“A few wrinkles to smooth out, but overall, nice stay”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

Previous reviews seem to sum this place up pretty well...so I'll be brief.

Fantastic location. Extremely new, and therefore clean, property. As it is a Residence Inn, rooms are very large compared to a typical urban downtown hotel. Having a small kitchen in the room is fantastic, as in our case, we have a toddler...so it was very helpful.

Check in was pretty smooth. Friendly front desk.

Only one glitch during our stay, which was more concerning about what "could have happened", than what actually happened, and it deals with Housekeeping. While there for our three nights, we opted not to have our room serviced. Any needed new towells, coffee, etc, we just ordered from the front desk, after returning from a day's outing.

On one of the returns to the hotel room, we noticed someone had clearly been in the room, even though we had clearly left the "do not come in our room" sign hanging on the door knob. Was our Ipad, Laptop, or any other item of value stolen? No. But the simple fact that someone entered, when we specifically requested "do not disturb", was concerning at the very least.

In addition, the fact that it happened can't really be explained by saying "our worker must not have understood your request". I mean, hanging a sign like that on the door knob eliminates any potential language barriers of whomever may be in housekeeping. In other words, a do not disturb sign means the same thing in any language, regardless of their native tongue. So, there was really no excuse to be given.

Talked to the front desk. They quickly checked, confirmed it happened, apologized, and offered a rate reduction for our stay as a gesture of the apology. This was appreciated, especially since I hadn't asked for it. During check out, however, the front desk person didn't honor this (different desk person). Instead, she said that he must offered the discount for just one night, not the stay. Oh well, I wasn't about to bicker and be THAT guy....so I just left. But it would have been nice if the original offer was upheld.

Final comments....Breakfast...it was OK. Hot and cold items, nothing gourmet, but many choices. As others have written, the lines can be LONG. In fact, we skipped breakfast 2 of the days for that reason. Go early if this is important to your stay.

Lastly...a parking tip, if you're looking to save money there....there is a Secured Parking garage across the street from the hotel. Literally, right across the street (nearest the train station/river-side corner). $4 a day weekend, $8 weekday, much better than $32 valet plus tip. When it's not this convenient, I always go valet. But when parking is 20 feet from the hotel, different story.

Room Tip: Courtyard facing rooms likely the most quiet.

As with all Residence Inn by Marriott properties, the room has a kitchen that includes a sink, coffee maker, full-size refrigerator, bar-type dining area, pots, pans, dishes, and silverware for your use. There's a small living room with a flat-screen TV, and, in our case, a king size bed. The bathroom was a good size. It had a large shower, toilet, sink, and toiletries. You will find an iron and ironing board in the closet. There is plenty of storage space. The only thing the room lacks is an in-room safe (you can leave your valuables in the hotel's safe). On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, there's the Manager's Reception where you can make a whole meal of the munchies and hot hors d'oeuvres offered. The location of this Residence Inn (there's another one near the waterfront) was perfect for us because we could easily walk to the nearest streetcar stop and ride to wherever we want. There were also places to eat nearby, including a Safeway grocery store. We would definitely stay here again if our travel plans included Portland.

I've spent a night there with my friends. We booked 2 beds + sofa bed room. Room was really nice and looked like it was renovated recently. Our stay included breakfast, which was pretty good.

Hotel is located in 15 minute walk from the heart of Downtown. If you are lazy to walk, cab is just about $5.

This brand new hotel is in the very hip and desirable Pearl District. The room is a standard size room with couch plus a small kitchenette. Modern and tasteful accommodations. Nice staff and much more upscale than the average Residence Inn....What you would expect from a downtown hotel location. The best part was the rail access to the convention center across the river and the plethora of both affordable and upscale dining options. My new favorite for under $200 a night.

Great brand new hotel in the Pearl District within walking distance to the water, restaurants, grocery stores and shopping. The neighborhood is trendy and in a revitalized area of town with a great mixture of new glass condo buildings and beautiful old converted brick warehouses and is adjacent to the downtown core. Though we had our own car public transit looked readily available as there were many street cars nearby. The hotel has valet parking for $32/day which was kind of steep but there was plenty of metered street parking just outside the hotel and the meters are free after 7pm (until 8am the next morning) which is a good cheap/free alternative. We didn't have any trouble finding street parking at all during our 5 day stay.

The hotel itself had a gym with several pieces of cardio equipment and free weights. There was also a swimming pool which was a nice bonus. There was a breakfast buffet in the lobby of the hotel every morning which served your usual breakfast fare of sausage, french toast, scrambled eggs, waffles, toast, oatmeal, cereal etc...Weekdays were not very busy and guests could easily find a table and leisurely eat but the weekend that we were there it was crowded and there were lineups out the door to get food. Go down for breakfast early on a weekend as I think most people sleep-in and all arrive at the same time.

The rooms were modern and spacious and each suite had it's own kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, sink and dishwasher. Handy if you don't want to eat every meal out at a restaurant. The bed was comfy and the shower was big. Our room overlooked the courtyard where there was patio furniture, a fire pit and a water features. We will definitely be back if we are in Portland again. This hotel met and exceeded our expectations.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 6th floor (top floor) overlooking the courtyard and it was quiet.

The hotel is located in a new area called the Pearl District which is peaceful and tranquil. The place is 5-month new and as one can expect, it needs time to smooth out their flaws. The checkin was alright though the lady in the front counter wasn't too welcoming, maybe she was busy and was being interrupted. As we got to our room, one of their cleaning staff was just about closing the room door. The cleaning for the 1st and 2nd day was alright, nothing one can rave about, your standard cleaning. The 3rd day was horrible, the bathroom sink has coils of hair flowing in the shower area and while showering, the drainage in the shower did not work so the water was flooding the little sink. Bath towels were literally strewn on the bathroom rack. That certainly is not a Marriott standard!

I have always like the Marriott but this stay has certainly changed my view.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 5th floor with a view of the train track and a little river.

As a frequent visitor to Portland we have checked out a number of hotels and for the past few years have stayed downtown. We were not able to get into out usual spot so we gave the Residence Inn Pearl District a shot and were happily surprised. Thought a bit off the downtown Max lines which like since the in-laws don't drive this is very close still to both the Max and the streetcar trolleys. Its within walking distance to many of the great restaurants and shopping and if you want downtown is a 12-15 min walk.

The hotel itself is brand new and very well appointed. We has a studio suite which was very roomy. The breakfast buffet, and happy hour were included and if you like you can sit outside in the atrium. Staff was great, and the rates were very reasonable.

I would certainly consider this for our next trip to Portland.
