“Cold Bed and Breakfast?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2013

The Fern Inn is a beautiful home who's owners have kept the integrity of the time period in which it was built. I take my hat off to that. My expectation, when a place is called a Bed and Breakfast, is that I will be greeted warmly, someone will give me the ins and outs of how breakfast is served and any other rules that may apply. We wandered around each morning trying to figure out how it worked because there was never a member of the staff around. We were so frustrated by the second morning, that we left. Needless to say, there wasn't a staff member to be found. Our room was very cold due to the fact that the thermostat was downstairs. When we were shown to our room, the person even commented on cold it was and that the thermostat would be raised. It never happened. I am okay with drafty houses, but not intentionally relying on space heaters to save money. We relied on the little space heater the entire time we were there. That meant no heat in the bathroom. The restaurant is fabulous. The service and food were top notch. It appears that the focus is on the restaurant and it's patrons and not on the B & B part of the business. They were very concerned about the dining area being really warm (this was the only time the radiators went on in our room). As soon as the dining hours were over, the thermostat went down and our heat in our room went off. It was in the teens at night during our stay. We drive to Elk often to ski and stay overnight. We will never stay at this place again.

Thanks you for taking the time to write a review about your stay, I am glad you've enjoyed our restaurant and its service and food, however it looks like we were not able to deliver the level of total service that we are know for and I sincerely apologise for that.
As Innkeeper, I cannot understand how your greeting and breakfast was an utter failure. Upon arrival, I like to familiarize our guests with the Inn. The common areas should have been pointed out to you, the breakfast room is shown to guests and set ups and times of service are explained. We do indeed strive to keep the Inn as original as possible and in that respect, our main focus and efforts are to keep all of the guests rooms comfortable as possible. We have installed supplemental heaters to all rooms. As for the other issues, I have addressed them with our team to be sure all is corrected as I too find this to be unacceptable for our standards.
Thank you for staying with us and hope you will give us a chance to show you what our Inn can offer and whatt all the great reviews are about!
Sincerely,
Mary Hoehing, Innkeeper

I was overwhelmed by the building itself, the room we had, the food and especially how great the staff was. We truly felt like VIP's. Added to that we got to see the great Autumn colors all around us that we wanted to see. It was perfect!

My boyfriend and I desperately needed a getaway before the summer ended, and we happened upon this overlooked lovely find. an easy 3 hour drive from the city, without the Catskills prices. Beautiful B&B, delicious food, unparalleled sunsets, owners who make you feel like family. Our favorite was the boat house-kayaking in the lake, swimming, spotting BALD EAGLEs (yes!) and then to walk back up the hill and enjoy NYC worthy cuisine, followed by a fire pit, (a must-have of my BF) The owners are characters of the best kind-generous, sweet, and THERE FOR YOU! oh-and did I mention a King size bed (again-for us NYCers this is WHY you get away, to relax, see a million stars, sleep on a heavenly bed, and drink and eat too much (just work it off on the kayak or a hike) go there before its discovered.

Room Tip: ask for a balcony and private bathroom

My girlfriend and I stayed a few weekends ago. From the start it was a great experience...Sam & Ed (the owners) and the staff were great!
Sam took our call and was very helpful in answering all of our questions as we weren't familiar with the area at all and Ed who we met when we got there was soo friendly & personable!
On arrival everything was very smooth, we got into our room and there were delicious home baked chocolate chip cookies, yum! We then took a golf cart to tour the property and headed to the lake where there was a house to hand at, we took out a 2 person kayak and really got to relax!
Later that day we went up to the room to relax for a little before going back downstairs for dinner. The dinner was soo good...we had some special crab cake in a blossom for app, 2 different fish dishes for dinner, a really good chocolate dessert and lots of wine. The service was top notch and Ed even stopped by to see how everything was going. It was so relaxing & enjoyable to eat there onsite and hang out. After dinner we sat with some more wine around the fire pit which overlooks the grounds and the beautiful mountains.
We had to leave very early Sunday for camp visiting day but got to have the continental breakfast before leaving.
We really had an enjoyable time and look forward to come back. It wasn't all that far from NYC :)

Room Tip: The rooms with private bathrooms book quick!

Spent 3 nights at Fern Hall last weekend and loved it. The rooms are beautiful, very large and clean. The chef is fabulous, enjoyed every meal thoroughly. Had fun on the 9 hole golf course followed by a swim in the lake which was clean and glorious. The boat house has a deck that we sat on for hours in between swims off their dock. They also have a raft and kayak for enjoyment. I would highly recommend the Inn!!!

Room Tip: I prefer the rooms with private bath and there are a few to pick from which are all equally nice.

My family and I recently returned from another fabulous weekend spent at Fern Hall.
Dinner on the patio with the backdrop of Elk Mountain provided the perfect ending to our days spent swimming and golfing. Chef Donna delighted us with delicious mouthwatering meals both Friday and Saturday evenings, and a sumptuous Sunday brunch. The staff made us feel welcome and taken care of.
With access to a beautiful 9 hole golf course, crystal clear lake, boathouse with kayaks and a top notch restaurant, Fern Hall makes the perfect spot for a family reunion.
