“Exceptional Service, Fantastic Location”
Reviewed 15 July 2014

Pulled up to the Heathman mid afternoon to a friendly gentleman in a beefeater outfit....kind of strange, but very cool. He clearly articulated the valet policy (in and out privileges at all times, just call in advance so we can have it ready for you) and welcomed us to the hotel. When we got to the front desk, we checked in with Michael, who provided brilliant service. It was brilliant in the way service can be when it is authentic, useful, and friendly....which the big chains try to train their employees to do, but rarely ever come close to achieving. Michael walked us through some things to do and see in the area with a map and recommendations, and was able to get us reservations at Andina, a Peruvian restaurant who previously told us they were booked full for the evening. When our meal finished at Andina, there were three small cookies for dessert from the Heathman....such a great touch of class.

The rooms are decorated well, comfortable, and even a tad hip.....and the location is fantastic. It was the service that truly set the hotel apart and was one of the best hospitality memories for myself and two business colleagues in hundreds of travel nights......and so I will be back to the Heathman every time I come to Portland. A big thank you to the staff for making our trip so memorable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room above the fifth floor so that the street noise doesn't interrupt your rest.

We stayed in a suite ( 419 ) overlooking the front street. They give you eyeshades and ear plugs at night although noise was not an issue. This is an older building, but completely remodeled. Be aware that pets are allowed ...we had a slightly barking dog next door to us.

Dear Dee5921,

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience of the Heathman Portland. Without your words and insight we could never deliver the level of service we strive for!
It sounds like most everything worked out perfectly for you and thank you for being so understanding regarding our pet policy. In the future, we welcome you to let us know about any hassle or noise you hear from neighboring canines. We would always be happy to look into a potential room move for you, if available.

Most importantly, we hope to welcome you back again soon and want to thank you, once again, for your great review!

Take care,

The Heathman Hotel understands the concept of service!

The hotel is a wonderful combination of classic and modern. The service is attentive--they don't miss a detail. Scott, one of the concierges, emailed us a few days before arrival to ask if there was anything he could do for us, like make restaurant suggestions/reservations or answer any questions. When we were arrived, Scott was on duty and checked us in. It was only 9 AM, so our room wasn't ready. He checked our bags, gave us a map and directions to things we wanted to see. He also asked if we were celebrating a special occasion, and we said that our anniversary had been a few days earlier. He congratulated us, and we went on our way to explore Portland.

We stopped back around 12:30 and found that our room was ready (usual check-in is 3 PM). Our luggage was waiting for us in the room, along with a bottle of wine and a nice note. What a lovely surprise! Scott also told the restaurant about our anniversary when he made the reservation, and they wished us Happy Anniversary, too.

There were lots of good details in the room. The bed was very comfortable. We asked for pillow top mattress--yes, they give you a choice! The bath had large, thick towels (and plenty of them), robes, and even slippers in the closet. They provide an electric kettle and French press for making coffee. The coffee fixings were in a lovely wooden box--very classy! Everything was absolutely spotless.

More good details in the bathroom included low-level lighting behind the mirror so that the bath wouldn't be completely dark at night. Brighter lighting is available when you need it. All of the fixtures were modern and the shower was great.

On the subject of lighting, this is my one negative. While the bath and separate vanity area had good lighting, the room itself could be brighter. And the hallway definitely needs better lighting. We were at the end of the hallway, and it was difficult to see to put the card key into the slot. This was not a huge issue for us, but it could be for some guests.

The room was not large, but that happens when you stay in an old hotel. (The Heathman belongs to the Historic Hotels of America program) We didn't find it cramped, so no complaints, just an observation. Our room faced a main street, but the double glazing and heaving drapes kept out all noises from outside.

I don't know if we'll get to Portland again, but I wouldn't hesitate to return to the Heathman!

What a review! Thank you! We couldn't be more pleased to hear of your experience! We are also so glad you were able to have such great interactions with Scott - isn't he a gem? We are very lucky to have such a accommodating and welcoming staff!
It also sounds like everything fit into your perfect Anniversary get away as well! What great news!
We do apologize for the issues with lighting and want you to know that we are currently discussing brightening the hallways in increase light source in some of our more dim bathroom vanity areas. We so appreciate your input and hope to have these improved upon soon!
Here's to seeing you for your next Anniversary holiday, if not sooner!

Thanks again!

I stayed at the Heathman recently with my spouse and adult daughter for 2 nights mid week. We had a suite on the 6th floor overlooking another building wall with a lovely mural. this is a hotel over 100 years old and small, 10 floors compared to what is built now 20-30 or more floors so the view is what it is. The rooms were recently redone and very nice. We had plenty of room to spread out and the bathroom was fine with a separate additional sink in another space. Large closet with safe and room for luggage etc. The service was perfect from the room staff to the dining room. We have stayed here before and will again for future trips to this wonderful city.

First the good, all of the hotel staff was very helpful and service was excellent. They helped us with dinner reservations, directions and valet parking. All were very accommodating and friendly.

Now the bad, we stayed in a basic room not an upgraded room. There was an adjoining room that was occupied. Any conversation in that room or the hallway was distractingly loud enough to be a distraction. The window had extra insulation pane so no road noise at all. They need to do something similar to address the other noise.

Room Tip: May have better luck with upgraded room to avoid hallway and adjoining room noise

Great hotel... The front desk went above and beyond the call to help us find a room and work with our schedule. The room was spotless and lovely. We felt considering all the other hotel prices the Heathman was on par. If you have AAA your parking is covered. Cannot imagine what could have improved our stay...how you say....perfect!

My wife and I stayed here for a night out alone. The place was perfect from desert before bed in the room to breakfast in bed the next morning. The rooms were nice and the hotel was perfectly located downtown.
