“Overleaf Lodge is a great value and spectacular location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2008

We have stayed at the Overleaf twice, two nights in August, 2006 and two nights in June, 2007 and were very happy both times. The view can't be beat and in 2006 we were able to see a gray whale swim up and down the coast right in front of the hotel, very close in. The ocean crashes dramatically into the rocky beach and it is mesmerizing to watch. Pretty good tide-pooling on the rocks after high tide. Great path for walking north a ways. Breakfast was great all four mornings, with delicious quiche, very fresh and yummy quick breads, fruit, great coffee and a nice area in the lobby to enjoy it. Rooms all face the ocean and we like staying on the second or third level for a better view. Balcony is a great place to watch the waves crash in while sipping wine. Many rooms have fireplaces, which is nice on cool evenings. In-room coffee is their own blend and is delicious. Microwave and fridge are convenient also. Love the bathroom decorations with the sea-inspired tiles. Rooms comfortable and spacious. Service was good, friendly but not intrusive. Yachats is a cute little town along the central coast and the Overleaf makes a great base to stay while exploring the beautiful Oregon coast. Would love to come for a big winter storm, hopefully, some day.

This has been a favorite place of ours since it was built. We celebrated several New Years Eves there with the other guests and staff. There is no friendlier staff, better view of the Pacific, or breakfast anywhere. One of the finest galleries is right across the street - Earthworks. You'll be glad you stayed here and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg!

  • Liked — Spacious and comfortable rooms with all amenities - friendly staff
  • Disliked — Too far from home!!

This hotel is right at the edge of the ocean. The view from the hotel is beautiful. It was a very pleasant place to stay and had a great complimentary breakfast that was very complete from cereal to hot food. The rooms were dated but clean. Wasn't able to enjoy the spa as we only stayed there 1 night.

We booked two nights at the Overleaf for a quick and much needed get away. We were looking for a peaceful and relaxing time before our new baby arrives. The hotel, itself is very nice although quite commercial. The rooms are comfortable and clean. However, our first night we went to sleep around midnight and I was jolted out of bed at 2:30 in the morning by an extremely loud horn-like noise which continued throughout the night. We finally determined that the seal on the sliding glass door in our room was faulty and would whistle if the wind hit it just right. I called the front desk to figure out a remedy and the Overleaf does not keep staff on duty through the night. I reached a voicemail that stated I should call 911 if there was an emergency. Since this was not an emergency, we were left to sit up all night long (unable to sleep due to the excess noise) and wait for management to arrive at 9am the next morning.

When we presented our problem to management he offered to discount our room 20%. We argued that we did not sleep past 2:30 because of the noise which sounded like someone was playing a kazoo at the foot of the bed all night long. The manager became argumentative and ended up hanging up on us.

We will not be returning to Overleaf because of the attitude of management. Which is really too bad. We SO wanted to like this place. The rooms were nice, the staff friendly and helpful, but the management was awful and hostile.

My suggestion is that if you want a relaxing stay at the coast to get away for a couple of nights, try Wild Spring in Port Orford. Excellent rooms, excellent service, quiet and serene with a beautiful view of the ocean.

  • Liked — The ocean view
  • Disliked — The management and loud noise which lasted all night long keeping us awake from 2:30 on.

Packer-Drew, Owner at Overleaf Lodge & Spa, responded to this review, 25 January 2008
We, at the Overleaf Lodge, make every attempt to provide exceptional service in our superior facility. Upon rare occasion we fall short of these goals. When we do fall short we do everything within our ability to turn the short coming into a positive experience which is exactly what we attempted to do related to the above situation. The following facts support our attempt to please this guest:

1) There is direct access to our Manager at any time outside of our normal operating hours. In the night hours when the hotel operator is called the guest hears the following message: “..........in case of emergency, please dial 911 or contact the manager at the following number..............” Our manager promptly takes care of the problem and can easily move guests to another room if needed.

2) Our General Manager credited this guest back the entire room charge, not just the 20% discount that the guest misrepresented.

3) We have been unable to re-create the horn-like noise referenced by the guest. We are located on a headland on the Oregon Coast and so are subject to high winds at times. We have had stormy nights this winter so perhaps the wind created this noise. This occasionally happens. As mentioned above, we easily accommodate room moves when requested.

My daughter and I stayed at the Overleaf for two nights for her birthday celebration this year and it was wonderful. We had a ground floor whale watcher that opened right up to the rocks and ocean.

The staff were wonderful, from check in to the girls in the spa they were friendly and helpful. The spa girls actually made our dinner reservations (at the Yachats River House which was also amazing!) for us while we were enjoying our time in the steam room and sauna and the soaking tub after I mentioned that I still needed to call the restaurant.

The spa is fabulous, I could live in the steam room and the massage was wonderful. The girls were amazing.

The continental breakfast was delicious and filling as well. I recommend the granola! They offered two hot choices, 3 cereals (including the granola) hard boiled eggs, english muffins, and wonderful fresh fruit. Ripe pineapple in December was a treat!

Our room had two queens and a seating area and a convenience fridge. And the view! Amazing! We were ready to move in. We have a new birthday tradition!

We stayed here for only one night but wished it could have been much longer. We were traveling from Seattle to San Francisco and had heard good things about Overleaf. And they all proved to be true.

Our room was spacious, well-appointed, comfortable and oh that view!!! Staff was friendly and accomodating. We also took advantage of the complimentary guest laundry----a nice perk on a two week road trip. We also found the breakfast to be more than adequate and very nicely presented.

We would highly recommend the Overleaf and hope to stay there in the future.

We stayed at Overleaf for 3 nights, and enjoyed every minute at this hotel and exploring the area.

Our room was super clean and comfortable. We enjoyed sitting on our balcony watching the wild pacific or a magnificant sunset. At night, we kept our door open a little so we could fall asleep to the sound of the surf. Our own jacuzzi tub faced windows for a soak by the sea, and it was the best jacuzzi tub I have ever used as of yet; very hot water, great jets, and very deep.

There is a nice paved trail that begins in front of the hotel for a seaside walk.

We did not have the opportunity to take advantage of the spa; maybe next time.

For breakfast and dinner, we walked or drove to the Adobe next door, and enjoyed their gourmet food.

We enjoyed the magnificant coastal scenery, a hike and tour at the Heceta Head Lighthouse, and a day at the Oregon Dunes NRA.

We will be back!
