“Relaxation at its best”
Reviewed 28 June 2005

Rockaway Beach is like taking a step back into the 1950's. It is a quiet little town full of friendly residents, interesting shops and great little restaurants. The sunsets were so colorful and inspiring. We just couldn't get enough of the beach with all its sights and sounds. The staff at Rockaway Beach Resort was extremely helpful with providing information about the surrounding areas and suggestions on activities that were interesting as well as fun. Our room was located facing the ocean, so we were able to have an awesome view all day. We highly reccomend this area to anyone who wishes to enjoy nature and relaxation to its fullest.

View, View & More View! We stayed at the "Rockaway Beach Resort" for 7 nights in the latter half of February 2005 with NO complaints.

I have included a few photographs that you should be able to click on at the top of this review.

"Rockaway Beach" is about 16 miles North on US 101 from the Oregon coastal town of "Tillamook", Oregon. It is also a few miles South of the small bay town of "Wheeler", Oregon on US 101. As you are driving north on US 101, and first entering the town of "Rockaway Beach", you will pass an intersecting street named "South 6th". Do not let this fool you. As the correct street to turn left on, to get to the hotel is on "NORTH 6th" street. Not the south. So you must continue through town heading north until the street names change to north. When you start getting near North 6th street you will see on your right side "Beach Pancake & Dinner" restaurant, then "Upper Crust Pizza" restaurant. Just after passing the "Upper Crust Pizza" restaurant start looking up and to your left. On North 6th street you will see a large blue sign, up in the air on a steel pole saying "Rockaway Beach Resort". Turn left here, cross over the railroad tracks, then go up one block and the road runs directly into the "Rockaway Beach Resort" office parking lot. If you miss your turn at North 6th street the next restaurant you will see on your right is "The Foghorn Sports Pub and Grill". If you see the Foghorn you know you went to far. Turn around and go back to North 6th street.

Check-in time was 4:00 p.m. And checkout time was 11:00 a.m.

We had made our reservations 1-week before we arrived via Internet. When we checked-in our reservations were correct and quickly and professionally handled. All of the counter people were very friendly. They went out of their way to welcome us to their "Rockaway Beach Resort". They took lots of time to explain to us what was available for us to use and do at the hotel on site. And the next morning at 9:00 a.m. they had a free continental breakfast and a Local guide gave an hour-long talk explaining all the tourist attractions, restaurants, events, activities going on in the area. This was NOT a time share presentation. It was a very nicely done area orientation. I am not sure, but they may only do this on Saturdays. In the office they have a very nice library of books and brochures. You can find all the restaurant menus, tourist attraction information and prices, books on how to crab, fish, where to hike, and day car excursions of the area. And the front desk people are always happy to help you plan your day or activity. I was very impressed with this. They also have a lot of videos that you can rent for $2.00 each.

FANTASTIC location directly on the beach with out obstructed view. This is one of the few hotel/condo's that is located directly on the beach. There is about 12 feet of lawn, with a few picnic tables, and then the beautiful almost flat beach and extremely clean beach. You will go down about 6 steps that have been set into place with flat rocks; edges painted in caution yellow and presto you are on the beach. The beach here is beautiful! It is almost flat in its slope from the land to the sea. There are not many rocks; it is almost all beautiful white soft sand. A true pleasure to walk on. This is a walking beach. Because of how flat it is, and I was told it runs like this for around 7 miles, it is a great beach to walk or run on. And I see a lot of people doing just that. You can build a campfire on the beach as long as it is 50 feet from the grass. No cars are allowed on this beach.

I think this hotel is basically one-bedroom condo units with full kitchens. Our kitchen was fully furnished with full size refrigerator/freezer, stove with oven, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, other food processors, tons of cooking utensils, plates, cups, bowls, every thing you need to cook most meals. The only thing that the units do not have is a dishwasher. I was told that the condo is about 800 square feet. They are very large. Our condo had a queen-size bed with a large size remote controlled television in the bedroom. We also had a queen-size bed in the front room with an additional queen size pull out hide-a-sofa couch. The two beds were EXTREAMLY comfortable. We did not try the hide-a-bed. I will tell you that this room was VERY comfortable and became more of a home away from home each additional day that we stayed there. We had a large television and a VCR on cable. The cable had tons of stations, as many as in the big city of "Portland", Oregon, with great reception. We had a second floor unit. There are 3 levels of units and no elevator. We had about 8 stair steps that went up to a landing (resting-place), and then another 8 steps up to our second level. The office said that if you have problems with stairs to tell them at the time of booking. They will make every effort to place you in a ground level unit without any stairs. If you can handle the stair steps ok, I will recommend a second or top floor unit. I feel the view is better and I noticed that if you had a ground level unit, you might have an occasional small tree or tall grass to look over or around. No big deal, but for a totally clear view go for the second or third level units. Since we were on the second floor, we could occasionally hear a muffled sound of the people banging around in the unit above us. But nothing un-tolerable.

