First off this hotel is in a great location, on Stark right downtown Portland. A couple blocks away from Powell Books, max station, and tons of good restaurants and bars. The Ace hotel has a real modern, minimalist feel to it. My girlfriend and I shared the shared standard room which means no bathroom. You gotta share a bathroom and shower that is down the hall, no big deal for us. But for $100 a night we couldn't complain. Seriously, good luck finding a better price downtown portland. You could end up paying a bit more for the rooms that have a bathroom. The breakfast in the morning was the thing that kinda chapped my anus. We walk in and the guy (friendly enough) tells us that breakfast is $8 a pop. It was sort of a pretentious spread: artisanal cheeses and meats, some crazy fish dish, and jams with bread. Seriously? In Seattle we got free waffles and cereal with coffee that was way better and FREE. It was pretty good, but they should advertise the price. They lead you believe it is a free breakfast. What are you supposed to do? Walk away after the guy tells you to pay up. Very tricky Ace Hotel....very tricky indeed. Long story short, decent stay but Seattle does it better. It was a nice trip but, it just drives the point home for me: Portland is a great city full of pretentious hipsters. Throw away that cuban hat and shave that ridiculous moustache!
