“Real Portland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2014

This is a hippster place for sure and it feels like Portland..indie, quirky, hip, resourceful. innovative, and green (in the enviromentaly conscious sense). You feel this from the moment you walk into the lobby and it is reflected throughout the rooms, elevator, and restaurant. The rooms are really cool (9 types to choose from) and indie hip with odd but whimsical "murals" on the walls, mid century and retro (or other period) furniture, low beds, clawfoot tubs, books, recycled and refurbished lamps, shelves, tables, chairs etc...some rooms have record players and hardwood floors..most have mini bars stocked with locally procured items. Some rooms are more quiet than others (street facing can be noisy) and you can choose this at booking.

The location of the hotel is perfect.. right at the juncture of downtown, the pearl district, and northwest district. There are dozens of restaurants, bars, food carts, and shops within a few block radius of the hotel including Powell's Books which is a block down. Parking for the hotel is done on the street or at a parking lot nearby and there is very easy access to the 405 expressway.

We did not eat at the hotel's restaurant Clyde Common (wish we would have) as we arrived to late but it is very popular and one of the best in Portland and beneath Clyde is the Pepe Le Moko zinc bar...super cool!. We did however eat breakfast at the attached deli Kenny and Zukes. I had the Breakfast Dog with eggs, bacon and cheddar, and hash...really, really good!
There is also a Stumptown Coffee attached to the hotel and lots of food carts nearby.

We also stayed at The Nines hotel downtown for 3 nights on arrival in Portland and though it is a great hotel in it's own way ...very sleek, modern, and sterile. The Ace is real Portland earthy, retro, and urban hip. If I am completely honest with myself I prefer The Ace in all it's cool vibe quirkiness and I really look forward to staying here again.

Room Tip: All rooms are really cool, some more quiet than others which you can choose at booking. Street views...

Lovely staff, very warm service. Really like the deco from lobby to room.... no the usual kind of a standard hotel. Very comfy and cannot ask for more. First time stayed in a shared room, meaning bathroom and toilet facilities is shared; not too bad at least its neat and tidy! I don't mind to stay here again!

Room Tip: Don't go for a shared room type if you are psychologically prepared...

We had a great stay at the Ace Portland - the Staff couldn't have been more kind and accommodating. We alerted the hotel in advance that our weekend was our daughter's graduation, and they were so prepared! A kind note in our room from the staff was a first rate touch. We will be back! Thank you again, Ace!

Chuck

At first I thought I was arriving to a hostel... I couldn't have been more wrong. The boys at the front desk all awesome. The front door..l well everyone has been a big help. It is very moderately priced for what it is. And it is off the charts in cool, but not fussy factor.

I stayed in the big-corner room which was comfortable and in the cones of silence compared to my first room on my first stay (on the second floor). I went for the private en suite room as well. Sharing a shower room is not my thing. To cap it off each morning is a hedonistic coffee place, Stumptown Coffee,

Who knew? Not only was the city of Portland far more than we thought it would be, so too is the Ace Hotel. Cool, slick, retro etc... all the things you see in other reviews. The surprise was the outstanding food in the restaurant, the incredible deli in the building and the bar. The staff were helpful, energetic and a delight. The rooms are retro, so that means comfortable but quirky so be ready for that. Portland is in the grips of renovation with numerous innovative businesses popping up, some of the best coffee in the world (never thought I would say that about a USA city), a food culture that stacks up against anything else in the world.... but wait .... a whiskey culture. No visit is complete without a drink at the Whiskey Library.. won't say anymore, just go see.

Room Tip: Make sure you specify a room with its own bathroom.

We stayed at the Ace for a couple of nights in June. The hotel is stylishly (trendily) decorated but agree with previous reviewers that it is a lot of style over substance. Our room was on the small side, but was quiet as we were on the back of the hotel. The door staff were great as we came and went, helping with our stroller, but the guy who checked us in at reception seemed to be having a bad day, and was particularly unhelpful with parking as he informed us the hotel lot was full so we should just park in the street (and quickly before roads shut ahead of the Rose Parade). Not really the help we were looking for when arriving in a new city for the first time.

For the price we paid I imagine there are better hotels in the area.

Have visited Portland a number of times and thought this trip warranted a stay at the Ace. Easy check-in, clean room, shared washrooms (did not bump into a single person over a two night stay). Good stay, but would likely stay somewhere else on the next visit. Rooms are small and can be noisy with other guests close by and stomping down the hall.

Nice to have Stumptown coffee in the lobby. Clyde Common (restaurant downstairs) is certainly worth a visit for both cocktails and food. Have enjoyed breakfast (previous trip) and dinner (this stay).

Room Tip: Back of hotel is quieter. Some rooms can be very noisy from other guests.
