The menu offers authentic dishes. The tajine with lamb shank and choice of sauce is outstanding. Includes hummus starter, soup, marinated vegetables and the main. Service is very friendly, great sense of humor and efficient. We didn't have room for dessert! Will be back next time we are in town.

For anyone who has eaten in the souks of Morocco, Dar Essalam will bring back pleasant memories of authentic Moroccan food. From the fresh mint tea poured from on high so that the scent wafts over the table, to the delicious ox tail tagine with a pea olive sauce, to the final pouring on our hands of orange blossom essence, the restaurant is a delight for all senses. A wonderful surprise to find in this small Oregon town and one that we will certainly return to.

This has because our favorite family restaurant. We have eaten here about 5 times now and every single time we leave smiling. The food is always good, the service is always beyond the expected and personal and the mint tea is delicious and never ending. Try the lamb, try the hen, try any dessert. You will not be disappointed. No need for us to go into Portland for a good dinner!

Do I write a review about a "neighborhood secret" and lose the secret? Yes! It seems to be getting out, anyway, and this place is worth putting on a "regular list." The ambiance is very nice - it's in a small strip across from a park, but that's all left behind upon walking through the door. A pot of Moroccan spearmint tea is a good way to start, and the "standard" stuff like kabobs are there, but the tajine (hearty, savory stew, with plenty of warm pita to sop it up) is the main event, especially in winter. We actually do far more takeout than dine-in, and a tajine to go will more than satisfy. I go for the lamb shank, but it's one of the few places where I'd order chicken. Most of the menu is gluten-free on its own, so it doesn't require special preparation (just make that clear to avoid the pita). This is a meal to be savored: tajines take 20-30 min to make, so order a pot of tea, relax, and enjoy (or call it, pick it up, and enjoy). No alcohol is served, and the food does just fine on its own.

I have been here twice now, once with my son who is a real foodie, and once with girlfriends. Couldn't believe there was such a wonderful place is such a sleepy town. I thought the lamb Tisane was out of this world. Also had a spinach dish which was excellent as well. The staff is knowledgeable and the owner checks in with each and every guest at least once. The tea was a little sweet for my taste, but the pita and humus was wonderful!
