“The Mark Spencer Hotel - Cool and Funky”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2014

My wife and I just returned from Portland and stayed at this cool and funky hotel called "The Mark Spencer Hotel" where we very much enjoyed our stay; intact, we plan on staying there during our next visit to Portland. We found the staff very professional and helpful. In addition to the cleanliness of our room we were able to rent "Still In Theatre" movies from the television in our room, and cheese and wine tasting from 5 to 6 pm allowed us to enjoy the atrium room and socialize with other guests. We stayed in the Jr. Suite complete with kitchen stove, fridge, microwave and sink. We found this came in handy as we were able to put our leftovers in the fridge and warm it the next day in the oven or microwave. The only constructive criticism I would make is that the TV did not have the HDMI hook-up for a true HiDef signal and this would have made the movie we rented have a better picture (picture was stretched and not HiDef sharp). In addition to this it would have been great it we could have connected our computer to the TV, as we do when we have stayed at other hotels, so we could access our NetFlix account to watch other HiDef movies. Other than that, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we not hesitate to stay again.

Room Tip: cleanliness is next to godliness and location is of the utmost importance. If you want to be where t...

Just returned from our first visit as a family to Portland. The Mark Spencer is in a great location to access everything the city has to offer We stayed in a junior suite which gave us just the right amount of space. The kitchenette was very useful. The wine tasting and continental breakfasts were much welcomed. We will definitely return.

We reserved this hotel via Trivago/Expedia; landing what we considered to be a good deal for our 5-day getaway to Portland. We were not disappointed; rather we found just about everything about this hotel to be excellent (bed/mattresses let them down a little!). Seldom have we found a hotel that was more welcoming and professionally friendly towards their guests. From general manager Pam Coser down to all members of her staff that we ran into, they could not have been more pleasant; always willing to help, nothing was too much for them. And always with a smile on their face!
A special mention must go to Krit who signed us in upon arrival. Recalling an earlier TA review, we asked if we were to have one of their refurbished rooms. Unfortunately none were available when we checked in, however Krit promised to leave a note of our request for the morning staff ~ and, much to our delight, when enquiring the next morning front desk staff immediately recognized us and assured us there and then that we would be moved once the newer room had been vacated and cleaned. Upon our return to the hotel later in the day, we were delighted to find that all had been transferred .... and, as a "bonus", to an upgraded/king room! Other/personal touches were regularly experienced throughout our stay; Krit again working quietly behind the scene to ensure we enjoyed our stay.
Mention should also be made of the perfectly adequate (and free) breakfast that was laid on daily; also the hospitality/"happy hour" that was a welcomed relaxation at the end of the day spent walking the City's streets. As to location, it's ideal for those wishing to take in all the sights and sounds of Portland; and as for parking, we found none better than their $18/day rate. All very reasonable for city-centre parking.
In summary, it's a "high-five" from us; we have no hesitation in recommending The Mark Spencer.

Room Tip: Be aware of and patient with the renovations going on in the hotel. Request a newly decorated room...

A solo vacation trip, self titled "Discover the PacificNW", started in Portland at the Mark Spencer for 4 nights. As a gay, single traveler I found the hotel ideal. All the desk staff were gracious and helpful. The location is very central making it easy to walk everywhere - even over to the Eastside across the Burnside Bridge. Excellent restaurants and bars, including gay bars, nearby. Breakfast the usual continental but fresh and good variety. Would definitely recommend and certainly would stay there on a return visit.

Three friends and I found this hotel through a TravelZoo deal, and I am so glad we did. Every single hotel staff member we encountered was friendly, knowledgable and happy to help. Josh always seemed to be on call for anything we needed. The location is perfect, right in the part of town we loved most and easy to walk everywhere. It's a quick cab ride from Union Station and the front desk had a cab waiting for us. Powell's and Descheutes Brewery are blocks away. Our bed was so comfortable. My one friend did have to sleep on the sofa bed, which wasn't as ideal, but she seemed fine. My friend in another room had a great view. The nightly wine reception was quite nice and relaxing. The breakfast is basic, okay if you're in a hurry. But there are several nice spots nearby. Kenny and Zuke's across the street was good. Our fav breakfast spot was Cafe Theobroma, few min walk away - cute little French place. They are currently doing some remodeling, but it did not affect our stay in the least. The elevators are a bit small but, again, no issue. We loved having a small kitchen and fridge in our room! All in all, we loved our stay here and would absolutely come back. Thank you!

I'm sure you had quite a long cross-country trip from Florida! So glad you found your guestrooms comfortable. You can't beat Kenny & Zuke's for a deli experience. They make the best pastrami sandwich in town! You also said you found Cafe Theobroma. I hope you tried one of their delicious breakfast crepes. Their lunch salads are also quite good!
I will be happy to thank Josh for his service to you as well as the rest of my staff. Thank you for choosing to stay with us and we hope to see you again soon.

I lucked into one of the recently renovated rooms. It had a queen sized bed, a seating area, a desk, and a completely outfitted kitchen. I mean a kitchen with everything: stove, microwave, coffee maker, plates, glasses, cups, pots and pans, a cutting board, kitchen utensils, you name it. You would never guess that the hotel is under renovation. Somehow the workers get the job done without disturbing anyone.

The breakfast was very good, everything you might need for a fresh start in the morning, including a sophisticated coffee machine that makes every drink on the coffee shop menu.

The staff was helpful. I needed to reserve a seat on a bus or a train to Seattle, no problem. Laura took an interest my situation, and in a few minutes I had a ticket in my pocket, printed in the hotel office.

An hour later I saw Laura and one of her colleagues serving wine to guests who came down for the free jazz recital in the lobby.

The staff here seems to enjoy their work. My cleaning lady was from Burma. The room was impeccable.

Location counts. The Mark Spenser Hotel is one short block from Powell’s, the largest book store in America. It is also surrounded by coffee shops, bars, and interesting restaurants. You could come to Portland and spend all your time in a four or five block radius of this hotel.

My company was having their Christmas partyand we stayed at the Mark Spencer in December 2013. We were upgraded to a suite and given an early check in. It was wonderful, clean and so spacious, we had a mini kitchenette and a full walk in closet. The bed was awesome, so comfortable with lots of pillows. Free tea and cookies in the afternoon and coffee and danish in the morning. Easy check in and out with secured parking for the car. We will most definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: I called them directly instead of booking through a site.
