“Brings back old memories”
Reviewed 12 August 2010

When I was a kid back in the 50s, my parents would take us to the coast and stay in a motel very much like Deane's. No, it's not a Hyatt and isn't intended to be. It's an old-fashioned place with old-fashioned amenities and staying at Deane's brought back many fond memories.

We stayed in the unit at the far end from the office and enjoyed our 3-night stay very much. It was nice to have the adjacent room to watch TV (has a satellite service!) so that I didn't disturb my sleeping wife.

I also enjoyed reading the morning paper in the office while having free pastries and coffee and talking with the owner.

My family stayed at this wonderful motel for one night in July on our trip up the coast after a family picnic. If you are looking for a fancy resort, this place isn't for you. This motel offers clean and comfortable rooms at a reasonable rate. The expansive grassy area offered a worry free play area for our 3 year old son, and the easy beach access could not be any more convenient. My mother who has mobility issues, appreciated being able to watch the ocean from a bench (on a cliff overlooking the ocean) from the motel property. We had an excellent dinner in town, and couldn't be more pleased to find such a gem of a motel.

The lodge sits on the ocean side of Hwy 101. I'm thinking these units used to be a drive-in type of hotel back in the 60's,maybe. There are around 13 units. Half of these are pet friendly. We stayed in one that pets aren't allowed in. Rooms are very clean and large. Bathroom is shower only, but it is big. All units have a back door which goes out to about 1/2 acre of grass before you get to the ocean, which is down a flight of stairs. There is a horseshoe pit and volleyball could easily be played on the grass. We did see one bbq and several picnic tables. This would be an awesome place for a family reunion! We will return again and advise all to give it a go!

Hi,
Thanks for the nice review. You definately get the gold star for observations! This was a drive up style lodge in the 50's. You can see some of the painted numbers still on the concrete on the the west patio. No kidding they used to park the cars on the west side and blocked the view!
We've worked very hard to update all of the rooms with the modern convieniences but retain the look and feel of simpler times. I have to give all of the style credits to Katherine, I just made a lot of sawdust and cleaned grout! It is fun to look at the newspaper articles in the scrapbook, evidently our rooms which are modest by today's standards were the talk of the town back then.
Thanks and hope to see you soon.
Glen and Katherine

We live on the Oregon Coast, and we were in need of a quiet anniversary getaway. We had plenty of options, as we live in proximity. We choose Dean's for its' relaxing atmosphere, refurbished rooms, and easy beach access. The owners, whom we met for the first time, were accomidating and genuine. This place has a quaint atmosphere, and a warm feeling to its' rooms. Slept like a baby.

Hi Terry, Thanks for the nice review! We are really happy that you chose to stay with us on your anniversary after stopping in to check us out. Also this is our first review from someone who has asked us to be their facebook friend. Facebook looks like it will be a great way to let our regulars know of special deals during the offseason.

Thanks,
Glen and Katherine.

Stayed in room 2 and room not as shown on website. The bathrrom, not mentioned in ad, had several problems attached to it. Heater in it did not work or have instructions to it to show how it worked. There was no place in shower tgo hold your shampoo, etc.. The mirror is too low for a tall person to use; also hit my head on glass shelf bending down to spit toothpaste. There should be a mirror outside the bathroom so another person can do make-up or whatever while another showers, uses sink or toilet. IN the bedroom portion, there is no table or comparable to write on. At least one person has to lay/sit on the bed to watch TV. And there were only 2 hangers!
Lastly, a suggestion that they have private areas for each room so people can't walk by your window and look in so easily. What good is an ocean view if you can't have your curtains open to see it. I think you can surmise we will not stay there again.

We regret that you did not enjoy your stay at Deane's and that it did not meet your expectations. The fact that you felt the rooms were not as advertised is especially troubling. We've taken great pains to ensure that all photos, and descriptions of the rooms, represent the rooms accurately. It's very important to us that our guest feel they are getting what they expected - or better! The very room you stayed in is featured on our website and shows the same quilt, decorations, layout, etc. Deane's was built in 1947 and as such is not a modern hotel. We've updated it with modern amenities - mini-fridge, microwave, cable TV WiFi etc. At the same time we haven't changed things like the building layout, real wood paneling or original glass block tiles and fixtures. Many people love the quaint, old fashioned charm but it definitely won't be for everyone. Please feel welcome to contact me directly if you have suggestions on how we can more accurately represent the hotel for future guests.
Once again, my sincere apologies,
Katherine Aukstikalnis

