“Unique and affordable”

Mission Theater & Pub
Reviewed 15 July 2014

I absolutely love how they have taken an old play house and turned it into a theater! I also LOVE the fact that you can enjoy some snacks and beer during the movie!! AND it's all so affordable!! My only complaint is I was anticipating a little more variety in their substantial food besides pizza and Caesar salad. But in its defense their portions were very generous and delicious!

This was the coolest movie theater I have ever visited. Staff said they just opened and remodeled. You will find a unique movie theater experience at the Mission Theater & Pub. We visited the theater twice and sat in the balcony level both times. Although there are other unique sitting opportunities that you will never find in other movie theaters.

The seats were in great condition with ample room for your legs. I loved being able to have a drink and eat on the ledges as well.

The movie screen was large, sound was great, lighting was great.

This is real gem of a place that offers a unique and quality facilities and a great value.

The McMenamins have a well-deserved reputation as preservationists, repurposing old buildings for the enjoyment of others. Here, here! But many of their properties, including the Mission Theater, have equally deserved reputations for poor service and mediocre food. The McM's seem to get a pass for this, either because of their preservation work or because of the McM mystique of funky Portlandianess. I say "Enough already!" There is no excuse or justification to stand in line for 50 minutes -- FIFTY minutes -- to get a pint of their middling beer. A line of 40 people being served by two gigling, overwhelmed servers and 1.5 cash registers isn't cute or forgivable, it's absurd. Would you stand in line for 50 minutes for one beer anywhere else -- and be told that any food order will take 90 minutes to fill? Your community projects are laudable, McM ... but isn't your bottom-line business food service and customer service? Please start focusing on that -- and start by adequately staffing the Mission!

The movies are low cost and are generally second run, but it's a nice venue with a balcony and great beer. The food is a miss and they have no fryer, so McMenamins famous tots aren't available.

Mission Theater has more than movies. On a recent visit to Portland we enjoyed an adaptation the Debussy opera "Pelleas and Melisande" done by the Oregon Theater Opera company. It was an innovative performance with singing interspersed with clips from the film "Last Year at Marienbad". You don't often get the opportunity to have a nice bottle of Edgefield pinot noir while watching an opera.
