“A gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 November 2013

We had dinner at the Bird's Nest on a Saturday night in early November. Quaint little place, great atmosphere inside and out. Sourdough bread with honey butter was a great way to start! We waited a little long for our meals, but sometimes, it's good to just sit and talk and wait a bit! Slow down, America! I had the Portobello mushroom entrée -- stuffed with spinach leaves and homemade bread crumbs -- OH MY WORD -- it was fabulous. The potatoes and green beans were the perfect go-withs. My husband had the grilled haddock, which was also quite good. His chocolate cake had peanut butter icing on it, and he left the icing, as he's not an icing fan, so be advised. My Beesting cake (yes, that's what they call it!) was interesting: a rather coarse-textured vanilla cake infused with rum, pudding in the center, fresh whipped cream, drizzled with honey (local, of course). A nice mix of flavors (with nothing left on my plate!). Good service, obviously qualified and dedicated chef. (And when I left my cell phone there by mistake and called it to try to find it, the chef/owner answered it and told me where I'd dropped it! Great small-town service!)

“Worth the stop”

Jump off the turnpike to grab lunch at this quaint cafe. Our sandwiches were tasty, the service quick, and dessert delicious.

“A Cozy Nest”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2013

Nestled in downtown Bedford, PA the Bird's Nest Cafe is a comfortable, casual spot for lunch or dinner. The exterior was decorated with seasonal cornstalks, pumpkins and mums - very welcoming. Although the day I visited, weather did not allow for outdoor dining, but tables were set up, so that might be available on good days.

The menu was heavy on soups, salads and sandwiches. Everything our party had was very good. There is a bakery next door, and the desserts served from there were also quite tasty. Prices are reasonable, waitstaff friendly and service prompt.

Avoid the turnpike food and get off at the Bedford exit. The town has some nice shops, and the food is far better than rest stop meals.

“Nice local cafe close to Bedford exit on PA Turnpike”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2013 via mobile

We stopped at the Bird's Nest traveling from State College to DC. It is a very cute spot. We found parking at the lot across the street. Service was very nice but slow. The lunch menu was limited to soups (home made and very good) and sandwiches. I had the chicken and pepper sandwich special, and it was ok, but very dry. I took mayo from my hubby's BLT to make it edible. Better than a chain, but not outstanding.

“Good food, good service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2013

We found the Bird's Nest during a recent road trip and usually try to avoid chains and look for quaint places that the locals go to. The Bird's Nest fit the bill perfectly. We arrived just after noon and got the last table. The 2 waitresses were very busy but efficient and promptly took our order. The food was somewhat slow in coming but was very tasty and worth waiting for. It was just like home cooking. They also have a selection of local produce and we picked up some honey. Well worth the little extra time off the highway.
