“Simple, good location, not as good as Seattle's Ace”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2011

First off this hotel is in a great location, on Stark right downtown Portland. A couple blocks away from Powell Books, max station, and tons of good restaurants and bars. The Ace hotel has a real modern, minimalist feel to it. My girlfriend and I shared the shared standard room which means no bathroom. You gotta share a bathroom and shower that is down the hall, no big deal for us. But for $100 a night we couldn't complain. Seriously, good luck finding a better price downtown portland. You could end up paying a bit more for the rooms that have a bathroom. The breakfast in the morning was the thing that kinda chapped my anus. We walk in and the guy (friendly enough) tells us that breakfast is $8 a pop. It was sort of a pretentious spread: artisanal cheeses and meats, some crazy fish dish, and jams with bread. Seriously? In Seattle we got free waffles and cereal with coffee that was way better and FREE. It was pretty good, but they should advertise the price. They lead you believe it is a free breakfast. What are you supposed to do? Walk away after the guy tells you to pay up. Very tricky Ace Hotel....very tricky indeed. Long story short, decent stay but Seattle does it better. It was a nice trip but, it just drives the point home for me: Portland is a great city full of pretentious hipsters. Throw away that cuban hat and shave that ridiculous moustache!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view, we were stuck staring at a wall

The location of The Ace is fantastic - we could see Powell's bookstore from our window (only 1 street over) and the amazing free transportation that Portland offers is right down the street. We splurged and stayed in one of the larger rooms with a huge sectional sofa. Our only major complaint was regarding the pillows. Truly the strangest pillows I have ever slept on - but not necessarily the worst. The other 3 in our party agreed - they were like pillowcases stuffed with hundreds of small rectangular pieces of roam rubber. For the amount of money spent per night on this room, we for sure didn't expect that. We'd definitely stay here again next time we're in town - but we're bringing our own pillows!

The Ace Hotel is quintessentially Portland. Lots of hipsters lounging in the main lobby, and film crews coming and going. We had a great stay, and the combination of the Stumptown Coffee onsite for morning coffee, and Beaker & Flask for evening cocktails made it all the more enjoyable. The showers are a bit tempermental - it takes a lot of fiddling to get the right combination of heat and pressure. But the rooms were sizeable and the location - a block away from the main Powell's bookstore - was impossible to beat.

Stayed here for one night. Booked a "deluxe" room which I thought was a junior suite. Bill for one night with tax was $220. Dark and old lobby. Elevator walls were covered with plywood. Third floor "deluxe" room had shower in the middle of the small room, a bed on the floor which matress killed my back, one frayed chair, no dresser for clothes, most cramped and small closet you could imagine, magic marker type writing on the walls which I think they called art and and an old record player with a selection of used records. Prior to this "room" winning the worst room prize, the worst hotel room was in an Econo in a small town in upstate NY which had only one motel in the town and the swimming pool was filed with dirt. In summary, I have two words that would fit the Ace Hotel: "wrecking ball."

The ace is an unusual hotel is a good location near the center of portland. We found most destinations were easly reachale by foot or tram. Rooms were clean and well sized, we had the midrange, and the vinyl LP player was fun. The sink may be outside the bath, hard to get used to. Not well suited for business travelers, but if you're looking for something different to add to your portland experience, this is a great bet.

We stayed here for two nights at the beginning of August and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The hotel was very trendy and buzzing with activity. It had a young and energetic feel to it. Free internet on the mac was useful and the food in the bar was nice.
We stayed in a 'single', which can easily accommodate two. At first we were unsure about sharing bathrooms and showers but they were so clean. They were regularly checked and there were always towels for showering.
The laundry was very good value - $10 per bag! The only issue was parking - it was full when we arrived and when we asked for the price, it turned out to be more expensive than the car park around the corner!
We would definitely stay here again.

We'd heard about this place from seriously hip friends, and it did not disappoint; it's an old industrial era building revamped into a hotel but in a very self-consciously cool, pre-war pulp fiction style. The kids stayed in a double and my spouse and I had a Junior Suite, which actually comes with its own working turntable and records --real LPs! in eternal black vinyl!-- so how cool is that? The wall featured an immense mural of an illustration culled from a 16th century text. Also, the shower was right there in the room, cordoned off by a heavy curtain; it seemed nuts but it worked out very well. The bed was comfy, and the ambience amazingly quiet considering even the lobby features constant rock 'n' roll music. The adjacent restaurant was a little chic and adventurous for my kids' taste, though the rock 'n' roll music was even louder and this appealed to them very much; the racket excepted, my own meal was very well prepared. Next door there is a slightly expensive but good quality deli for breakfast or lunch. The hotel is an easy walk from the train station and but a block or two from Powell's City Of Books and VooDoo Donuts, so the location can hardly be improved.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a record player in it!
