Old Town is just that "Old Town", there are a lot if cool vendors and such and a beautiful waterfront along the Willamette River pronounced "Will-am-it" but you have to keep in mind the copious homeless and drug dealers. The dealers are blatant most don't speak English, you'll know them because they walk right up to you and snap the little baggies in their hand. All that aside I recommend you go there at least once but do not walk around with your cellphone exposed, it will be snatched away.

I am a little surprised at the reviews of Old Tow. Perhaps we went there with family and also we had the fun of the Saturday Market. Yes, there are homeless people here & there, but sadly that is in every city, surely? They certainly caused us no trouble.
The Saturday market was really super- lots of stalls nd unlike many markets, lots of true crafts. There was a stall with lovely furniture made from recycled woods; a stall with unique Portland t-shirts; another with whacky playing cards including the breweries of Portland, landmarks and also of many other cities- fun gift to bring home. We bought some film strip novelty items, made from actual film clips. There were street food stands, very popular, and a music stand where music is played in the summer months. Lots of photo ops and families having fun. I suppose keeping Portland weird does have its good side, but seeing the reviews, perhaps not to everyone's taste. If near the market, Voodoo Donuts is a landmark, with queues around the corner-fun place where a designer donut can be purchased as a treat or gift.

This place is disgusting. In China Town there is Human feces in the doorways and transients all over. Would skip this part of Portland. Too close to the missions to be a tourist attraction. Unfortunately, Voodoo Donuts and the Saturday Market are in the heart of this mess. Children felt uneasy and nervous with all the filth and hobos.

On a freezing cold day we had a 2 hour + walk around Portland. Main impressions is that it's a nice little town. Sure it has it's urban decay area and the homeless/itinerants hanging around like most major cities, but it was sad to see the amount of closed business's on our walk. But there are some great buildings, signage and sites to make it worthwhile. Also a few sleazy areas that we motored through but never felt threatened. I like Portland and hope to spend more time there.

I was under the impression that there are lots of nice old buildings, shops and restaurants in this area and therefore I specially took time to go there. I was disappointed. Although there are a few old building, the area is mostly empty and sketchy. Some parts smell bad and are worn out.
I totally see potential in this area. If they can renovate the buildings, and rehabilitate the home less people in the area, it can get the attention of tourists.
