From the moment we arrived it was Magic. (That's a pun. The woman working at the desk was named Magic. What are the chances?)

The Mark Spencer is located in Portland's Pearl District, only a couple of minutes off of I-5. A well-maintained older hotel with comfortable rooms - including a kitchen! - and a great staff, the Mark Spencer features thoughtful amenities such as a morning paper and breakfast as well as more intriguing touches such as afternoon tea and a complimentary wine-and-hors d'oeuvres hour. We checked in and by the time we'd dropped our bags and come back downstairs, Magic had printed up maps for our trip to Reed College. When we returned, having successfully kidnapped our smartypants writer friend, we enjoyed the wine and hors d'oeuvres before getting an excellent restaurant suggestion from Bailey. We were very happy at the Mark Spencer and would stay there again in a heartbeat.

I think that one of the keys to a successful stay at the Mark Spencer is choosing the right room for your group both in terms of size and location. The walls are thin -- so if you have a noisy neighbor you will hear them. Some rooms, however, don't share walls (like the bedrooms in x18). Sofa bed in our room was much in need of some assistance -- is there a comfortable soft bed out there anywhere in the world? If so, Mark Spencer should invest in them. Helpful and friendly staff, reasonable breakfast choices. Location near Powell's can't be beat if you are a book lover. We will continue to stay there when visiting Portland!

I came to portland on a budget and wanted to be near the Pearl. All the websites suggested this place. Not ones that had reviews mind you. I was so stoked to get a studio room for 115 a night! Yes of course when we arrived it was to good to be true. Yes at night there was a guy checking his track marks outside the door, and it is near the Pearl district but you need to walk thru two shady blocks first. Lets just say it is a 100 year old hotel and has not been touched. We walked in the room and I immediately called the Nines and said I would pay the extra 100 bucks to not be here. We did not even take our shoes off because it was so gross and there was hair on the shower wall. I would really hate for anyone to have the experience i did.

The Mark Spencer Hotel has a charm of its own. Our room was a roomy suite with kitchen facilities. The stove was old but still functional. The suite furniture was comfortable but nothing special. However, the bedroom decor was very inviting. We loved the location, especially that it was a block from Powell's City of Books.

I found reviews about Mark Spencer to be pretty much right on, and we enjoyed our recent stay.
We'd booked a junior suite, which had a nice little sitting area, but a very small bedroom. It was guy pride weekend, and several blocks just outside the hotel had live bands playing until midnight, and loud club just outside our street-front facing room.
Hotel's friendly staff upgraded us to quieter, inner executive suite, which was much, much bigger. So, if you're they type that likes a little more room, you should really consider the exec. suite -- bigger everything -- sitting area, dining area, bedroom, storage.

This hotel is a very nice hotel in a very good location. The rooms are clean and comfortable and quiet. The hotel was once an apartment building, so the rooms have mini-kitchens with a refrigerator, stove, and sink. The rooms have dishes, pans, utensils, and everything you need to cook. There is a Whole Foods Market walking distance, so its easy to pick up some quick groceries. There are lots of very good restaurants and micro-breweries walking distance, so there is no need to cook if you don't want to. There is shopping nearby as well. The free breakfast provided by the hotel is excellent; the pastries are fresh and delicious and look like they may have been purchased from Whole Foods. In addition to breakfast, the hotel provides afternoon cookies or pastries and tea and coffee. The staff is very nice and helpful.

The hotel is also "green". There are recycling cans in each room. The shampoo, conditioner, and soap are in dispensers rather than providing little disposable plastic bottles. The breakfast places are glass and washed rather than disposable.

Overall, its a great place to stay in Portland, and I would not hesitate to go back.

I stayed in a lot of places during a 4 week driving holiday in the Pacific North West...some good and some not so good.

This hotel was by far the best and great value also. Super helpful and friendly staff, great location, very good buffet breakfast, free wine tasting every evening, free parking (special offer), laundry room, clean, very confortable rooms and beds. Everything you could want in a hotel.

One area for improvement would be free internet access on the lobby PC. But this is a very minor point.

Overall...I loved it. Great hotel in a great city.
