“GREAT WEEKEND”
Reviewed 14 January 2013

My daughter got married in Portland the first week in January this year and because her reception was taking place in the Crystal Ball room, the Mark Spencer was one of the closest hotels to the venue. This hotel is conveniently located near the downtown area with lots of great restaurants and coffee shops near By. The staff is helpful and friendly. The lobby very clean and inviting with great white chocolate macadamia cookies. They also have coffee and tea available 24 hrs. , Including a great machine that makes anything from a capuchino to a mocha coffee. They also serve wine with cheese and crackers from 5 to 6 pm. Included in the rate you also get a continental breakfast which is not bad. The rooms are clean and beds comfortable. The only problem was the bathrooms didn't have bars for people with mobility problems for getting in and out of the bathtubs. I requested a room with a shower for my 78 year old mother and they told me there were none available. The bathrooms are old and the hair drier did not work. The parking is expensive at $18.00/per day but I understand it is hard to find parking in downtown Portland. I would definitely stay there again but I would not bring my mom back, since they can't accommodate people with disabilities. The best part of staying here is that there are a lot of shops within walking distance and I love to shop:)

This lovely hotel sits conveniently in the heart of town. Visitors can walk just about everywhere without transportation. I only had 4 hours to take in the Portland Art Museum, Abe's Bookstore, Voodoo Donuts, Stumptown Coffee, Portlandia and the many small shops dotting the area.

My room was neat as a button and the bed was comfortable. However, i was disturbed by loud hammering & drilling at 8am (next door) and requested to be moved. Although I moved to a lower floor, it was on the same side of the hotel where renovation work was in full swing.

Okay, enough on renovation noises ~ The self serve breakfast was good and I was able to take read a paper and take a short nap in the lounge area. This was our first trip to Portland, so I may stay at a bed & breakfast next time.

Room Tip: Beware renovations. Ask before booking a room.

First of all the location is perfect. One block to Powells.. the best book store and Sur la Table. The staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel is vintage so has a lot of character, was clean, comfortable and the linens were really soft. The wine served in the evening along with cheese and crackers was a really nice touch. We especially enjoyed the espresso machine in the mornings...Would like to come back to this Portland gem.

We only stayed one night, but had a great stay. They upgraded us to a Suite, and spoiled us with cookies and wine! The hotel is located right by cafe's, and shops. Parking was a little expensive but parking is spendy in every city. We really enjoyed this hotel and will be staying here again.

We arrived on Christmas day with our 17 year old son who slept on the pull out couch in the suite. Our accommodations were just fine, but the kid said the pull out wasn't the most comfortable bed in the world. We enjoyed great breakfasts, afternoon tea/cookies, and wine/appetizers each afternoon. This 100 year old family owned hotel isn't to be missed. My reason for 4/5 is that the kid complained that his pull out bed wasn't real cozy.

I stayed ten days at the Mark Spencer. My room was large and nicely laid out. I liked having the kitchen although I didn't do much cooking. The staff at the Mark Spencer are all friendly and helpful, I felt welcome every day. The room was clean and everything worked. The hotel is close to everything in downtown Portland. The Mark Spencer has character and doesn't try to be trendy but it's a great value. Will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Stark St. can get a little busy on weekends but I didn't get a lot of noise on the 4th floor.

I stayed two nights just before Christmas, 2012, and would have enjoyed more time there. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean with an efficiency kitchen. The hotel provides an excellent continental breakfast in a cozy setting. The hotel is old, but is currently being upgraded and has a wonderful location. It advertises itself as supporting the arts. It has a rec room which I didn't use; instead I left my car in the hotel parking garage and walked all over NW Portland, enjoying the galleries, Multnomah County Library, the Craft Museum, Powell's Bookstore, a Lebanese restaurant, the Food Carts, and the engaging atmosphere of Portland. As a bonus, the hotel provided a room with free wrapping paper, tape, scissors, cookies and hot drinks. In this friendly roon with a fire flickering on the TV and Christmas carols playing, I was able to wrap the presents I'd brought on the plane and meet another woman also wrapping gifts. Ten years ago I'd stayed a night here and watched the "Santa Pub Crawl" pass by on the street below my window. This hotel embodies the best of Portland.

Room Tip: Ask for a room far from the noise of rennovation.
