M partner and i had to come to Portland to finalize the adoption of our 3 day old baby. While we have stayed in lovely hotels in Portland, we needed more for this trip - 2 rooms so one could sleep, while one took care of the baby; a kitchen to prepare formula, internet access to update the anxious relatives, a washer and dryer to do the newfound tons of laundry. We also wanted something tasteful, modern, and easy; no lace doilies or antique dolls.
Kinley Manor Coach House was perfect. I would highly recommend it to any of my pickiest friends.
It is a three-story arrangement. The enclosed garage and entrance are on the first floor.
The second floor is a living room, an open kitchen with a bar, and a bathroom. The hosts have cleverly made the most of the space by using counters that fold away if you want more space. The kitchen has all the basics you need to start, which is nice (spices, oils, tea, coffee, dish soap, paper towels, etc). The bathroom has an ample shower. The futon couch easily folds out into a bed, and has tasteful linens.
The loft has a queen-sized bed with a good firm mattress. (Don't you HATE lumpy mushy mattresses?)
One note: There is no dishwasher. They have a drying rack and dish soap, but if that is a deal breaker you should know. To balance that out, they have a laundry room on the first floor, which fulfilled a guilty pleasure for us - returning home with clean clothes!).
LOVED the location. Everything you need is in walking distance. Walked to the Safeway. Walked to the Pancake House, to the Sushi restaurant, to the Italian restaurant, to the Mall (with a Nordstrom's and a Barnes and Noble).
Easy access to the major highways. Parking was a breeze. Went for a 4 mile run in the historic Irvington neighborhood and dreamed of living in one of the large beautiful Victorians that are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood.
Rupert and Scott were perfect hosts. They welcomed us when we got there; gushed appropriately over our newborn and then cleared out quickly so we could get settled.
This is a great find. I will be recommending it to all of our friends coming to Portland. Grab it if you can.
