A comfortable hotel, not luxurious but more than adequate. The carpets are a little worn but the bed is comfortable and they put the NY Times in front of your door every morning. Breakfast is pretty good, as these things go. The immediate neighborhood is a little scruffy but I didn't feel at all unsafe at any hour of the day. Easy walking distance to many, many interesting attractions. And it's ONE AND-A-HALF BLOCKS from the biggest bookstore in the world. Also about the same distance from the numerous gourmet food carts on Alder.

This is one of my favorite places to stay. The staff is amazing. The price is right. The location is phenomenal. The rooms are charmingly old school. Breakfast in the morning is awesome. I have been recommending this place ever since and it is THE ONLY hotel I stay at now when I am in PDX. Definitely recommended, definitely one of my favorites.

Pluses are a friendly staff, good breakfast buffet, free wi-fi, small kitchen in the room (which you hardly need with the good restaurants nearby), New York Times on the doorstep in the morning, and you can see Powell's bookstore from street entrance.
Minuses are slightly old (but functional and clean) rooms with thin walls that can be noisy. Ask for a quiet room, either high in the building or at least on side away from the street with the bars.

The Mark Spencer Hotel is nested on the edge of Downtown Portland and The Pearl District. The Hotel is easily reached by either the MAX (lightrail) 4 blocks away or by the Portland Streetcar, that runs in front of the Hotel on 11 Avenue.

I've been staying at the Hotel for over 13 years, two to three times per year.

The breakfast selection, which is included in the price of the room, is nice mix of grab and go items, such as fruit and baked goods or items you can eat in your room or in the breakfast area or library; oatmeal, cereals, toast, hard-boiled eggs, fresh coffee 24 hours a day, tea and orange juice, plus more. A big bonus for all guests is the New York Times delivered to your room each morning, Monday through Saturday, again in the cost of the room.

The front desk employees are more than knowledgeable about the City and so willing to assist. Need an idea for a place to dine, they have it. Want to see a show or shop at a local busines, they can offer up suggestions. Michael and Minnoka have been with the Mark Spencer for any number of years and greet you each morning. Magic and Onielia, along with Zach are there later in the day for assistance. Christopher and Uncle Dave are the night audit guys, who make sure all is ready for you in the morning, upon your check out. They are also there to deliver a blanket if necessary or to open the locked lobby, in case you have forgotten your room key. Smiles are a given with this Staff and are all genuine in nature.

A nice relaxing tea time is offered all afternoons, with coffee, tea, iced water and lemonaide, along with a good selection of cookies. You might just happen to meet the owners, who may stop in to say hello to the employees, when dropping in for a quick cup of coffee or to drop off cookies.

The Hotel is also pet friendly, has Wi-Fi, along with parking below the Hotel or across the street.

Gus, the General Manager and Pam, who operates the front of the Hotel, are also both available during regular business hours, Monday through Friday. You won't be disappointed by this Hotel or the employees.

Loved, loved, loved this hotel. The front desk staff (Magic, Marianne, Michael & Zack) were awesome, especially our personal concierge Magic. When we got there on Friday night they had a complimentary wine bar and hors d'oeuvres furnished by the Seafood Grotto. Shrimp cakes were to die for!!! All in all the only criticism we had (and certainly not the fault of the hotel) was the sound of the nightclub down the street! If you want a good night sleep be sure to ask for an interior room which they graciously gave us for our second night stay. Location is also great. Can walk to just about anywhere.........great restaurants, shopping etc. Portland City Grill is also a must. Be sure to get there by 3:45 pm (they open at 4) if you want a window seat. Spectacular 360 view and delicious 1/2 price appetizers from 4:30 - 6:30 pm. Tamara Welch, 2010

Hello to all who might be heading to Portland, OR and looking for a clean, tasteful, and unbelievably well located hotel!

I recently stayed at the Mark Spencer while in Portland, and in addition to the above qualities, this Hotel had the most professional and friendliest staff I've ever encountered. From Oneilia who helped me to my room when I first arrived, to Zack at the front desk who checked me in with competence and cordiality, to the General Manager, Gus, who personally helped me get connected to the Hotel's wireless when I was too technologically challenged to do so myself, to Mike, Ann, and the woman from Cuba (sorry, I forgot your name) who were also there with a hand and a smile whenever either was needed, it was a great experience from start to finish. And, the final "above and beyond" touch was a post-it note with a smiley face on it and some delicious chocolates from Gus after HE had helped ME. Now THAT'S customer service!

Icing on the cake was the fact that the Mark Spencer is family owned and not a chain, and the many large and small touches drive that point home. In addition, it's a very environmentally friendly hotel and each room has its own blue recycling bin.

And if all that was not impressive enough, the Hotel is only one block from Powell's book store, making it the most perfect location for those who want to visit this shrine. THANKS, Mark Spencer!

Steps from Powell's Books and the Crystal Ballroom, a pleasant walk from downtown and the Chinese Garden, on a quiet block for a good night's sleep. Staff are welcoming, helpful but unobtrusive. Plenty of excellent restaurants nearby.
