“What a GREAT family vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 January 2009

Went there for a stay of 7 days. Rented out the cottage and one of the rooms in the main house. The cottage was great. Gave us plenty of room to relax and not be on top of each other. The cottage is a little dated and could use some improvements, but still perfect for what we needed. The room inside the house was very comfortable with a really nice and new bathroom. It was decorated really nice. The food was great, the staff awesome. My kids (4 of them) had a vacation to always remember. They talk about it to this day. The horses were awesome. We were able to move about independently for some of the time. I would HIGHLY recommend this place. No TV, no internet. LOVED IT!!! No cell phone coverage....not so good. Really, can't say enough good things about the people and the kindness that they showed us!

We stayed at Long Hollow over an extended Labor day Weekend, our third. We found it to be as relaxing and peaceful as ever.

It's quiet for those who want it that way - no TV! - and active for those who want to enjoy the ranch and the horse riding with the best young wranglers imaginable.

It is a true working family ranch - cattle, horses, barn cats, dogs (well-behaved, hardly a bark) - and we were offered the opportunity to be involved in ranch affairs - stable door hanging in our case - and some of the better riders went on a real cattle round up during our previous visit.

The location in central Oregon is beautiful, and the staff are wonderful, caring people. The friendly atmosphere was best represented at the family-around-the-table meals, where truly great food was served.

The period bedroom we stayed in was comfortable and well appointed in the 100+ refurbished historic main house.

We were also able to go to Sisters - a darling small Western town - which is only 20 minutes away, and I sampled one of the local golf courses, Aspen Lakes, which is spectacular.

We came away relaxed and refreshed from the best short vacation of our lives. We felt totally accepted as family friends from the moment we arrived and we left determined to be back as soon as possible.

IG/JG, Washington State, USA.

We booked the cottage for me, my mum and my 3 children. We had a wonderful time. The food was excellent, the riding was great, the location is stunning, the owners were warm and kind, and the highlight was the cook-out and carriage ride. It was a really lovely holiday and I genuinely enjoyed every minute. The location allows for some wonderful day trips into Sisters and Bend. Would whole heartedly recommend Long Hollow Ranch. (Incidentally, recommended the Ranch to my brother and girlfriend with no kids and they also had a great time!)

We stayed at the Long Hollow for a week. We were mystified to read the review that said it was Christian based! The owners, Dick and Shirley were away, but we were very well looked after by Lizzie the cook and the lovely wrangler girls.

An excellent place for beginners such as ourselves with patient tuition and gentle trails, although it was very hot and dusty in the afternoons so we mainly did morning rides and explored the area including the gorgeous town of Sisters with a fantastic coffee co.

Food was simple, plentiful and very tasty. Snacks like cookies and cupcakes were always around (unfortunately very good which didn't help our waistlines!). Alcohol is not offered, but it is no problem to bring your own to dinner.

An ideal location for a tranquil, low key vacation.

  • Liked — Lovely room, peace and quiet and 1/2 day white water trip that was included in weekly rate.
  • Disliked — Nothing.

If you visit Long Hollow Dude Ranches website, or that of the American Dude Ranch Organization for that matter, you won't find any mention of it being Christian based. Now, to many that fact alone won't make any difference. But, to those who are of other faiths other than Christianity (and there's plenty out there), the misrepresentation of what the ranch is about can be too much. There are plenty of Christian folk who would love a dude ranch experience at a Christian based property, and then there are those of us who do not wish to have the Christian faith imposed upon us when we are simply on vacation. The owners place the "fish" symbol on their brochure (which we didn't see until we arrived at the ranch), and purposely do not place it on their website as they were advised they may scare people away... After you get beyond the bibles and religious sayings all over the ranch house and in the guest rooms, have the meal blessed and listen to the owners and their staff talk about their next Missionary endeavour, the location is beautiful and serene. The cook that the ranch has employed this year should be fired. I didn't realize that people still made Jello salads! If you want a diet overloaded with mayonnaise, this is the place for you. No home cooking here as the best menu items where the pre-packed ones from Costco. If a 90 minute nose to tail trail ride is your gig (around the same dusty trail) then you'll be fine. But, if you want more of a riding experience and are not a complete beginner then you won't find what you're looking for here. Nice horses and a great location, but beyond that... very expensive and overpriced and not worth the $400+ per night for what you get. Food is limited and not available other than at meal times and no alcohol is available. On arrival we were shown our rooms and the coffee/tea station (lipton tea and Nescafe Instant with Coffee Mate) where we could help ourselves. Dinner was at 6pm and if you didn't have coffee at the beginning of your meal there wasn't any available (other than the instant stuff) until the next morning for the 8am breakfast. At first we thought it would be an ideal retreat for people of the Christian faith, but then we couldn't think who would like this ranch as the food was so bad and the riding so boring, and the prices so expensive.
