Pluses: Quiet room in springhouse with beautiful view into field, gas fireplace, location, friendly staff
We were not wowed by: the bathroom (not in any photos for a reason), bathroom products (went out and bought our own), hard and bouncy bed, draft coming through front door, no room darkening curtains, breakfast, age of materials in room, no welcome by owners. Overall, glad we were off season as it would have been disappointing to have paid more for this weekend.

Room Tip: probably not in main house because of road noise

Innkeeper506, Owner at Fairville Inn Bed and Breakfast, responded to this reviewResponded 20 March 2012

As innkeepers, we’re not really sure how to respond to this comment. First, the comment heading says the Inn is not “luxurious.” We are a country bed and breakfast inn and make no pretentions about being luxurious (although we and almost all of our guests consider our accommodations to be quite elegant). We really don’t know what these guests mean when they say they were not “wowed” about aspects of the Inn.

Each of our bathrooms is modern and spotlessly clean, and guests often ask us where they can find our bathroom amenities. (If your traveling needs include an oversized bathroom, a bed and breakfast may not be your best choice.)

It is true that there are no “room darkening” curtains in our rooms – and not a single guest has complained in the past (we’re in the country, not in the city – but we admit that the full moon can be a bit bright).

We waited a while before posting this reply so we could ask other guests about the bed in this room. There were no complaints (although one guest thought the bed was a bit soft, while this comment says it was hard). As for the “age” of the materials in this room, the curtains and bedding are less than 2 years old. The comfortable upholstered easy chair shows no signs of wear and the carpeting is in excellent condition. Several guests request this room each time they stay with us, and we doubt they would do so if they found the bed uncomfortable or the furnishings uninviting.

Over the course of a year, we make and serve over 5000 breakfasts. As hard as we try, we know that sometimes a guest will be disappointed. We take great pride in the many positive comments about our breakfasts posted on this and other websites, the frequent requests we get from our guests for recipes, and that several of our recipes have appeared in local and national publications.

As much as we would like to, it is just not possible for us to welcome every guest at check-in (especially when multiple guests arrive at essentially the same time). That is why we have an excellent staff of assistant innkeepers, one of which is on duty from 8am to 9pm every day. Formal check-in lasts for 6 hours, beginning at 3pm and it is sometimes impossible for us to personally welcome every guest. We might be taking other guests to their rooms or making dining arrangements for them, or attending to inn chores (which are never ending and include baking almost every day) or to family needs (we have two teen-aged daughters with sometimes demanding schedules). One or both of us are at afternoon tea every day to meet our guests, ensure that they have suitable dinner arrangements, and to help them plan their stay. We introduce ourselves by name (not as owners or innkeepers) and sometimes are mistaken as staff (I am often mistaken to be the gardener or resident Sherpa). We are both at breakfast every morning. Laura manages the dining room, helps with the serving, and chats with guests during breakfast. I am busy cooking in the kitchen (but try to get into the dining room when I can). We live in a house that is adjacent to the Inn and are always available should the need arise.

Finally, we are puzzled how a guest who stayed in the Springhouse could include a “room tip” concerning rooms in the Main House. While Kennett Pike can be a somewhat busy road during the weekday commutes (but much less so on weekends), road noise in our Main House rooms has never been an issue. Three of the five rooms in the Main House are in the rear of the building, which is the original ca. 1826 Pennsylvania farm house constructed of thick stone and brick walls.

The owners and workers are pleasant and helpful and will even make dinner reservations for you. It would be nice to have a write up on the history of the house posted or to look at(I know it's on their website but the memory isn't that great). It would help me appreciate the property more. Our accomodations were okay. The only real nice thing was the bedspread and curtains other than that the furniture was so so as well as the bathroom and vanity. I guess we have stayed in some top notch places and then you can't help but compare. The afternoon tea was a very nice touch that we haven't experienced in other B&B's. There were cookies, fresh fruit, delicious cheeses and crackers. And we sat in front of a nice fire in a sitting room. I would have given it a 4 but for what we paid for our room I think it was overpriced.

Room Tip: If road noise bothers you I wouldn't stay in the main house. We were in the Carriage House and...

The Fairville Inn is a lovely B and B in a convenient location near the top attractions in the Brandywine Valley. It's just down the road from Winterthur, Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum (Wyeth family well represented). Rooms are comfortable and very clean. The owners try hard to please, but special requests can overwhelm them a bit, so don't take hotel expectations along.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are large and sunny.

While we greatly appreciate the nice comments this reviewer posted about the Fairville Inn, we would like to address the comment about the innkeepers being "overwhelmed" with special requests. Although we do not know what this guest requested that we were unable to provide, we are a Bed and Breakfast Inn and do not pretend to offer the 24-hour amenities provided by concierge services at 5-star hotels. But most bed and breakfast guests know and understand this. We work with guests every day to attend to their needs, including special requests. Whether a guest requests wine or champagne, special flowers, chocolate-dipped strawberries, other chocolate treats, a cheese/fruit platter, an in-room massage, restaurant reservations, a breakfast tailored to meet dietary needs, or something else -- we will do all that we can to make it happen if we have advance notice of what the guest desires.

The facility and grounds are beautiful. The staff and Innkeepers are very pleasant and very helpful. Breakfast was somewhat disappointing in that the food was nothing special.

The Fairville Inn is a wonderful b&b in the Brandywine area.

I needed to be out early in the morning, before breakfast was served, and the owner was kind enough to bring a coffee maker to my room, as well as leave cereal and milk in the kitchen. He also invited a friend (who was staying with friends) to join me the next morning for breakfast. This kind of hospitality is what makes this Inn stand out from so many others.

I did stay for the breakfast one morning and it was wonderful. The rooms are clean and cheery... A small refrigerator in the room would have been nice.

I look forward to staying at The Fairville Inn on my next trip to the Brandywine area.

Room Tip: I stayed in the Carriage House... room 4... Very cheery.

We travelled to Brandywine Valley in PA and stayed at the Fairville Inn. Our room was a suite which was lovely, extremely clean. It would be nice had there been a small refrigerator and coffee maker. The breakfast was just enough - not too much - not too little. The owners were present and very friendly. We especially like Ozzie the dog. Fairville Inn is a great place to explore the area such as Longwood Gardens, Nemours and anything DuPont.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a GPS. Getting around at night on unfamiliar roads was difficult at best - Defin...

We are repeat visitors to Fairville Inn with stays during the tenure of the last two owners. We gathered here for a weekend birthday bash coming from Pasadena CA, NYC, and the Washington DC area. We had rooms in the Main House and in the Carriage House. Each was splendid in its furnishings particularly the comfy beds. The suites in the outlying houses are ideal for small family/group sittings.
Breakfast is smashingly good and fresh including baked sweets, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, and a choice of two or three hot mains.
The owners and staff alike are gracious, helpful--delights to meet.
The reviews in the New York Times and Southern Living in their compliments to the Inn.
And it is close at hand to Longwood Gardens and several wonderful museums.
