whether to have French or Northwestern; '''and' is better" to quote a current commercial. We arrived on time and were met by two unsmiling 'greeters' who both promptly disappeared. When one returned we were told to follow her but then, without explanation, we were told to wait in the middle of the restaurant. To be fair, this was to allow the staff to prepare another table which would give us more than six inches to spare on either side of our neighbors. However, it was so rushed that we had no side plates and no salt and pepper.
The restaurant makes a big deal of its wine list and associated awards. The list is indeed impressive in size. I selected a reasonably priced bottle of Cahors. A few minutes later I saw someone walking towards the table with the winelist in hand; never a good sign. Rather than just coming out with the usual 'sorry, we are out of your choice', she said that had been a run on that particulr bottle that evening. Given the size of the list, I find that very difficult to believe. Rather than ask me for a second choice (or offer me a similar, but more expensive, wine at the original price, as has happened elsewhere) she recommended a similarly priced Bordeaux. When it arrived, the first pour was full of dregs but tasted fine so we had it strained and decanted at our request. When the bill arrived, I was charged for a completely different bottle of wine, more than twice the price of either; be sure to check your bill. I wonder how much checking the Wine Spectator and others do of restaurants with wine lists the size of telephone directories to see how much is really in stock.
The food itself, although tasty, was neither particularly French nor Northwestern. The '20th century pear' salad had very little pear, the salmon fillet was likewise very small. The lamb bolognese had a lot of pasta but only a modest amount of meat. And throughout the service was robotic.
It was by far the most expensive meal we had during our four day visit and by far the least enjoyable.

Try the smoked salmon hash! Lots of flavor, nicely prepared and beautifully served. We also like their eggs Benedict! That's our usual pick.

The bar at the Heathman provides good service and a nice selection of specialty beverages on the bar menu. You can order a drink either in the bar or the salon and enjoy your cocktail while warming up next to the beautiful fireplace. A really nice way to end your evening if you are staying at the hotel or nearby.
