“Comfortable, great location”
Reviewed 3 November 2012

We just came back from a 5-night stay at the Heathman, and I was very pleased.

Our first impressions were good. Arriving in a downpour, we were greeted by smiling bellhops and a friendly concierge who quickly checked us in. Our room on the 7th floor faced a side street, which all but eliminated street noise. The room itself was cozy and attractive, and offered some useful amenities. Each of the lamps had a plug in its base, convenient for charging cell phones, etc. (and much better than some places, where I've had to hunt for the one remaining free outlet), and there was free coffee and tea available above the minibar. The robes and slippers provided were comfy, and just right for lounging around in over breakfast. I especially liked that the hotel lends you an umbrella (with nicely understated logo), since it rained at least some of the time each day of our stay. My only complaint - our room connected to the room next to us, which was ok for most of the stay (thank you, quiet neighbors!), but revealed its downside (and the reason adjoining rooms are my pet peeve) when a new guest decided to carry on a long phone conversation, every word of which was clearly audible - along with her TV - through the un-soundproofed door. Perhaps there should be a box to tick that says "no connected room, please!". On a purely positive note, the housekeeping staff deserve enormous credit for keeping the entire hotel spotless and offering turndown service each night combined with a quick additional clean.

The location of the hotel really can't be beat. It's right in the middle of downtown Portland, easy walking distance to the Pearl and Chinatown, and not far at all from the major bus/tram lines across the Willamette. I loved having Cacao in the lobby, and though we didn't actually use it until the last day, the library was a nice sitting area. My one minor quibble with the facilities is with the business center. The computer I tried was incredibly slow, with a version of IE so outdated Google popped up a warning about incompatible browsers. The hardware seemed buggy, too, with a faulty mouse and frustratingly unresponsive keyboard. The equipment looked sleek and modern, so it would have been nice to have it function that way, too. Maybe one easy fix would be to open up the printer to wireless printing from guest devices - those of us who care about having the latest and greatest could just work directly from our laptops and cellphones, since printing is really the only service I ever need from business centers, anyway.

In general, we thoroughly enjoyed Portland, and our stay at the Heathman was a big part of that. We'll be back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing Salmon St. or the back, and try to get one without a door connecting it to its...

Dear Emily H,
I am so excited to hear you had such a great arrival experience despite the downpour. It sounds like you had a nice time in Portland. I am sorry to hear that you had an issue with a noisy neighbor. I would be more than happy to place a note in your profile that you do not want a connecting room on your next stay. I have reported the issues you had with the business center computers to the I.T. Department. Thank you for letting me know about the issues, we definitely want the experience with all of our amenities to be a positive one. Thank you for the great feedback and I look forward to see you in the near future.

Best regards,
Linda Reagan

For a taste of intimate old world charm and exquisite service The Heathman Hotel should be on everyone's "bucket list". The rooms are admittedly on the small size, but in no way dated. And the staff knows how to make guests feel special and most welcomed. Try this boutique hotel!

Arrived at the Heathman for a short business stay. The staff was extremely helpful at every encounter. I stayed in a deluxe King. Perfect for me while working. The staff also showed me a few other room types for a longer stay I am planning later in the year. The bed was so comfortable and amazing linens made it hard to get up! I love all the artwork throughout the hotel and the library is amazing!
Thanks for an awesome stay, I will definitely be back.

Our family stayed in a Symphony suite for a wonderful night out on the town. Although we live pretty locally, the Heathamn was absolutely the perfect mini-vacation. We spent quite a bit of time in the library, getting to view their amazing collection of author signed books. The staff was very friendly, and knowledgable about any questions we had, and we felt that they went out of their way to make our stay special. Even for a one night getaway, with the experience we had, I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone coming into the Portland-Vancouver Metro area.

Room Tip: With the pull out sofa bed, and pocket doors to separate the sleeping areas, we loved the Symphony s...

Dear Jeremydejong81,
It is so great to hear you enjoyed the hotel so much and the staff. They are the best staff in Portland. The library at the Heathman Hotel is amazing for sure. Thank you for taking the time to spend some time there. It is great to hear how well the Symphony Suite worked out for you and your family. It is great to have 2 televisions and the pocket doors to separate the spaces. Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We hope to see you the next time your family needs a little getaway.
Thank you,

Old and historic make for small rooms, but very pleasant. We were forced into the Symphony Suite as the only left available -- at $320 per night. We have stayed in other hotels at this rate and general size, mostly in Europe. The room and hotel are very clean, neat and recently decorated, but degraded with rubber pillows on the bed. Service is good and the restaurant excellent. Our view is of a painted brick wall about 40 yards away. The room is certainly not a "suite" by American standards. I presume that the regular rooms are quite small. This is not in a class with a Kimpton Hotel. We will probably go elsewhere in Portland the next time, but will return to the restaurant.

Room Tip: I would not trust their reservation system. We called three days in advance and doubt they were ful...

Dear MontanaBunkhouse,
I am sorry to hear you had trouble booking the room that you initially wanted. It has been a very busy season for hotel travel in the Portland area. We are so happy we are able to accommodate so many of our great guests and you were able to try one of our suites. I am sorry that this particular suite did not work for you. We do have many different room types of all sizes. We should be able to find one that is comfortable for you if you choose to stay again. We also offer many choices in pillows. If you are not satisfied with the ones that are on your bed, please call and we will have some new ones brought right up. It sounds like you enjoyed a lot of the aspect of the hotel, so we do hope to see you on your next trip to Portland. Thank you for taking the time to submit a review.

We stayed two nights and enjoyed the ambiance and service was great. Room was a bit small but we were out most of time so it didn't matter and it had very nice and very comfortable furnishings. Clearly upgraded from your typical hotel room and the entire hotel has a special feeling of being upscale and low key at the same time. Spent time on the computer in their library area and that was a very nice and comfortable spot. Very good location in the city and easy to get around. Would definitely stay there next time we're in Portland

Room Tip: The tip is to ask for a room in a quiet location...this is in the heart of the city and while our ro...

Booked three nights through American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts.

We booked an Executive King and were advised at check in that we were upgraded to a Symphony Suite. While the room was comfortable, it was very cluttered. Lots of heavy furniture to maneuver around. We arrived at night so the curtains in the room were drawn. In the morning we saw that the windows face into a brick wall. The Executive King we booked had a city view. I'm really not sure if this is an upgrade. I think it would have been nice to mention brick wall view at check in.

Also regarding check in, the person who registers you at the hotel is also the bell-hop to bring your bags to the room. We were checked in by a nice, young lady who didn't weight more than 100 pounds. I felt odd having her lug our bags up and set them up in the room. Is this sexist on my part, or just gentlemanly?

Breakfast was included in our rate, but only $12 per day, per person. So each morning we went $20 over. Breakfast included?

Having mentioned these rather minor items, we absolutely enjoyed our stay and would come back to The Heathman anytime.

Dear 75xyr,
It is great to hear you enjoyed your stay and will come back to be our guests again. I do apologize for the issues you encountered during your stay. When you make reservations for your next visit we can note that you would like to be in the Executive King room and we will not change this. Typically the Symphony Suite is an upgrade as it is a larger room, but some guests do prefer the Executive King rooms over these rooms for their location.
I would be happy to discuss the other items further with you. You can contact me at lreagan@heathmanhotel.com or 503-241-4100.
Thank you for taking the time to submit a review.