Stayed here in July on a trip along the Pacific coast. I composed my entire trip -- about 10 hotels using TripAdvisor. We had an awesome trip and found so many nice hotels that I could never have discovered if not for TripAdvisor. The one that stuck out like a sore thumb was Deanes Oceanfront Lodge. This was absolutely the worst experience among all the hotels during this trip.
The hotel has a large grassy area behind it and the beach is nice though it was foggy during our 2-night stay. The room on the other hand could not be worse. We stayed in room 1, which is a suite with fireplace. Our biggest issue was the strong smell of pee in the room which we suspected came from the Sofa. I complained to the front office and helped carry the sofa out of the room and febreeze was sprayed in the room. This did not help. No room change was offered or any follow-up by the management. Next biggest issue is the bugs in the room -- flying critters, spiders etc. in the bathroom and along all windows inside the room. We killed 3 spiders in the room including 2 on our bath towels. There is a hole in the wall under the sink where the spiders seem to get in. How can the cleaning person miss 50-100 flying insects all along the windows and in the bathroom?
There were other minor issues that I would normally ignore but given the bad experience we were having, these only served to emphasize that the big issues were not just a one-off but signaled deeper problems. The room is supposed to be newly renovated but feels really old except for the TV. The towels were worn. The shampoo is provided in small plastic baggies instead of small plastic bottles used everywhere else. At check-in, we were told to connect our laptop to the “Linksys” network rather than the “Deanes Lodge” network. We were told the Deanes lodge network is password protected (no password was offered). Turned out that the Linksys network was very slow so we tried the Deanes lodge network. There were 2 with similar sounding names and we connected to one without a password and the speed was fine. Still, I do not understand why we were asked not to use this network.
Overall, we stayed in several fabulous family owned and operated hotels and motels during our vacation. Deanes Oceanfront Lodge scored at the bottom and was a very unpleasant experience for us.

Hello. My wife and I are the owners of Deane's. Please let me start by saying that we deeply regret that you had an unpleasant stay at our motel. We have so much pride in our little motel. The last thing we want to hear is that someone was unhappy with their stay. After reading your review we realize that we need to improve our communication as there were clearly some missed opportunities during your visit.

We remember your stay at the motel. I am the one who helped you several times during your stay. You began your stay by inspecting the room prior to checking in and declared it was satisfactory. On the second night of your stay you raised the issue of an odor in the room. At the time you said that you believed the odor was coming from the sofa and that you had only noticed it after starting a fire in the fireplace and heating up the room to a high temperature. I immediately removed the sofa and offered to replace it with another sofa or move you to another room. You then assured me everything was fine. I requested that you please let us know if there was anything else we could do. The next morning your wife was very friendly and said you all had a great stay. Somehow we must have missed clues of your unhappiness. Truly, if we had realized of your unhappiness we would have worked to find a remedy. By the way, we later determined that the odor was from a type of compressed fire log in the fireplace. We no longer use those fire logs. We do regret that we hadn't prevented this prior to your stay.

The issue with the WiFi is also one of communication. We have 3 repeaters on site to ensure that all 15 rooms have strong signals. We had purposely directed you to the repeater with the best signal for your room. Again, it appears to be a case where our communication should have been better. Your complaint of bugs in the room is something we will have to think about. We haven't had an issue with bugs to date and can't imagine how you got so many bugs in your room. However, if you had bugs in your room, we apologize as this isn't acceptable! This can be almost impossible to prevent if doors are left open to the outside. We haven't had an issue with this, other than your stay, and so it's difficult to address. However, we do believe that even one guest finding bugs in their room isn't tolerable.

All of that being said, I do feel terrible that you had such an unpleasant stay. I wish you would told me of your unhappiness during your stay. The last thing that I want is for someone to stay at our place and have a bad experience. We will continue to work on improving our communication skills to better adapt to all types of guests. We pride ourselves on having a charming motel that is clean and welcoming and regret that you didn't find it so.

While working on a project in the Yachacts area, we were lucky to find such a wonderful place to stay. Needing rooms for a week at a time, having a place where they really care about how you are doing, and providing such wonderful service truly means alot. Our guys like to BBQ instead of eating out and the wonderful people at Deane's went out and bought Brand New BBQ's for us to use! Even though we were on business, the location of the hotel still lures you to the beach for an unbelievable view, and literally at your backdoor beach. If you like neat clean rooms, charm, a friendly staff and sleeping with the sound of the ocean around you, then you can not do any better than Deane's. This is one of those places you want everyone to know about, yet want to keep it a secret for yourself! You won't be sorry!
