“First Time Guest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2013

We spent four nights at the Overleaf. The views were spectacular, the staff was very friendly and accommodating, and the breakfast was way above what you would expect. Our room was on the top floor. Only complaint was that the place could use some sprucing up in the way of painting and patching the exterior, but it was a memorable vacation. The only disappointment was the weather. It was cloudy, but refreshingly cool. We plan on returning.

We stayed here (mercifully) for only one night. The place is basically a cheap motel with a beautiful location. The windows of our room looked right out onto the ocean and the view was gorgeous. Everything else about this place was terribly disappointing, though. The carpet in the hallways and our room was filthy, the furnishings cheap and shop-worn (for example, white plastic k-mart style chairs on the porch). There was no screen on the door to our patio and the lock was broken on the slider (so a length of white plastic pipe had been thoughtfully provided by management to keep it secured). The room fridge whirred loudly every time it kicked on (about every 15 minutes). The construction is cheap: when the people in the room above us walked across their room, it sounded like a herd of elephants was trotting around. Everything needed a good scrub, if not a re-paint, and felt generally grimy. Sure, the bathroom had "Aveda" toiletries -- but sticking upscale toiletries into a grubby motel room doesn't make it a "lodge and resort" by any stretch of the imagination.
The low point came about 10pm at night when we turned down the blankets of one of the room's two queen beds for our daughter. The sheets were sandy and they clearly had not been changed between guests. We called reception and they sent up the general maintenance guy to change them for us (I suppose they had no-one from housekeeping around at that hour). This is the same guy who I had seen earlier schlepping two huge bags of garbage to the hotel dumpster. After he had changed the sheets, he made to leave. I asked "Aren't you going to change the pillowcases for us?" He said, "Oh, you want those changed too?" I explained that I had not paid $200 for the privilege of sleeping on pillowcases that another guest had used. He went off and fetched new pillowcases for us.
The only reason I am not giving this place one star is because the receptionist at check-out in the morning was properly apologetic when I explained to her what had happened. She immediately reduced our rate from $200 to $90 and said she would be sure to talk to housekeeping. I almost considered not writing this review because of her responsiveness. However, I would have given this place two stars even without the sheet incident. Given that I really think that the property misrepresents itself on its web-site (i.e. there isn't anything "luxurious" about it) I decided to be honest about my experience.

My husband and I were on a week's quick trip through Oregon. Having spent several days in the mountains we also wanted to experience Oregon's majestic coast. We booked one night at the Overleaf Lodge and Spa.
The room was not quiet ready for us upon our arrival so we took advantage of the path way for the Pacific Rim trail that runs along the coast just steps from the hotel. The grounds are very clean, fresh blooming plants accent the property in a lovely fashion.
There is a public sitting area which is part breakfast room/ part lobby. There was complimentary water and fresh banana bread. Finally we were ready for check in.
Our room was large consisting of a king bed, TV, small sitting area, a small bar area with room refrigerator, nice sized bathroom with double sinks outside of the shower/ toilet area and a small balcony. The room was very clean. There is no AC so keeping the screen door open in the summer, even though it was rainy and cool out, was necessary for comfortable sleeping.
We did not use the spa facilities. The indoor soaking pool was located just down the hall from our room--this did make for a good bit of humidity in the hall near our room--with the familiar smell of an indoor pool and chlorine.
As Yachats is a very small community there are not many dinning choices available---for almost 50 dollars, I bought a bottle of wine, a coke and a cheese platter out of the hotel's pantry. This was lunch.
For supper we ate a Luna Sea's Seafood restaurant which is maybe a half mile from the hotel. This is both a seafood market and small cafe with about 8 tables. It was full of locals and was not bad---given the lack of places to eat in Yachats, it had to do.
The best part of staying at the Overleaf hotel for us was the ability to watch whales and sea lions in the surf off the very rocky coast. The coastline here is pretty amazing...the trail accents one's visit to the area nicely. Our next stop was up at Cannon Beach. If I had to do it over, I would probably have bypassed Yachats and spent two nights up at Cannon Beach---there is much more to the town at Cannon Beach vs Yachats.

Room Tip: a balcony is a must

Our third floor room complete with fire place overlooked the pounding surf. The room was great, the view was great, but what made this place more special was the attention to detail and little things. For example: free laundry and soap for guests, windshield washer bucket and squeegee in driveway for your car, free coffee, extra towels, oh and did I mention the view!

Room Tip: Higher is better. Get the second or third floor.

