“Lovely stay and great location”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

Let me start by saying that we are not really fans of most bed and breakfast places. The Fairville in was a nice surprise. The welcome we received was warm and the room was spacious and nicely decorated. We mostly had the upstairs to ourselves so it was quiet. The location was very close to all we wanted to see and the breakfast was delicious.

The only downside was a slight musty, mildew smell that is likely due to the age of the main building.

Overall a very nice visit and we are very likely to stay here again.

The room itself was very clean and comfortable, however, there was a very damp, musty (mildew) smell inside. My porch, albeit nice for sitting with glass of wine, had lots of mildew, paint chips and old grass clippings. The lawn hadn't been mowed and the shrubs and landscaping throughout the property looked in need of some TLC. (xmas lights literally hanging off a pine tree as you pull into the driveway!) Some fresh mulch and flowers would make it so beautiful. Perhaps a nice fire pit outback with adarondak chairs would be a nice addition....the owner and servers were friendly, as was the Inn dog. (he gave a good recommendation for dinner) The breakfasts were OK, and served in a very charming setting. Getting some ice was not easy, especially at night. you have to go up to the inn and hope someone is available to give you a very small bucket from the kitchen. An ice machine in a covered area outside would seem more practical. For the money I spent on a 2-night minimum stay, I would not stay here again.

Please forgive the long response, but I feel it necessary to address the comments in this guest’s review. It would have been nice if this guest had approached us to talk about the comments rather than waiting to post them on the Internet. Except for the comments about the X-Mas lights and ice (which I will address at the end), this guest’s comments are essentially about Mother Nature.

This past winter was rather wicked. We endured snowfall/storms almost every week, 2 ice storms, and several consecutive nights of sub-zero temperatures. In the spring it became apparent that we lost a number of perennials and shrubs, while others showed damage. We also lost a 25’ Southern Magnolia and suspect we will lose an 85’ Linden tree. We have been working with professional arborists and horticulturists, and we are following their advice. Some of the plants may look a bit ragged, but we are caring for them and hoping most will recover.

We don’t understand the comment about flowers and mulch. As we do every year, our gardens were mulched in early spring. Although not as meticulously manicured as Longwood or Winterthur, our gardens are designed to have a shifting display of blooms from early spring through late fall. Mother Nature sometimes interrupts the schedule. Following the forsythia, our daffodils (several hundred), tulips, irises, viburnum, azaleas, rhododendron, American dogwood, weeping cherry and peonies all bloomed pretty much on schedule. As I write this, the Asiatic dogwood and early daylilies are in full bloom, as are the calla lilies, floribunda roses, climbing hydrangea, honey suckle and spider wort (I hate that name for such a pretty flower). They will be followed by more daylilies, an assortment of classic lilies, gladiolas, several hydrangea species, and other shrubs, perennials, ornamental grass plumes, hostas, chrysanthemums, etc.

As to mowing the lawns (almost 5 acres), we are scheduled to be mowed every Thursday. It is bad horticultural practice to mow in the rain, just after rain, or just before rain is likely. To do so promotes lawn disease. This has been a very rainy spring, and we have had to delay mowing several times. We would much rather have taller grass for a few days than risk unhealthy lawns.

As for the comment about the room being “musty,” all we can say is that this room was occupied 29 of the 31 days prior to this guest’s stay, and 18 of the 19 days after she stayed (as of this writing). Since none of the other guests have raised this issue, and we and our staff have not detected anything during our daily room inspections, we suspect this guest was particularly sensitive to something in the room or that perhaps it had to do with the very high humidity we were experiencing. Had she said something to us, we would have tried to resolve the issue, including moving her to another room.

Regarding ice, it is available at the front desk until 9pm. Our ice buckets hold over 2 quarts of ice, and guests can take more than one back to a room. If a guest will be arriving (or returning from dinner) after 9pm, we are glad to put ice in their room on request.

The comment about the X-Mas tree lights made me chuckle. This is not your average “Christmas Tree” – it is about 65’ high. We have nine 75’ light strands (each in three 25’ segments). They were installed by a “bucket-truck/cherry picker,” which is very expensive to hire for even the ½ day minimum. Near the end of January, instead of taking down all the lights (and then putting them back up in November), we remove the bottom segment of each strand, and tuck the others into the tree as best we can. Most guests don’t notice the lights, but some have asked whether we do “Christmas in July” (we sometimes do).

Finally, I think it was me, not Ozzie the dog, who gave the good recommendation for dinner. But if it was Ozzie he would have recommended either Antica (and told the guests to order the boneless beef short-ribs) or Portobello’s (and suggested the steak). He knows that the servings are generous and that he will most likely get left overs for breakfast.

Best to All,

Rick

Visited this charming inn with friends, wish we had planned to stay more than one night. Lovely setting, wonderful and welcoming hosts and staff (and very friendly inn dog). Rooms were very nice and comfortable. Afternoon tea time and breakfast well done.. The setting of this property is in beautiful Brandywine Valley, lots to see and Laura was so helpful in helping us plan our visit to local attractions and restaurants. I will definitely make a return visit.

I found this wonderful, charming bed and breakfast via online research and newspaper articles about the Brandywine Valley, and I could not have been more pleased. Rick and Laura Carro are the perfect hosts. They've taken this wonderful property and made it into a charming, comfortable, romantic, and beautiful inn, small in size because it's a B&B, but large in heart and charm. My partner and I stayed in the Springhouse, which was beautiful with its rough hewn timbers yet comfortable bed and chairs in a colonial decorating style with a wonderful fireplace, a great king bed, great sitting chairs, a secretary, and plenty of space for two. Loved the fireplace. The porch looked out over a beautiful green meadow that glistened of dew and the day's promise. The breakfasts served in the main house were absolutely superb--a selection each day of an omelet or quiche, a pancake choice, or scrambled eggs, and I sampled them all in our three-day stay and loved them all. The room was quiet and peaceful even though the inn is located on route 52, but that location makes it central to all the beauty and attractions that the Brandywine Valley has to offer: Winterthur, Longwood Gardens, the Brandywine Art Museum (with all its Wyeth art), and so, so much more. The room and our experience were worth double what we paid. We quickly became acquainted with Ozzie, this beautiful, friendly, kind, aged, and often hungry dog who wanders the premises and yet is part of the wonderful hospitality we experienced. Rick and Laura's suggestions about local dining were spot-on. And the tea in the afternoon was perfectly timed and delicious, with Laura's mint plant providing a tasteful burst of fresh spring flavor for our tea. There were so many little wonderful touches like that, I can't describe them all. I have stayed in Ritz-Carltons and Four Seasons hotels, but my experience at the Fairville Inn exceeded those. Recommended without hesitation.

Room Tip: There are rooms in the main house which are the most convenient, but there's also the Carriage H...

Stayed here for a family gathering event and we pretty much rented the place out. Pleasant inn experience! Breakfast was great. Rooms are clean and well serviced. Grounds are taken care of nicely. Staff is friendly. Would recommend this if you are looking for an inn setting and have a group of folks to accommodate. If you are looking for incredible places to eat try Feby's for seafood and Krazy Kat for fine dining and a great meal.
