On a whim I was looking for somewhere to stay with my wife for a couple of nights. We were in Durham and wanted something different. We found a castle!! I phoned the reception and got a deal to stay in one of the superior rooms in the lodges (in the grounds) for two nights. Unfortunately the castle was full which reminds me to book early for the next time. All accommodation is beautifully turned out and all lodge rooms have a view on to the castle itself.
This place is fabulous and it just drips with history. We absolutely adored it and will return. There are peacocks in the grounds which are beautifully manicured, hardly a blade of grass out of shape. The Castle really has the wow factor especially on the first drive up to the front door.
There are two restaurants, the main one has fabulous food which is worth the money. Try the Basil pannacotta and the ginger ice cream, my wife nearly fell off her seat; it is that good.
The service is 5*. All of the staff put themselves out for you and do it with good cheer. The lads who run the bar area and drawing room are of special mention. I suspect they would do cartwheels if you asked them.
Obviously this place is not a B & B and you pay the price accordingly but you will get the service, the food, the history and a CASTLE for gods sake. Stay here and pretend you're the Lord and Lady of the castle.

Room Tip: Stay in the castle, but book early as it gets full.

Having stayed at Langley Castle in the summer of 2013 we fell in love with the place and chose to return for our honeymoon this July 2014. The castle itself is stunning, we love the light, and the peace, the feeling of time travel. Both rooms we've stayed in - the Percy and the Cadwaller - with their four poster beds, tapestries on the wall, the old stonework, the tall windows, the alcoves that we could sit in to look out over the grounds, made this a heavenly place to wake up. The food is fabulous and flawless - sophisticated tastes and the best ingredients. We also like that the meat was sourced within walking distance of the castle. Finally the staff are down to earth in the best possible sense - personable and passionate about the castle and their work. They'd remembered us from our last visit and they always made us feel special and looked after.

Room Tip: Go for the deluxe castle or feature rooms - they cost a little more but if you like the romance of s...

Stayed a second time for our anniversary and the quality is just as good.
From the afternoon tea to the evening meal and breakfast, it was just fantastic.
Cannot pick fault with the food, rooms or staff.
What we do like is the fact the while the castle is obviously top end of the market, it is not snooty and everyone is treated the same. The staff are down to earth but professional which is how it should be.

Room Tip: sauna room is fantastic & huge

Our awe over staying in a castle may have cast an extra shiny glow on our rating, but, c'mon...it's a CASTLE.

We were greeted at the front door, no kidding, by a peacock and white pea hen - royalty coming home to roost.

Staff was friendly and attentive. Rooms were exactly as described and shown on the internet. Food was amazing.

Details. Rooms were spacious. There was never a moment you weren't visually reminded this is a castle.

Bathrooms were luxurious and modern (ahhhh...a bath).
Free wifi in the rooms.
Window nook seats looked out over the well manicured grounds and that's where we spent most of our time in the room.

We opted for the four course dinner and were glad we did.
Oh, but first, the bar.
Off the main lounge area is a tiny bar (smaller than our room) - seating for 8...max, and not regularly staffed. We're pretty sure they monitor people in the bar via camera and only send in a staff person when someone enters the bar. The bar tender was friendly enough, but there was no mistaking this was not her standard work and as soon as our drinks were poured and on the bar, she was out of the room. If another group of people had not walked in, we might not never have gotten a second drink. However, we had great company in the newly arrived guests - nice to meet you family from Atlanta! Sorry the kids got sick from the Roman Bath water in Bath.

Back to dinner.
You go to the lounge and they bring the menu there. They take your order, and, if you want, bring you a drink. Then they brought us some complimentary appetizers: seaweed something and a creme something. The seaweed was good (better than non-seaweed eaters might expect) and the creme thing, though savory, was delicious!

Then we were shown downstairs to our table and dinner began with a slice of excellent bread. We spent much of dinner trying to figure out how to distract them so we could steal the full loaf from the cart.

All of our food was well prepared and pretty to look at as well as yummy to eat.
If you are staying here and have the opportunity to order anything with their strawberry honey on it - DO IT. I wanted to buy a vat of their strawberry honey, but they don't bottle it. Dastardly.
Excellent broccoli-nettle soup (skip the lemon sorbet, get that delicious soup).

Bed was comfy. Breakfast was not as complex as dinner, but was in the same setting and still well prepared.

Parking was easy and there was plenty of it available.
There did not seem to be much in the way of shops or restaurants nearby.
But the castle was easy to find (thank you brown heritage site signs).

This place has set a new tradition for us. We might not travel again without including castle lodgings in the plans.

We stayed in the DeLucy and the Cadwallader rooms.
Can't speak to the "castle-view" rooms.

Dear Bumble - I am truly delighted that you enjoyed your recent stay at the Castle and would thank you for posting the review - We have worked very hard on the standards of food and service and there are several dishes which have to "featured" on the menus due to such popular requests - I do hoe that we will have the pleasure of your company again soon - Best regards - Anton

Well where do I begin from start to finish the look of the Castle when you come up the drive 'stunning' to the very very helpful staff and the rooms are outstanding.
I booked the trip for a mid week stay for me and my partner for my 40th and so please I did. The staff were so helpful especially Aidan who gave the best service I have ever had and gave a great tour of the Castles Battlements. The rooms are spotless and very well presented and the grounds are kept immaculate. The Breakfast has so much choice and caters for all and the service from staff is outstanding. I totally recommend this Hotel and if you never stay here then you have missed out. We also got Tea/Scones and a cocktail bought to the room which was very well presented and was delicious. Without a doubt a stay to remember. Thank you Langley Castle and staff.

Room Tip: Every room is perfect

From driving through the countryside and seeing this castle tower!!! Dumbstruck!!
The castle itself is staggering , walls 7 feet thick, archer parapets even in the bedrooms so bring a bow and arrow!!. Decoration amazing overall, the Drawing Room is light airy and full of interesting items. Midnight Mark attends to your wishes for tea, coffee , sandwiches and drinks and guides you through the menus as well (he has a very dry wit and is an interesting young man).
The management...headed up by Anton, attention to detail is his motto and his team unfortunately didn't catch the names. He is planning with the new Chef a new taster menu and various dining options,
The girls on reception : Lou May, Steph and Joanne (An interesting choice in nail varnish and very high heels!!)
The Restaurant, you have a choice of two:
Table de Hotel: Inside the Castle
Grill Menu: The pavilion which is a contemporary glass structure approached through a glazed walk way
Food is brilliant, well cooked and presented.
The restaurant staff:
Aidan ( 'Don't tell my mum I can cook') a bright , entertaining young man, makes you laugh , very informative. Make a great crepe dessert (His sister is a chef in the kitchen who makes the crepes) he just loves pyrotechnics
The Brighton Belles ( Cassie - How do you do that hair!!! and Sophia, very chatty, amusing and informative)
Laura- very quiet, good sense of humour.
The other staff, are just amazing

WE WILL BE BACK

In essence:
Location : Brilliant
Staff amazing
Food to die for
all wrapped up in a time capsule

Room Tip: Room 1 Derwent water is great, not the best view but stunning 4 poster bed
