Owner description: The Elk Country Visitor Center is a premier location for viewing elk and other wildlife in Pennsylvania. The center offers interactive exhibits and displays and encourages a 'hands on' experience. Our 4D story theater immerses guest in the history of Pennsylvania elk and the Pennsylvania Wilds. Our gift shop sell Made in the USA product, many of those by local artisans and product makers. The best time to view is early in the morning or in the hours before dark. Elk are wild animals and you can't be promised you will see them.

“It's okay but you have a better chance of seeing elk away from the park”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Actually saw elk along the river in Benezette, PA. But as with any wild animal based attraction there are no guarantees. But the web site makes it sound as if there are always elk to be seen. But even at dawn and dusk you may or may not see any elk. Visitors center is ok but geared towards children. Gift shop is small and expensive compared to what we have seen in other states.

Highly recommend visiting the Visitor Center. Lots of stuffed animals and an interesting movie in an IMAX type theater.
Gift shop with lots of choices for take home mementoes.
No restaurant here but spotless restrooms.

“Elk Viewing”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

Very nice visitor center. The people who work there are very informative and friendly. The store has nice and interesting things to buy, at reasonable prices. The wagon ride was great! We got to see a baby out in the field and the mother calling it. They all make you feel at home!

Parking is limited during busy times of the year, and will give you some exercise getting from lot to the exhibit area.

Staff is friendly.

Gift shop, as with all such facilities is rather expensive.

“Plenty of Elk in June”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

We visited the Elk Country Visitor Center two consecutive nights in June, not really expecting to see elk on either occasion as they generally head towards higher elevation in the warmer months. To increased our odds of seeing elk, we waited for a cold front to move through the area, bringing cooler temperatures, and then waited till the evening as elk tend to be most active at dawn (too early in June) and dusk. The first night we were delayed and arrived with only about 15 minutes before closing at 8pm so we were very happy to see about 6 to 8 elk. With the weather still cool and overcast the next evening, we decided to try again, making sure to arrive with plenty of time. The elk center has three viewing areas that are screened by trees to allow observers to get reasonably close without startling the elk, each connected to the visitor center by a path through the woods that takes only 5 to 10 minutes to walk the length. When we first arrived the second evening, there were a few elk grazing between the two observation areas out the back of the visitor center, eventually, more gathered and concentrated towards the observation area out the back and to the right so we headed there. Eventually, 25 elk gathered in the field right in front of us including a young bull elk no more than 10 yards (9.1m) away! It was a thrill for all; with this many elk on a summer’s evening, it must be truly amazing on a September evening during the rut. In addition to the elk viewing, the visitor center offers horse drawn wagon rides along a path into the field most days, closed circuit monitors for viewing, some exhibits on elk and the other wildlife of the Pennsylvania Wilds, and a gift shop with many elk related items. One work of caution, if you are arriving from the west, there are large brown signs along the route directing one to the Elk Country Visitor Center until the last turn in the town of Benezett; for some reason there is not one here, only a small blue elk viewing sign pointing to the left. If you happen to miss it as we did the first time, it will become obvious as you pass through town. Simply turn around and, now approaching from the east, there will be a large brown sign directing you to the right. Elk are amazing, beautiful animals and the opportunity to see so many so close is a special experience; we wish you luck and hope your visit is as fortunate as ours were.
