“Look no further in Salem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 March 2014

First off...4 stars because it's Salem. In any big city (Portland or larger) it is a solid 3, maybe 3.5. No complaints, very nice staff, clean, comfortable room and what downtown convention center hotel still offers free parking...oh wait, it's Salem. Best way for me to explain it...If you've ever been to Vegas it's like a top-notch local joint ( South Point, Green Valley Ranch) and just misses the mark of being a mid-level strip hotel (Mirage, Paris, etc.). But for no specific reason than it's just not.

I had a great sleep in a clean, comfortable bed with the right amount of pillows and triple sheeted. Never turned on the flat panel TV and the room was not too noisy. I slept all the way through to my alarm. The breakfast is decidedly 3 star regardless of locale---it wasn't bad per se but didn't offer enough choice (sausage links only no bacon, very limited vegetarian options) and was just meh.

Finally, tripadv software wouldn't let me put this under the green practices section: Any hotel in the Northwest where water is abundant and cheap drives me crazy when they put out the save a towel card and use low flow shower heads. They're just trying to save money on the water bill so Be honest: "Help us continue offering you a pleasant stay at a good value, please reuse towels..." rather than the usual "save water" as it's pouring down rain outside. In LA, Vegas, Phoenix, ok I get it, but this is the NW and we have water!

So, all in all, of the other hotel choices, especially for business, The Grand Hotel fits the bill and is a nice place to which I'd return.

Room Tip: I always like as high as possible away from elevator, but in this case I was above some rooftop HVAC...

Still the best place to stay.. So close to all the evening action and great restaurants. Beautifully appointed and well kept up. Attentive staff.

Parking is a breeze and breakfast is to die for. Try it....you'll like it!

I have stayed at the Grand in past years and it is as good as it has been. The rooms are well furnished and roomy. There is a good exercise pool area. The free underground parking parking is a great perk given the frequent rain on my visits to Oregon. The breakfast is fresh and extensive with a friendly staff serving you. Location is right in the center of shopping and close to the capitol and Willamette University.

Room Tip: Halls are very long, so if you don't want to walk far form the elevator, ask the desk staff wher...

Ryan,

Thank you for the feedback, I'm glad to see that a little over a year later you still felt good about the hotel! We just celebrated our 9 year anniversary and will be doing some additional updates to guest rooms beginning this coming winter.

Safe travels,

The room's ambiance was warm and welcoming. The bed and especially the pillows were so comfy. My husband loved staying so close to the river trail so he could go for a run. Shopping and restaurants were a short walk. We ate in the hotel restaurant and our food was excellent, especially the salads. I love that the windows open for ventilation. The room has a small sofa and coffee table which was nice. The tv was a little small but we only watched the news. It was much nicer than I expected of an older downtown hotel.

Room Tip: I asked if there was a room with a view and we got a room on the top floor. The windows opened for...

Far superior to other hotels in this city. Have stayed here twice on personal business trips. Impressive, older style lobby. Spacious, well-appointed studio-style room with comfortable bed and nice sofa in living room area. Wireless internet access worked well, without fuss. In room coffee of very good quality, great to have fridge and microwave handy. Bath room was clean and attractive. Friendly, helpful staff. Complimentary self-serve buffet breakfast was quite good, some variation day-to-day, extremely nice attendant managing the breakfast room. Hotel restaurant offers very good Northwest grill offerings, impressive-looking bar. Prime location within easy walking distance to state capitol offices, Willamette University, local restaurants and downtown shopping.

Very minor minuses: no on-site coffee shop; on-site convenience shop a bit sparse (small but good wine selection), but these issues are easily remedied by the proximity of area coffee shops and drug stores. Overall, if you're passing through Salem, this is the business class place to stay.

For Salem, this is as good as it gets! Well done, clean and beautiful.

The rooms are well done. Beds are very nice. Everything is up-to-date.

The staff is very helpful,

There is an onsite restaurant which is pretty good. The food is sometimes very good, and sometimes overly salty.

Came to visit Willamette University, which is literally right within blocks of this hotel and the capital. The hotel is beautiful and the rooms were comfortable. There was a weird "locked closet" in my room, one that if you watch too much CSI, you might get creeped out by it presence. I had the handicapped room, which was larger, but didn't love that creepy closet.
Beds comfy and the rooms were quiet, so I had a pleasant stay.
Staff a front desk were busy one minute and seemingly bored the next- as I sat a bit to rest from a run. It seemed when I needed help on check-in and check-out, I had to wait. GO figure

Room Tip: Ask for non-street side.

Dear Keepersmit,

Thank you for your review, I presume that the room you were assigned to has it's heating/cooling unit in the closet so that it and control the bedroom and living room area. The area is only large enough to hold the HVAC unit and that is why those rooms have an amoire rather than a dedicated closet space. We do apologize for any frustration that was caused by having to wait to check out.

See you next time you come back to the college,
