“Good Hotel, Good Breakfast. Shuttle? Not so much.”
Reviewed 30 September 2011

This was a pretty good choice for our brief stay on family business. Ten minutes from the airport, five minutes off I-95, the location was good. (There's a Mariott right in the airport though.)

Reception staff were friendly and efficient.

We asked for a quiet room, got the last room on the top floor, and never heard a sound. There was a nice view of the adjacent river and boatyard. The king bed was comfortable. The bedside lamps had convenient AC sockets. The bathroom wasn't the most modern, and had no hooks for clothing, but there were plenty of towels and the non-skid in the tub-shower was excellent. The bathroom door latch didn't catch, even after we mentioned it to the front desk.

The free breakfast packed an amazing variety into a small space. Scrambled eggs, sausage, crisp bacon, creamed chipped beef and biscuits, all kept hot. Bagels, sweet rolls, and hot cinnamon buns. Yogurt, cereal, a small selection of fruit (this isn't vegan country), and a machine that rolled out fresh-cooked pancakes that weren't very good, but the novelty was worth it. Other than the pancakes, everything was pretty good and the warm stuff was kept warm. Quite a good job for a little buffet. Could have done without the TV on ESPN though.

We didn't use the free wired internet in the room, but did use one of the two free computers in the Business Center off the lobby to print our boarding passes.

We returned our rental car the night before our early flight, to give us time for breakfast and not be rushed the next morning. The morning shuttle was fine, but getting it at the airport the night before was typical of some of the other complaints here. We called, but the driver picked up someone else five minutes earlier so didn't wait for us. After four more phone calls and 40 minutes we were picked up by a chatty driver who said far too much, but somehow omitted "I'm sorry for the delay."

One thing to watch out for - if you check prices using TripAdvisor, some of the reservations offered will be at The Waterfront, next door. The hotels have the same ownership, and used to be run together, but The Waterfront is a much older, and much cheaper, property.

I picked this hotel last night due to repeated flight delays. When I booked I was told there was a shuttle service every 30 minutes but I was waiting nearly an hour and a half for mine and this was after repeated calls to the hotel to find out where the shuttle was. What made it worse was that all other hotels which were listed (but tripadvisor reviews less favourable) had shuttle buses pass me at least twice and 3 of them passed 4 times while I was waiting. So unbelievably frustrating. Plus, this hotel is a good 10 minute drive away so bear that in mind when choosing.

To be fair, once I arrived, the staff were lovely and the room exceptionally clean with a really comfy bed and nice touches.

So, if you have to stay here, your stay will be comfortable, once you finally get there!

Thank you for your feedback. Since we opened this Summer, one of our challenges has been to find our guests at Philly International. Its an extremely difficult airport for travelers to be picked up from. Comments like yours has prompted us to invest in 2 way nextel radios and the ability to speak directly to the van driver (when needed and when its safe) so that newcomers to PHL can be picked up a little more easier. This wont totally eliminate the inconveniences that the Airport creates but we hope it will greatly reduce the number of frustrated hotel guests. Thanks again.

My Wife and I stayed here only for one night the first week of September. We wanted to stay longer! We came up to the area for the first time to visit the Harrah's Casino in Chester Pa. Only like 3 miles away. But we just went back up this past w/end but we decided to try the Wyndham Garden not even a mile away from Holiday Inn Express. What a BIG mistake!! Choose the Holiday Inn Express over Wyndham!!!
Anyways, arrived early and was able to check in. Very friendly staff. Very clean and organized areas. Hotel sits right on the water. If you are on the top floor looking towards PPL park you can see the fireworks clearly at night. The room was a surprise to us. Clean and big. Bathroom light comes on automatically when you walk in. Great tasting free complementary breakfast each morning. Just a very great and relaxing time even though it was one night. If you are in the area you need to check out the Holiday Inn Express in Essington PA, you wont be dissappointed.

After spending two weeks (for business) at the Holiday Inn Stadium, I decided to try something new due to a Philly's double-header and limited parking. Once I walked through the doors of the HIE in Essington, I felt at home. The desk staff were friendly and inviting and the rooms are very clean and comfortable. The beds are excellent! There is a restaurant/nightclub next door and the food is delicious. I would highly recommend the crab rangoon and battered shrimp. A comfortable clean room, decent restaurant next door, and warm cinnamon rolls in the morning - so close to heaven.

The HI Express is a new hotel that is on the Delaware River (no views) that seems to have been created from an existing building. Located about four miles from the Philadelphia airport, with shuttle service, the room was large with a compact bath and nicely decorated. The rate was lower than other airport hotels in the area and situated close to a river view restaurant/bar that serves good food at a reasonable price. At nine, it turns into a nightclub, which creates some minimal sound that impacts the hotel, however, the fan on the air/heat seems to neutralize it. The complimentary breakfast was more than adequate but the wi-fi was only available in the lobby and not the rooms. Due the low price, new rooms and dining on the river, this would be a property worth considering when a layover hotel is required.

Clean, new hotel located in a blue-collar neighborhood on the riverfront, between a park and a boatyard. Room was comfortable and clean, breakfast was fine, free shuttle to airport (5-10 minutes). However, the parking lot & entry area smells of fetid dumpster from the restaurant next door. Avoid rooms on the west side of the upper floors--another guest complained of noise late into the night from the nightclub next door
