Owner description: Bedford County is blessed with 14 covered bridges. Built approximately 100 years ago by craftsmen who worked almost entirely by hand, these structures withstand the rain, snow and hard use of the traveling public. The county's bridges range in length from the 136 foot Herline Bridge near Manns Choice, PA to the 56 foot Palo Alto bridge south of Hyndman. Twelve spans are Burr-truss bridges, named after their designer, Theodore Burr. These bridges are held in place by a set of trusses that interact with the arch that spans the length of the bridges, creating added strength. A lot of people ask, "Why did they cover the bridges?". One answer is that wooden bridges with exposed superstructures can rot ... covering and roofing them protects them from the weather so they'll last longer.

This was a nice tour to do while stayin in Bedford Springs. The hotel we stayed at charged $85 for the tour. We looked up the tour online, printed out the driving directions and did it ourselves for free. Beautiful photo ops.

Really fun to do the covered bridges with the kids. Bedford Springs concierge gave us a really great map that was better than what we could find online. Great places for photos. Be careful if you walk in the stream by Kniseley Covered Bridge-I was walking along in lovely stream and my foot sunk in a hidden deep mud hole! Lost my shoe and couldn't find it again! Saw other people's shoes there, too! Glad I'm not the only one wandering around the loop with only one shoe. LOL

A side trip while on business in Bethleham, PA was the covered bridges. We were able to see all but one. the road to it was blocked, but in working our way around we enjoyed this beautiful part of the state. We were impressed with the evident pride the locals take in keeping their roadways and lawns in good condition. The bridges are a part of American history and are well preserved and protected. Thanks PA.

We found the brochure map difficult to follow and got lost several times. The bridges were nice, most you can drive across. They are all of the same style. That said, if you want to see great covered bridges, go to Park County Indiana. Their driving tour is second to none.

The covered bridges were wonderful. We visited Cuppetts and Colvins covered bridges. It was nice being able to walk on the bridges (even Cuppetts which was in bad condition and needed repairs)