To just say this location is Excellent wouldn't be enough. It far exceeds this rating system. Very few places have such a high level of relaxation, comfort, knowledge, quality and customer service. They truly go the extra mile to make your stay wonderful. The staff is very knowledgeable and accommodating. When I called with questions about each room type and the rooms that would be available for our specific dates, she explained with great detail exactly what we could expect. She was spot on. We stayed in the Restless Waters king, whirlpool on the south side and it was beyond amazing. The cool breezes, the style, spaciousness and comfort of the room created an atmosphere of relaxation beyond compare. Rooms are large, well appointed, clean with a walk in closet, spacious dressing/bath area, and a small kitchenette. The balcony was quaint and a perfect place to sit surrounded by beautiful gardens and crashing waves. The whirlpool tub was spectacular sitting high up in the picture window with a perfect view of the fireplace and the waves. This lodge takes part in conservation programs and well as provides a tasty and gourmet breakfast. The homemade granola was the best I've ever had and you can't beat the beautiful ocean views and the crashing waves. The spa was quiet, calm and the services provided were varied and well worth the time and price. Request Bri, she is so thoughtful and well educated on skin care and massage technique. This lodge is romantic and meant more for couples, but would work for families with children as well. There are paths and spots of walk out on the rocky shoreline. There is abundant wildlife and the grounds are full of flowering shrubs, beautiful smooth stones and is very well kept. All of the food places in this little quiet town are great. Ona for upscale dining, The Drift Inn if you want to blend in like a local with great music and eclectic choices. Lunasea for fresh, reasonably priced fish and quaint seating. The little general store in town is filled with fantastic gifts and Stacy is filled with lots of knowledge about the area and helpful hints.

Room Tip: All the rooms are spectacular. Call the hotel and explain to them what travel experience you're...

Based on your thoughtful review, it really looks like you not only enjoyed the full experience of the Overleaf Lodge & Spa; you also enjoyed some of the things Yachats has to offer, including the spectacular natural beauty we are surrounded by. We are all so genuinely happy that you had such a fulfilling, relaxed stay with us. Whenever you find yourself in need of another trip to the beautiful Oregon coast, just give us a call. By the way, I especially enjoyed the photo you took from your balcony at night.

I had hoped Overleaf would be a highlight of my Oregon visit and the property lived up in every way. We booked a Restless Waters room and had magnificent views and a deep jacuzzi tub which we used every night. On a blustering day, the fireplace also casts a beautiful glow in the room.

Breakfast was delicious, fresh, and lovingly prepared. Fresh croissant and scrambled eggs; a new dish each morning. English muffins, Fresh fruits, blueberry and lemon scones, juices, granola, endless coffee and tea. Wonderful. Coffee and tea are available to take on your walks from 8am to 10pm. Very lovely touch.

The artwork and sculpture in the lobby, the beautifully prepared grounds, the kind staff, make this stay such quiet bliss. Long walks on the trail from the property in search of tidal pools and endless, serene stretches of beach. Wonderful. A spa at your doorstep as well.

Overleaf rooms are well-appointed but not high end luxury. The microwave, fridge, and coffeemaker were prefect. Linens and towels, plus AVEDA products were all fine quality. It isn't five star indulgence but rather authentic, extremely clean, and comfortable with quality touches throughout. If you want endless activities and buzz, this isn't the place. I met people who return every year, and I can see why. This place is special.

Yachats is a friendly and welcoming small town and we found much to explore beyond it. Central to northern or southern coast exploration and day trips. Loved every minute of this stay.

Room Tip: All suites have fine water views. If you love a great jacuzzi, splurge on Sunset suite or Restless W...

I have been going to the Overleaf since it was brand new, perhaps 75 times. It has, without a doubt the best breakfast of any motel I've ever been in. The choices are excellent, all of the food is of the highest quality and freshly made, including fresh squeezed orange juice and some of the best stone cut oatmeal with cranberries! All rooms have an ocean view on the rocky coast with a blow hole outside the window. Most rooms have balconies with the 1st floor having patios. Great place to watch storms and sunsets. The mattresses have been upgraded, they use Aveda products in the bathroom, and the spa is wonderful. The hot tub is as warm as you wish you could find most places and the larger tub that is cooler is where you sit to watch the view.
I can't recommend any where on the Oregon Coast more highly than the Overleaf. That's why we keep going back again and again.

Room Tip: If you want a view of storms and sunsets, 2nd and 3rd floors are better.

Green Features: I love having skin and hair care products that are good for my body. The showers are excellent and you have the option of having sheets washed daily.
