Once you know your way around this labyrinth it makes for a great walk to visit each rose garden and end in the middle at Palio's.

In the past, I've only been filled with confusion and mild rage when trying to navigate through this place. When turning onto one of it's diagonal streets with the thrill of a new-found short cut, only to be shunted around a labrynth of roundabouts, Ladd's Addition is not cool. *However*, when on a guided tour with my architectural history class, this place is incredible.

Began as farmland, then fully built up between 1900ish and 1930ish, the buildings are a refreshing mix of sturdy, well manicured, well maintained construction. Go with someone who knows something about architecture (you have that friend, right?) or read up on it. Or just stare and pretend you can afford to live in a neighborhood this incredible.

If your in Portland make sure to go to the International Rose Test Garden after that if you still want more roses go to Ladd's Addition. It's very peaceful and not overcrowded or as visited. We stumbled across the west garden of Ladd's Addition during a bike ride exploring the city. It was mid-summer and the roses were in full bloom. It was spectacular! Well cared for, beautiful and fragrant roses in a diverse neighborhood. Little did we know the west garden was one of four gardens and we left before seeing the other three! After doing some research we discovered there were four gardens and Ladd's circle. We went back to see the complete Ladd's Addition and weren't disappointed. Ladd's Addition is a beautiful part of the Rose City. It is named after once upon a time mayor of Portland William Sargent Ladd. The garden is designed like a compass with four gardens at the cardinal directions and a center piece. If you stand in the center you can see all four gardens.

Ladd's Addition is not your usual neighborhood. It's streets don't cross at right angles which means a lot less through traffic. In the middle of the main intersections there are roundabouts filled with plants and flowering ones in season. There are all kinds of good restaurants and shops along the two main boundaries, SE Hawthorne and SE Division. It is a lovely area for quiet walking and you can easily get lost for a short time while never being more than a few blocks from the main streets. What fun!

One of my favorite neighborhoods in Portland. I love the park-like roundabouts and beautiful architecture of most of the houses. There is a cafe and a few other businesses tucked in where you wouldn't expect and it is bordered by two great neighborhoods, Hawthorne and Division if you want to keep exploring or grab some lunch.
