“I can't imagine a better place to stay”
Reviewed 15 August 2011

Having a car in Portland, particularly downtown, can become quite expensive. We chose this hotel because we wanted to be able to experience downtown and all the people, places, activities, etc. There is something for everyone within walking distance of the hotel and it lies within the "free" area for public transportation. Since there were 4 of us we stayed in an executive suite--king bed in the bedroom and queen sleeper sofa in the living area. A Whole Foods Market is 2 blocks away and we made good use of the kitchenette for snacks, sandwiches, etc. The breakfast was good but the coffee machine is amazing. My two twenty year old sons could not pass the machine without mixing up a coffee house style drink. And then there are the cookies--freshly baked each evening. (Since we had missed them on our arrival they gave us a plate full to enjoy as we checked in and unpacked) There is also a wine tasting each evening from 5-6 each day and we met several people we would have never spoken to otherwise in the casual atmosphere of the library. The only complaint that I heard from my family was that the water pressure in the shower could have been stronger. We would definately stay there again.

We chose this hotel because of its proximity to Powell's, which is definitely worth the hype, and we were glad we did. It's a great hotel for families--the in-room kitchenettes and the on-site laundry facilities came in very handy, and we appreciated the room set-up--the roomy "dressing room"/walk-in closet gave us a place to hang out and play Scrabble while our son slept (people who have shared hotel rooms with small kids understand the value of this after too many nights spent whispering in the bathroom after 8 pm.) The fancy coffee machine in the lobby was fun, too. The hotel is well-located, right near Pioneer Square and walking distance to some yummy food trucks, fun parks, etc. The hotel feels cool enough to give you a sense of Portland style, without being too aggressively hip. Highly recommended!

I booked my nights at the Marc Spencer because my regular hotels were either booked up or charging sky high rates. To say the Marc Spencer is dated would be kind. I think the decorators would have included my 90 year old grandmother. It looks old and smells a bit old and musty...not to be confused with a historic property - just old. I wouldn't think to stay here again except for the following: Exceptional staff & housekeeping; my suite was comfortable and included a full kitchen - which is great for me as a road warrior I am tired of restaurants; the perfect location - 1 block from Powells - the epicenter of Portland in my opinion. Overall, the Marc Spencer is a bit of a comfortable oddity which seems to perfectly fit the mood of Portland. The staff is exceptional, the location can't be beat and having the NY Times delivered to my door each morning was a nice touch. I will most certainly be back.

We booked The Mark Spenser on Venere.com, which was probably the first clue that the hotel wasn't of very high quality. Other hotels we've booked on Venere.com were also a little rundown and over-priced.

Our original room was on the first floor, a pebble's throw from the street and directly across from a nightclub. Tiny and very rundown (paint peeling on the walls, galley kitchen dating from the 1960s), our room had a very musty, moldy smell. It smelled like my Great Aunt Edna's house.

Concerned about both the potential noise and the unpleasant smell, we asked if there was another room available in the hotel. To the hotel's credit, they did find us something on the fifth floor. No hassles. No huffing or puffing. Just a "sure, here's your key to your new room."

The new room was considerably bigger. It also didn't have that musty odor. And it was fairly quiet (although we were right next to the elevators and could hear the doors sliding open and closed all night). The housekeeping was also impeccable.

The hotel reminds me a little of a halfway house that's been upgraded to a hotel. The galley kitchens, the dark hallways, the rusty doorknobs...and the truly awful beds (the metal rod goes all around the bed so that when you sit down, you can't help but think of those hideabeds with the bars) all would benefit from a welcome remodel.

For the money we spent, the hotel is hardly worth it. We spent well over $350 for two nights. Having stayed at other hotels in the same area, for about the same price, I know there is much nicer and much better around there. We won't be back to this one.

Perhaps stay at The Mark Spenser. But don't pay over $99 a night. Otherwise you'll be sorry.

Excellent location, convenient to shopping (only 1 block from Powells!) and restaurants. I appreciated free parking for my Hybrid Highlander. Well equipped rooms. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Lovely to sit and unwind with a glass of wine before dinner.

Located in the Pearl district, the Mark Spencer is in a wonderful location. Head in any direction and there are restaurants (from fine dining to street side vendors), first class mall to boutiques to funky shops, world class brew pubs, Jimmy Mac's world class jazz club. Steps away from mass transit. World famous Powell's Books only a couple of blocks.
The hotel staff is efficient and friendly. Ample breakfast, daily complimentary afternoon tea and wine, free wi-fi. Small kitchens in the rooms. Spacious, clean rooms.
We took the tri-met from the airport on the red line for approx $4.50 for 2 and got off at the library stop. Approx 10 min walk from the stop.

Room Tip: Rooms with views and/or near elevator can be noisy.
