“Great value for a comfortable stay in a great location”

A nicely restored older hotel right next to the Pearl district. The rooms are large and well appointed, free wi-fi, and a pretty good free continental breakfast is included. Parking is an additional $16 per night but there is plenty of free overnight parking on the streets nearby.

Got a great rate by calling the hotel directly (vs. their on line site which quoted a higher rate and sites like Orbitz and Expedia and Hotels.com which also quoted higher rates for this property. Had nice one bedroom with kitchenette on the quiet (west facing) part of the hotel. Free NY Times at your door, tea and cookies at 3pm, and wine reception (weekdays) from 5-6pm (and of course breakfast). Warning: This is not a cookie cutter, plastic business hotel nor will you get points for staying here. Front desk and other staff very competent. I am a picky traveller but honestly don't have any negatives (ok, they could provide free bicycles like the ACE Hotel down the street does. For dinner, try Jake's around the corner. The Stumptown Coffee on Stark opens at 6am. The NY style deli is across the street. Pearl District is across Burnside. A great value choice in downtown Portland.

We booked this hotel last minute and were pleasantly surprised. The staff couldn't have been more helpful particularly the front desk. We loved the free wine and cheese in the evening, and everyone was so friendly. The rooms could definitely do with some updating and TLC, but the location was perfect - and who wants to spend all their time in Portland in a hotel room anyway?

This hotel is well located in Portland, across the road from the amazing Powell's bookstore and the great Jake's restaurant. This location means that it is in the middle of the city, so expect appropriate city noise and you will be OK (traffic, people leaving clubs and bars). Room was very well resourced, with a fully working kitchen. Free breakfast was perfectly adequate, wine was offered in the afternoon, but too busy enjoying Portland to return to hotel for this. Why people should be concerned about the entrance is baffling, who ever booked a hotel because the entrance was lovely, I thought it was the rooms that mattered?

Yes, this is a long description but necessary.

Upon entering the Mark Spencer one is filled with hope of a pleasant experience. The help is friendly and courteous and the lobby pleasantly decorated. However... as soon as we entered the room it was apparent that the rooms did not match the lobby's ambiance. Firstly, I had to be careful opening the door as to not hit the back wall with it (i.e. EXTREMELY small room). Looking out the window I saw a brick wall for a view. The windows were open and the smell of asphalt (apparently wafting down from the roof) was nauseating. At this point I went to ask for a new room, something larger perhaps? The courteous staff looked at me strangely (I guess no one had ever asked this questions previously?) and informed me that they were booked. In the spirit of cooperation we decided to be accommodating (hold it, isn't that what a Hotel should be?) and went back to our closet (whoops I mean room). We went out and had a fabulous meal and then returned for a nights sleep. We had to close the windows due to the asphalt smell and turn on the air conditioning. The unit is likely one of the first ever made and made the environment worse. After finally falling asleep a couple fo hours later we were woken up by a door slamming at 11:30. This door slamming continued every fifteen minutes for the next three hours. We finally fell asleep for a couple of hours after realizing that the regular door slamming had finally ceased. We woke at around 6am due to a lack of oxygen and decided to cut our losses and run. Upon entering the shower I realized it as an "Eco-Shower", and fifteen minutes later I was wet. After finally cleaning up and getting ready to escape we decided to try the continental breakfast. There were bagels and croissants from Safeway I presume (likely a day or two old), a couple of pieces of fruit and some cold cereal; we declined. The coffee came from a machine and actually wasn't too bad.

We finally escaped the Mark Spencer and headed out of town. We had planned to spend the morning in downtown Portland, which we love, but decided we needed to get away as soon as possible. Unless you want to experience life like that of a Bosnia apartment during the war, look elsewhere. Thanks for reading.

My family and I have been coming to Portland for many years and find that the Mark Spencer Hotel meets our needs. It has the charm of old Portland but with modern conveniences. The rooms are spacious and the one bedroom suites come with full kitchen facilities. The continental breakfast is more than adequate and with enough eating areas. The parking has been made easier now with the garage being adjacent to the hotel. We always plan on staying at this hotel when in Portland.