The room was very clean, bright, modern and did not have any smells. The entire complex including even the outside property is all non-smoking. The only window that you have in the living area (there is also a large window above the bed in the main bedroom) is an extra large (about double the size of most sliders) sliding glass door facing the ocean. It opens out onto a very nice, all plastic balcony, which is large enough to really use. One comment about the balcony is that they are NOT private. Each unit's balcony is separated from the next-door unit with an above waste height picket fence, same as the main railing. They did not put up a privacy wall in order to keep the view of the beach and ocean as open as possible to all units. So, you may see your neighbors and in some cases many neighbors out on the balcony at the same time you are out there. Also, I noticed that the south building units do NOT have balconies. I am not sure what this is all about, but I think people own these units. But if you want a balcony I would be sure to ask while making your reservation. There is a self-service laundry and ice machine on the ground level on the north end of the building. It takes quarters and they provide the soap. Also, you can exchange towels or sheets any time you want for free. Just take them to house keeping and they are very happy to do so for you. There is no daily maid service.

They have a small indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, all overlooking the beach and ocean. There is also a large recreation room above the swimming pool. It has a pool table, other table games, TV, stereo, telescope, high speed Internet computer ($5.00 per hour), coffee maker, tons of sofas, stuffed chairs, magazines, games, books and more. It has a fantastic view over looking the beach and ocean. A very nice place to meet a bunch of your friends.

Parking is in short supply. One car per unit with other cars needing to be parked on the street. Also boats and boat trailers will need to be parked on the street. This might be a bit of a problem.

Rockaway Beach is NOT a party town. It is very quite and deeply relaxing. A great place to go to beat the summer crowds at other more known coastal towns. If you want nightlife, you will need to drive into "Tillamook" or "Sea Side".

We ate at the "Upper Crust Pizza" restaurant, which is only a few blocks away. This is a "must eat at" restaurant. It is owned and ran by a husband and wife team for over 7 years. If it is not fresh, they do not use it. They cook and slice all their own meets. They really go the extra mile to make some of the best pizzas I have ever eaten. They also make "to go" orders, so you can call them from the hotel, pick it up, and enjoy it out on the deck watching a beautiful sunset. The owners make it a point to talk with and to get to know all their customers. You leave there having made some new friends. All the people that were there seemed to LOVE this place and its ambience. I HIGHLY recommend eating here.

We fell in love with the "Rockaway Beach Resort". Not because it is fancy (it is just average for an older condo), but because it is just so relaxing, comfortable, beautiful view, wonderful friendly other people, and very friendly personnel that work for the hotel. I would rate this as about a 2&1/2 star hotel but a 4 star on Tripadvisor rating. Why, well it is the overall feeling, warmth, beauty, comfort and relaxation that this place gives you. They told me that they try to completely remodel 4 units each year. Some units may look a bit more outdated than others. So you might want to ask when your unit was last updated if this is a concern to you. Also I would guess that this is a 1960's or 1970's building, but the outside of the building has all been updated with vinyl siding, decking, railings, double pane vinyl windows. It looks nice.

Some of the tourist site day excursions that we went on were: Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, Tillamook Cheese Factory, Tillamook Air Museum, Garibaldi Boat Basin, Astoria Column, Columbia River Maritime Museum and many of the small coastal towns from "Pacific City", Oregon up to "Long Beach", Washington. I have written separate reviews of many of these sites to be posted on Tripadvisor. Just search for them.

It is not a 4 or 5 star hotel, but we love it and can't wait to get back.................Enjoy!

We come here regularly and always have a good experience. Of course, Rockaway has the best "beach" in Oregon and the resort is right on the sand with easy access. All rooms have a deck with chairs. The indoor pool overlooks the ocean and above it is a rec room. These are timeshares, so they have all the comforts of home within their 1 and 2 bedroom suites with 2 baths plus kitchenettes and gas fireplaces. There are also BBQs available to use for your fresh surf and turf you can find at Larry's Market. If you don't feel like cooking, the Resort is very close to the best pizza on the earth at Upper Crust Pizza (try the hearth bread too) Honestly, the reasons we come to the beach are to eat pizza on our deck and just chill out then fall asleep to the sound of the crashing waves. Some trips we never even step foot on the sand!
