Description: The Gables at Chadds Ford is situated on land that was originally part of a 138 acre land grant from William Penn to Brinton King. Around 1745, a pre-Revolutionary style house was built on the property. This was one of the first homes to be built in Pennsbury Township. For the next 100 plus years, the property operated as a working farm and quietly became part of the Brandywine Valley’s history. The route along Route One is well known to have housed numerous stops for the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. It has been suspected that the King house may have been one of these stops. The house was renovated in the late 1800s by George C. King, son of Brinton King. He adopted the popular Victorian style by adding wrap around porches and twenty three gables. Two of the four original chimneys from the pre-Revolutionary style home are still visible. In March of 2002, the house was placed on the National Historic Register. The bank barn was built in 1897, and the farm became a traditional dairy farm until the late 1940s. The barn then reincarnated into Dario’s Dairy Bar and General Store. Dario’s featured Elsie the Borden Cow on the side of the building. By the 1960s, the site became the Country Kettle, a home-style diner many Chadds Ford residents may remember. The restaurant features the original frame, steel-framed doors and windows, and Benheim restoration glass. The banquet room is accented with a stunning wall of French windows and is crowned with an antique chandelier. The name for the restaurant was derived from the large number of gables, (gable n. the triangular upper part of an outside wall, between sloping roofs), that are featured on both the Victorian House and the restaurant.

Gables at Chadds Ford has plenty of parking around the building. The atmosphere is really nice and they offer inside and outside dining experience. The brunch was a good price at only $20 per person not including beverages. The selection wasn't really wide enough to be a brunch. It had a staple of breakfast items including made to order omelets but the lunch side of it was weak - salads, some roasted vegs and cheese platter. I would have also liked to see some scrambled eggs to pair with other things instead of getting the omelet. There were a lot of small desserts that was nice to sample. Overall a great place but a very basic brunch.

If you can deal with the noise, the food is good. Service was just OK. Took quite a while to get our meal and then the fish was cold and had to be sent back. They seemed a bit overwhelmed on a Saturday night.

My wife and I stopped for lunch while sightseeing in the Brandywine Valley. What a fantastic place. Beautiful dining room and outdoor seating. We both had great sandwiches and delicious mushroom soup. Terrific beer and wine list. Would highly recommend this establishment.

I am a CPA and my husband and I were celebrating the end of tax season yesterday (4/18/18). It was also the anniversary of our first date. Gary surprised me and took me to The Gables for appetizers and dinner. It was a wonderful evening from start to finish. Tracey warmly greeted us when we arrived and Phillip waited on us at the bar . He was attentive, informative, and even gave us a half order of the mushroom appetizer (which was awesome!). The food and drinks were delicious. Carol came over and talked to us and we enjoyed our conversation. We got the best table in the house for dinner and Michael was our server. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating, and we felt like family. I could not have been more pleased with the entire evening. Thank you to everyone who helped make it so special!

The restaurant is very nice and occupies what I believe is a converted barn, but don't get the wrong idea it's really nice. We visited on a weeknight so it was not extremely busy. The food was very good; the service was very good as well however the waiter we had was the only one working in our area. He did a great job but could have used a little help. Overall this was a good place to eat dinner.
