The Historic Lincoln Highway
Ranked #4 of 17 things to do in Bedford

just a country road. tourist sights are few & very far between. your tax dollars wasted (and then some) on the old coffee pot (hotel) now moved to Bedford Fairgrounds. Ship hotel at "grandview" was burnt by arson & its former sight is interesting but nothing I'd drive more than 100 feet to see. Most of road is tedious to drive.

Hills are intense between Breezewood and Chambersburg but interesting drive if you have the time. Took the turnpike back

It is the anniversary of the Historic Lincoln highway and we it a point to travel on it and learn something about it and it's importance in the development of our country. It was the forerunner of the modern super highway but opened up our country to interstate travel and sparked many businesses and a new of thinking about cars. Hard to believe how far we have come!

You end up on historic Route 30/Lincoln Highway as part of other exploration types of activities... very scenic road, not a whole lot of shopping, but some cute shops along the way.

We decided to take the scenic route instead of the Turnpike from Pittsburgh to Gettysberg. Big mistake. The positives: Ft. Ligonier and the Flight 93 Memorial.

The rest was a ride I NEVER want to repeat! East of the Flight 93 Mem we entered either a fog bank or a cloud field. Combine a 2 lane road (definitely not a highway) with zero visibility and you have a ride of terror - about 100 miles of terror! Never saw a car on the road going east or west - probably a good thing since we had to stare directly down at the road to drive through this. We'd a have a few minutes of clearing and relief but those minutes were in the middle of nowhere so we couldn't stop to relax and maybe wait it out. We couldn't even see the side of the road. If there were signs to tell us of a road to get us to the Turnpike we never saw it - we could only stare ahead and pray.

If you decide to take this route, pray hard for a sunny day!
