“Very comfortable, great location, clean and friendly”
Reviewed 4 January 2013

I stayed ten days at the Mark Spencer. My room was large and nicely laid out. I liked having the kitchen although I didn't do much cooking. The staff at the Mark Spencer are all friendly and helpful, I felt welcome every day. The room was clean and everything worked. The hotel is close to everything in downtown Portland. The Mark Spencer has character and doesn't try to be trendy but it's a great value. Will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Stark St. can get a little busy on weekends but I didn't get a lot of noise on the 4th floor.

I stayed two nights just before Christmas, 2012, and would have enjoyed more time there. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean with an efficiency kitchen. The hotel provides an excellent continental breakfast in a cozy setting. The hotel is old, but is currently being upgraded and has a wonderful location. It advertises itself as supporting the arts. It has a rec room which I didn't use; instead I left my car in the hotel parking garage and walked all over NW Portland, enjoying the galleries, Multnomah County Library, the Craft Museum, Powell's Bookstore, a Lebanese restaurant, the Food Carts, and the engaging atmosphere of Portland. As a bonus, the hotel provided a room with free wrapping paper, tape, scissors, cookies and hot drinks. In this friendly roon with a fire flickering on the TV and Christmas carols playing, I was able to wrap the presents I'd brought on the plane and meet another woman also wrapping gifts. Ten years ago I'd stayed a night here and watched the "Santa Pub Crawl" pass by on the street below my window. This hotel embodies the best of Portland.

Room Tip: Ask for a room far from the noise of rennovation.

Everything in this hotel is just what it should be. The front desk staff is helpful and friendly, The location of this hotel is in central Portland. It's a short walk to Whole Foods, Powell's Books, nice restaurants, and shopping if that's what you want. The room is comfortable and a good size. In addition, there is a refrigerator and kitchenette in the room. There's a coffee machine in the lobby that actually dispenses decent coffee. Coffee and tea is available in the lobby all the time. There is a lounge with comfortable chairs where you can sit and enjoy your coffee, tea and read the newspaper that is left outside the door of your room every morning.. Breakfast is included in the room rate. The breakfast buffet was very good. Next time I need to go to Portland, I'll stay at the Mark Spencer.

Conveniently located for exploring downtown Pearl District! We could have walked from the Amtrak station but took a cab due to the late hour. Look up Charm in the dictionary and you'll see the public areas of this hotel. Where else have you stayed that provides a gift wrapping room with Christmas Cookies and hot cider/chocolate and egg nog and all the supplies you'd need to wrap your holiday gifts? Breakfast consists of a nice assortment of toasts/muffins/cereal/yougart and hot drinks and juice. In the afternoon there are cookies and tea. The rooms are squeeky clean and the beds are on par with a Marriott or Hilton. You can not go wrong here. The staff is friendly and helpful. This is an an amazing value for the price. We'll return on our next trip.

Room Tip: We were told that the hotel is being remodled from the 6th floor down. Some rooms may have been ren...

We had a very positive stay for a quick weekend in downtown Portland. The rooms and upper hallways could use a little updating but the beds were very comfortable. Felt very clean. Location is perfect, steps from the Pearl district. Afternoon wine reception, continental breakfast, latte machine are all nice extra touches. Parking convenient and inexpensive for the area. Can't go wrong for the price, value, and location.

The Mark Spencer Hotel appears to have been an apartment building which has been converted to a modest hotel. It is conviently located in downtown Portland within easy walking distance of the Pearl District and downtown shopping. The 'cultural district" is best reached by the streetcar which runs directly in front of the building. Speaking of streetcars: be sure to load/unload in the designated space in front of the building or you may get clipped by the streetcar. The hotel offers self parking for $18/day in a tight underground lot beneath the hotel.

The interior is simple but functional; most of the walls are bare and the furniture is well-used. Our King sized bed pracitically stretched from wall to wall in the bedroom. The bed was comfortable and we enjoyed the multiple small pillows. The kitchen has a full sized refrigerator and a historic 1970's electric range with multiple push-buttons to control the burner temperatures.

Recommended for business trips and for travelers concerned with convenience and price. Kenny and Zuk's across the street has fantastic house made pastrami. Also a good place for breakfast.

Room Tip: try to get a room on the interior courtyard to minimize traffic noise.

We found this nicely located hotel between the Portland Art Museum and Union Station - both within walking distance. We also like that it is near Powell's. We picked this place based on others' recommendations and were not disappointed. Our street-side, complimentary-upgraded suite was clean, quiet and comfortable. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We liked the afternoon tea as well as the mini wine bar happy hour. Breakfast was fine for its limited selection of items, but the coffee-espresso-latte machine made up for it. We've been to Portland several times in the past and stayed at more 'upscale' hotels for the same or discounted prices, but they are not as friendly as the Mark Spencer - we will be back again!
