A friend suggested we stay here and we gave it a try. It's about 6 miles from the town or Prairie and, as the name suggests, in an old one-room school house. It's situated on the John Day River and has great views of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness area.

The rooms were huge! It is decorated in cowboy/ranch, which makes sense, as the owner is a 5th generation cattle-rancher. Each room had a comfy double bed, nice chairs to lounge around in, and a kitchen table. We were the only guests, so we opened the doors and had a doube room. The owner generally tries to rent out to one client at a time, and uses the double for larger famililes.

It's all very casual. When we arrived, there was a note on the blackboard" "Welcome. Gone to Bend. Come on in."

The breakfast was great, as fresh fruit picked in the morning was part of the fare.

Judy, the manager/owner, is more than happy to fill you in on the history of the school house and cattle ranching.

Be forewarned that it is somewhat out of the way. You'll have to drive to Pararie or John Day for dinner.

But nights are peaceful and starry, and you'll enjoy sitting outside watching the horses graze and the sun setting on the mountains.

Room Tip: The room "in back" is nicest, but changes are you'll have both!

It was all too good to be true, but since it was our honeymoon, it was just damn good. After deciding that the generic motels of John Day weren't our thing, we stopped in nearby Prairie City and asked a local pruning her roses if she knew of any nice bed and breakfasts. She suggested we ride down this country road and that there were two to choose from.

We were stopped by a battalion of cows being moved to new pasture (a bona fide cultural experience for two urbanites), and asked the accompanying cowboy if we were on the right track.

As the name suggests, the Riverside Schoolhouse is an old country school house that sits right on a fork of the John Day River. It has two rooms that are divided by a door that could be opened if you wanted to have a large group. Each unit is huge and has a kitchen and private bath. The rooms are cute and rustic without the frilly country craft.

The proprietor is a very friendly woman and her husband and two sons are bona fide ranchers. The scenery is absolutely stunning. My wife and I walked along the country road and ended up talking to one of the sons on his horse for a half hour as the sun set over the Strawberry Mountains.

There were two double beds in the front unit and one bed and a pullout couch on the back one, which was vacant when we were there. We hadn't made reservations but we were served a nice oatmeal, juice, and muffin breakfast.
