Description: While Chez Machin's food is based on the local and rural cuisine of France, it has grown and changed with the times and culture of the Hawthorne neighborhood. Chef Seth Neeser took over the kitchen in 2008. Since that time he has continued to improve and update the menu to keep up with the times. Keeping things fresh, current, local, and delicious is on the top of our priority list.

“Savory Crepes for the win!”

So, go to Chez Machin with a friend, one of you orders a savory crepe, the other a sweet dessert crepe, then share with each other. Can't go wrong, I promise.

“Pleasant, intimate Front Room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 September 2012

We had traveled to Hawthorne Blvd in the south east area of Portland as one of the attractions visitors should see. After walking from 30th to around 47th Avenue and making some minor purchases here and there, we turned back and eventually felt a little peckish. Having earlier looked at the posted menu for Chez Machin (between 35th and 36th Avenue), we decided to have lunch there. A good choice as it turned out. They have a good onion soup and some excellent sandwiches. One of us had the one with cheeses and the other went for a turkey sandwich—all nicely grilled and with salad as well. The room at the front is intimate and pleasant. If we lived in Portland, we would definitely go there again.

“Maybe it was an off-day, but very disappointing and not very French!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2012

Slow and indifferent service was only outdone by the poor quality of the crepe. Maybe they were having an off-day because what I experienced did not come close to what is being said by some of the other reviewers. That is why I am giving it a poor instead of lower rating.

The crepe was absolutely tasteless. I mean, it had no taste. Even the smoked salmon had no taste.

The crepe itself was bordering on burnt. The other fillings were skimpy and, yes, tasteless. Even the dribble of sauce was tasteless, as well as lukewarm.

In almost 45 years of eating crepes, this was a unique experience for me.

The server meant well, but was less than effective.

The prices would be reasonable if the crepes were even of average quality. But the one I was served was way overpriced.

As for the Parisian atmosphere, it just wasn't like anything I have every experienced in France.

“Tres Yum”

Very quaint French place in funky SE Hawthorne. Atmosphere reminded me of Paris. Seafood crepe was very good. Service was wonderful.

“Magnifique!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2012

This adorable little creperie is in the heart of the Hawthorne district. I've been here several times for brunch and lunch crepes. They have a mix of savory and sweet offerings, plus salads and soup. They serve beer and wine - but try the local hard cider for a real French treat. The menu has a lot of options for vegetarians and meat eaters. There is limited seating in the front and more in the back (don't be put off if the front is full). I prefer to sit out front and people watch. Last trip, I had a savory crepe, salad, and cider for $20 (not including tip). Waitstaff has always been helpful and quick.
