I stayed here 4 nights in room 115 which is one of the pet rooms. Despite being on the street level, the room was very very quiet. Most of the room noise came from the refrigerator and neighbors (both were moderately loud). The hotel was built in 1907ish, but managers/owners failed to keep the charm of the building. Kitchenette is nice but hardly needed when Whole Foods Market is right across the street.

Some discriminating, travel-savvy friends had stayed at the Mark Spencer and raved about it, so we booked a week there to take in a Leonard Cohen concert and two others, and do some Christmas shopping in the amazing Pearl District adjacent to the hotel.

A few days after booking, I learned that you could make an offer for a room or suite via their website, so I did, and they honoured the lower price.

The hotel is vintage, with upgrades done or in progress, and the standard of cleanliness is high. Service at the front desk is responsive and efficient, and the breakfast, afternoon tea and cookies, wine-tasting and free 24/7 cappuccino machine bring down the cost and bring guests together. The suites have kitchens, for those who want to further economize, and there's a big whole foods market two blocks away with a great selection of beers and wines.

The location is superb, with Powell's Books and several good restaurants and bars nearby, Portland's famous street food area quite close and, as mentioned, the Pearl shopping district starts right across the street. Portland is a safe and attractive walking city, but should it rain free streetcars run right by the hotel and will take you anywhere in minutes.

There's no gym, a minimal "business centre", and no bar or restaurant right in the hotel, but those weren't deficiencies for us, or the many other guests who were mainly leisure travellers.

Overall, the Mark Spencer is a safe, clean, calm hotel, one to which we will return at our earliest opportunity.

Room Tip: Suites are much bigger for just a few more $$$.

A beautifully remodeled hotel. It was a short walk to everything we wanted to see, where we wanted to eat and shop. The service from the staff was top notch, happily answering any questions we had with great advice. We stayed in a 1 room suite which I imagine is a little larger than most - it was great. The room was a corner room, so it was flooded with light. Our room faced a nightclub, so it was a little noisy at night, but as we had been busy all day, we were still able to fall asleep. A light breakfast was included, and while the selection was fine, there wasn't a lot of tables to eat at, so some had to eat in the lobby. We would certainly stay here again.

I decided on the Mark Spencer after a recommendation by a colleague. To be honest, I was looking at some of the other "funkier" hotels, but decided that I'd bid on a room here and give it a whirl. I was not, at all, disappointed.

I'm the kind of traveller that likes to stay in unique, eclectic places that have a cool vibe but are clean and quiet. There are some busier "funkier" hotels around, but I like my busy/funky to be elsewhere to where I sleep.

First: the location. It can't be beat if you want to hang out in the Pearl. You'll read everywhere about this - close to Powell's books (which was the most awesome book buying experience of my life), close to the water (voodoo donuts, saturday market), close to the livingroom theatre (drink a beer! watch a movie! eat dinner if you want!), etc. but what really was the cat's @ss for me was the cookies and tea and wine reception. What an awesome way to get your guests to socialize a little in a totally inviting atmosphere. plus the breakfasts were super hearty (and free all-day lattes). It made it a great deal.

I also liked how they had a little dog-shaped blackboard that listed the names of the pet visitors. Seriously, how cute is that.

what was the best was how CLEAN it was. the rooms were kind of retro but very very clean and bright. the hallways were great, the stairways were huge and bright, and the staff were all very, very nice. it was a really great place to stay. the (free in the downtown) streetcar stops just right down the street too.

Room Tip: Give the bid system a try!

Asked for a hotel recommendation from personel at Portland Jazz club, "Jimmy Mak's"
who highly recommended the "Mark Spencer". Called for reservation and asked about dinner and hotel staff made a reservation for us at one of the best Italian Restaurants we have found, (Piazza Italia"). Arrived early, Parked in MS garage enjoyed the afternoon visiting Powells book store and lunch at Whole Foods Market, ( all within a block or 2). Back to Mark Spencer and lobby was full of folks checking in. The staff were happy, friendly and very efficient. Our room was sparkling clean and bed was firm and comfortable. Personel-the best!!

Our visit got off to a rocky start as our room was not ready when we arrived at 4:30pm, and we were tired from driving. However, that was soon forgotten by the wonderful wine reception and comfortable room. The hotel staff was professional and accommodating. The all day coffee bar was great and I took full advantage of it. Check out is at a respectable time, too - 12 pm. I was even granted a check out time of 1 pm. The only opportunity for improvement that I noticed was that the housekeeping was average. The bathroom and bedding was spotless; however our room came with a small kitchen and dishes, and the dishes were not very clean. I had to wash them before we used them. On morning, I left a couple of coffee cups and small plates in the sink and housekeeping did not wash them, even though they had serviced the room. To me, that is a small sacrifice for a very comfortable and reasonable hotel in downtown Portland.

Room Tip: Watch for Living Social and Groupon deals.

This was the most enjoyable hotel I've stayed on. I submitted a bid for the price of my room, which was accepted. They have a terrific breakfast. Hard boiled eggs (shells removed), stainless steel flatware instead of plastic, good granola, and thank you for the incredible make-your-own-delicious cup of coffee. (You gotta' try it.) Location is perfect; there's a Stumptown coffee half a block away, I bought snacks at Whole Foods one block away, Powell Books is one block away, and there a block of food carts 2 short blocks away. Portland is a great walking city - a "Disneyland for Adults". A plethora of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and opportunities to get cash back on those credit cards.
