“Genuinely welcoming with great service in a beautiful building”
Reviewed 26 April 2010

We stayed for 4 nights at the Smithton. We were greeted by Rebecca and the housekeeper (Judy) both of whom were very welcoming and had a wealth of information about the area and the house itself.
Knowing that Rebecca and her husband had only taken over the Inn less than a year ago, we were amazed at what had been achieved. The place is sensitively and beautifully decorated, using antiques and Amish quilts in rooms each with a distinct colour scheme. Somehow the plasma tvs in the rooms didn't spoil the ambience (and a terrific collection of DVDs to choose from.
Breakfasts were very tasty, with home made granola, home made yoghurts and fruit salads and bread, as well as a main dish - plus cakes which were a bit sweet for our European taste. We di enjoy the quiche and the Strada.
We would thoroughly recomend the Smithton Inn

We recently spent a Saturday night at the Smithton and had a great experience. The innkeepers, Rebecca and Dave, were nothing short of enthusiastic about making guests feel welcome and at home.

After a hectic day of traveling and visiting local wineries, it was great to get back to the Smithton and stretch out on our very comfortable bed for some late afternoon quiet time. Early in the evening wine and cheese were provided along with some pre-dinner socializing. Sunday’s breakfast was plentiful and satisfying.

The owners have demonstrated excellent taste and attention to detail in bringing the venerable inn back to life. They’ve achieved a cozy, comfortable balance between historic charm and modern amenities.

At the Smithton, hospitality doesn’t end at the property line. The innkeepers are able and willing to provide you with insider’s information on the best things to do and see. They obtained our wine tour tickets and a suggested route for us, as well as made an excellent suggestion (and reservations) for our Saturday night meal.

My husband and I like to try different B & B's for a quick week-end away. The Smithton Inn was a great choice. The room (purple room) was very roomy, with a larger bed, fireplace and whirlpool tub. The Innkeepers were very nice and were well informed about the area. We enjoyed the conversations with Rebecca and Dave and getting a few hints about so many things to do. And of course the breakfasts were fabulous. Rebecca did a wonderful job of making and presenting the breakfasts. It is a recommended place to stay.

During our stay in PA we were amazed by the Smithton Inn, it is the most beautiful, charming B&B in which we have ever stayed. The Gallagher family were welcoming and gracious, it felt like we were staying with family... the side we like and of whom we want to see more. The location provides plenty to do and see, all in all a fantastic trip. A few places we will go back to see again... The Cloister, The Black Horse Tavern, and Hershey.

We read about the Smithton Inn in "1000 Places to see before you die" and were glad we made it our first stop on a southern trip. Rebecca and her family made us feel so welcome and were helpful in suggesting a dinner spot and local attractions. We had a relaxing glass of wine with them while hearing stories about the history of the Inn. We luxuriated in the most amazing sheets; you can buy them from her. Rebecca's breakfast was incredible. It is located on a busy intersection but we were tucked into a back room. They are updating the rooms with WiFi and flat screen TVs, while maintaining the original charm.

We stayed in the Purple Room for a 4 night weekend on our anniversary. The Inn offers a great Romantic Weekend package, where you get an in room massage and champagne, candlelight, flowers, etc! It really made our weekend special! The breakfasts are absolutely divine! We often skipped lunch we were so full til we finished...lol. Rebecca and Dave are absolutely great hosts! They were always willing to spend the time to make you comfortable. They are well informed about the area and give great restaurant advice.

We had the most wonderful stay at the Smithton Inn. From start to finish we received top-notch care and service. My husband started things off by double-booking us, and when he sheepishly called to see about changing the weekend it was taken care of without a fuss.

We arrived and were greeted by the innkeepers Rebecca and Dave as well as lovely Lucky the dog, and got a tour of the inn and its history. We stayed in the Red Room which was a wonderful choice, with its beautiful quilt and quirky raised tub in the bathroom. We got a great dinner recommendation, then came back and enjoyed a lovely peaceful evening by the fire in the big comfy chairs. Rebecca and Dave have thought of everything, from the cookies and hot drinks in the lobby to the snacks in the room to the makeup towel to the aromatherapy bath oil.

In the morning we had a delicious breakfast - the homemade granola and house juice (strawberry-pomegranate-banana) are not to be missed. Rebecca has the perfect knack for knowing when to pop in from the kitchen to chat or share a recipe, and when to disappear and allow for private time. When we checked out we were sent off with to-go bags of homemade bread and even a call to let us know we'd left something behind.

This kind of service and comfort matches what we've received at inns and B&Bs that are twice and 3 times the price. We'll be back!
