I stayed in the purple room at the inn. Such a great home away from home feeling. My room was HUGE! Beautiful bedding, great stone wall, fireplace, sitting area, working area with desk and wireless, enormous bathroom, thick towels and soft sheets. I slept like a baby.

The inn is in transition, getting great updates by the new owners. One suite is dog friendly--yeah! It would have been perfect if had my dogs with me. Whether you are traveling solo or with family; on business or for pleasure, the inn is a great choice if you want the conveniences of a hotel without the sterile environment. Definitely, a bright spot on the map!

Our stay at the Smithton Inn was terrific. The new host, Rebecca, took the strengths of the earlier owner -- the building itself, the quilts, the decor -- and added numerous touches, her own personal attention above all. The inn is elegant, yet comfortable. The breakfast was delicious, the coffee appropriately strong, and the cookies yummy. Rebecca is also curious and helpful about the historical sights of the area -- we appreciate the recommendation of Cornwall Furnace, a real find. Check the date of the reviews -- the mattresses and the graciousness of the staff have certainly improved.

We are a family of 4, with 2 mature 9+11 year olds traveling across America for 90 days of summer. Focusing on historical sights, historical Inns, off the grid camping, and quality recreation. The Smithton Inn (circa 1750's) is situated on a beautiful corner lot where while sitting on their covered porch, rocking away in a period rocking chair can spot an Amish family rolling by in a horse-drawn carriage.
Rebecca, the new owner and manager, has plenty of energy to help in any way! We sat in the back-courtyard enjoying wine and dinner while our children fancied the fireflys. Center stage in the morning is Rebecca fine, full and gourmet breakfast. Great experiece by all in our room featuring a comfortable four poster bed, large bathroom and interesting Amish literature, local quilts, fresh baked cookies downstairs in the living room. We met other interesting travelers as well- an important detail.
We recommend Rebecca's Smithton Inn! A memorable experience!

The Smithton Inn has been revitalized by the new Innkeeper Rebbecca. This is an outstanding Bed and Breakfast. The basic rooms are named according to their color schemes, and the one we stayed in (chocolate) far exceeded our expectations.

When we finally crashed in our room after a long day, we were extremely satisfied with the comfort and cleanliness of the accommodations. The details make a big difference, and Rebbecca has a keen sense for life's little pleasures. Guests are treated to cloud-soft linens and bath towels, customized soaps, and great shower pressure.

The service was the first thing that really impressed us. Due to the nature of our stay, we needed to be up and on our way by 6:30am. Rebbecca gladly offered to get up and prepare us a breakfast "to go" more than two hours before the scheduled time for regular guest breakfast hours, 8-10am. On top of that, she didn't just leave it out for us, she was available to serve us from the kitchen and make good conversation.

If you stay at the Smithton and have a great stay, which you are sure to do, make sure you give it a good review on this website. It is the type of place you would stay in again, and, in fact, go out of your way to revisit.

We were referred from an over booked area motel. What a pleasant surprise. Our rooms were clean and beds very comfortable. We enjoyed a nice afternoon snack and woke up to a scrumptious breakfast. The Innkeeper explained that they had just taken ownership a couple of weeks ago and we were pleasantly surprised at her knowledge of the area -
Rebecca recommended a wonderful restaurant which was surpased only by her incredible breakfast. We look forward to visiting again in the future and seeing all their plans for further improvements being brought to fruition.

We read about the Inn in 1000 Places to See Before You Die. Having seen several hundred of that book's recommended places, we're not sure why the Smithton Inn was included in the list. We truly appreciated some of the heartfelt gestures by the new owner (free upgrade to a bigger room, discount on the final cost, offering to watch our girls while we ate breakfast), and we don't like to complain, but bottom line: the Inn doesn't deliver what it advertises on its web site. The hostess is extremely nice and hospitable, and she makes a great breakfast, but for what it costs to stay there, we wouldn't do it again. The Inn is also located at the corner of a busy intersection, which you can't tell from the pictures, but you sure notice the cars driving by outside at night. We stayed in guest suite seven. To begin listing specific discrepancies, check in is noted as 4:00 PM. We showed up at 5:30 PM, waited around, no one was present, and finally took off at 6:00, only to be met by the hostess returning from errands. There were no afternoon hor d'oeuvres offered the first night (we had to ask for them the first evening and got some old box wine, pepperoni, ritz crackers and cheese), and we didn't get anything the second night. We never saw any "scrumptious, freshly baked cookies", didn't see the "pillow-top bed", and the "fine linens" turned out to have an unidentified large stain on the sheets... The "beautifully and thoughtfully designed decor" in our room included mismatched, odds and ends, very worn garage sale? furniture and drapes and decor from the sixties or seventies. The kitchen ceiling had a large crack and was literally falling down due to water damage. Even our alarm clock had parts behind it in a plastic bag. The yard left a lot to be desired with a dirty, algae and leaf filled pond, a garage with roof falling in, large pile of bricks in the back, and a huge hole on the side of the building covered with lattice (due to more water damage). We did not feel safe letting our 3 year old run around the yard with so many dangers. I'm not exagerating and trying to accurately portray what we experienced. We did enjoy talking to the hostess, who seemed very motivated to turn the Inn around. With all the work to be done, she has a lot to accomplish. The Inn has a great history that should be capitalized upon (brocheures in the rooms on the history of the Inn would be nice). Some simple fixes (ceiling in the room, removing the garbage cans and bags visibile outside near the wall upon exiting the room) would help. But where we expected a romantic getaway in a historic bed and breakfast, we found disappointment.

I’m grateful for any review or feedback from guests, even the ones like this that are tough to read, since it gives me priorities for things to fix up around the house that impact guests’ experience, and alerts me to ways I can do a better job myself.

There are a couple of both in this review… some were slips on my part (not being back in time for our guest’s check in, or not having the cookies made up for them), some are items already being addressed by renovation / clean- up projects scheduled this week and next (pond, yard), some will improve with time (décor & renovations) and a couple are mysteries…. I’m really not sure about the stain on the sheets, these were the first guests to sleep in the bed since the sheets were purchased and I didn’t notice the stain when I cleaned up. They also complimented the bed while they were here, said it was better than theirs at home. The pillow top is a 3 inch temperpedic top, and our guests seem to love them. As for the value, I’m not sure where else you could stay in a 3 room suite with a full breakfast and snacks (sorry they didn’t like them though…) for $100 per night for you and your two children. I thought we provided a pretty good value to our guests, but I see that perceptions can be very different.

In any event, I definitely hear what’s been said and will be addressing the items I can, PRONTO! I especially like the idea of a flyer with the history of the inn for the guest rooms… the Inn has a terrific story and I think it’s a good idea to make it into a brochure or flyer.

This B&B has had previous owners and has had mixed reviews. There is a new owner, and it was the best place to stay. The new owner is absolutely wonderful. The place quaint, relaxing, and simple. The breakfast is superb. Definitely worth staying on the outskirts, then taking the leisurely drive to wherever you want to go! Very centrally located.
