Fairville Inn Bed and Breakfast

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 29 May 2013

We just returned from a Memorial Day trip to Brandywine. We're members of both Longwood Gardens and Winterthur and wanted to see them a little later in the season than we did at the last visit. The only decisions we had to make was where to eat dinner. There was NO decision as to where to stay: Fairville Inn! The visit two years ago was so pleasant, why would we pick anywhere else. Thankfully, Rick and Laura are still there and doing a great job of making everyone's stay so pleasant! We were lucky enough to get our favorite room; Carriage House #1. All of the Carriage House rooms have a very nice deck at the back of the building overlooking lovely gardens where we enjoyed a glass of wine each afternoon before leaving for dinner. Ozzie, Rick and Laura's beautiful and friendly dog visited us while we enjoyed our deck. Chef Rick makes a delicious breakfast every morning and Laura and her helpful staff makes sure everyone has everything they need. We stay in a B&B whenever we travel and have many experiences some great and some not so great. Would we stay at Fairville again? In a heartbeat!

Room Tip: Although the rooms in the main Inn building are closer to the breakfast room (and probably the best...

The Inn is located conveniently to many attractions. It was also adequate for our one-night stay. However, overall it was so-so. The room was rather pedestrian, though not inexpensive. Care and maintenance could have been better. The place seemed tired and not up to expected standards. Frankly, would not go back.

As hard as we work every day, we know that the occasional guest will not be pleased. For some people, a bed and breakfast inn is not the best choice. We are proud that Trip Advisor, based on the reviews of our guests, has rated the Fairville Inn #1 in the area and has honored us with its coveted Certificate of Excellence in each of the past three years. If a country elegant B&B is what you are looking for, you will not be disappointed. Rick, Owner/Innkeeper

My adult daughter and I enjoyed our recent 2 night stay at this attractive B&B in the heart of the major attractions of the Brandywine Valley. I had to choose the most expensive accommodation so that we would have 2 beds. It was #2 in the Carriage House. The main room was huge, and there was also a small room with a hide-a-bed. The bathroom and closet were also roomy. The room was clean and the kingsize bed was very comfortable. There were enough hangers, an ironing board, very nice linens and towels, 2 sinks and a separate room for the toilet and shower. The only criticism I have of the room is that the slipcovers on the loveseat and 2 chairs could be replaced. The bed, carpet, wallpaper and furniture are very nice. We especially liked the owners, who go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. They seem to work very hard and take an interest in their guests. The exterior area is nicely landscaped, and there are fresh flowers on the breakfast/tea tables. The living room is welcoming, and there are current magazines and newspapers to read.

We love to get reviews like this one! We were a bit concerned with the comment about the slip covers on the chairs and love seat since they are less than a year old. We inspected the slip covers upon reading this comment and found them in perfect condition – clean and without stains or noticeable wear. We can only surmise that these guests did not agree with our fabric selection. Such is life and we can gladly accept that kind of criticism!

We love to stay at The Fairville when Mom and Dad visit to go to Longwood Gardens! The Inn is conveniently located between Longwood Gardens and Wintertur and near Kennett Square as well. Rick and Laura the Innkeepers are welcoming and attentive....even helping us make dinner reservations. The grounds are beautiful, (my husband and I love the Carriage House, but have equally enjoyed the Main House). The Breakfast room is charming dressed in white linen and the
meal is always delicious! (thanks chef Rick). The rooms themselves are spotless and decorated tastefully with antiques and books to read. We love it and know you will too!

Room Tip: Carriage House Suite is our favorite, but Mom and Dad like first floor main house close to the break...

This is really an outstanding B+B. Beautiful home with very friendly and helpful innkeepers. Great location just minutes from Longwood Gardens and Winterthur. Breakfast and afternoon tea were top notch. The only thing preventing me from giving it 5 stars is that it is on a busy road and this does negatively impact one's ability to relax on the front porch and there would be road noise if you had your window open. If it were on a quiet street, it would be 5+ easy.

I stayed in the Springhouse at the Fairville Inn. On the postive side, the inn has a great location. It is 5 minutes from both Winterthur and Longwood Gardens. The Springhouse room had a very nice view of the back garden and a pond. The breakfast was good. Excellent fresh fruit and scrambled eggs, ample portions. On the negative side, the room was badly in need of updating. The door lock was difficult to work; the 2 chairs in the room had stained fabric; and the fabric on the canopy on the bed was stained. We had numerous stinkbugs in the room because the screen on the sliding glass door was ripped. We also could hear conversations from the room below us. The walls were very thin. The room was a good size and the bathroom was ok. Overall, a disappointing experience. Would not recommend for a romantic getaway.

We debated about whether to respond to this review. We certainly appreciate the nice comments about the view and breakfast. We do, however, strongly disagree with the characterization of the room as “tired.” While we expect our guests to treat our rooms as they would their home, that does not always happen. The prior guests in this room spilled something greasy on the chairs and somehow got an eye-level stain (chocolate?) about the size of a quarter on one of the corner curtains of the canopy of the bed. Our housekeeping staff worked very hard on the chair stains – and was able to minimize their size and severity before the reviewing guests checked in. We have been unable to completely remove the stains and will have to re-upholster both chairs. We could not deal with the curtain stain at that time because the curtain had to be laundered and could not be re-hung before check-in. The curtain was laundered after the reviewing guests checked out, and the stain is gone. As for the stinkbugs (our only real nemesis from nature), they get in our rooms when guests go out on their decks and do not close either the glass door or the sliding screen door. We look for them every day in our rooms, but they are industrious critters adept at finding hiding places. They are an annoyance, but they do not sting or bite. It is true that there are two very small “slit” rips in the screen door to this room (they have since been repaired). They were, however, too small to admit all but the most determined of stinkbugs. (Look up “stinkbugs” on the Internet – it’s a fascinating story.)

We stayed in the Carriage House 1 Room and it was beautiful. It contained a very comfortable king bed, sofa, two sitting chais, a gas fireplace, a desk area with chair, and a very nice large patio that looked out on the grounds. The bathroom was spacious and both the room and bathroom were well appointed. The staff was very friendly and helpful in terms of directions and area attractions. Although we did not find the breakfast as good as others have reported in their reviews, it held us over until lunch, and the coffee was good. Although the price is a little steep, we did find this an excellent place to stay while visiting the area.
