“Comfortable B&B in Northwest PA”
Reviewed 29 July 2012

Wifey and i were traveling to visit relatives in the area. The house was full so we looked around. Always looking for an alternative to the standard hotel/motel offerings we found Witherup House, a turn of the last century (after a rebuild) home situated on one of the main streets in Franklin Pa. Reservations we a snap on email. We arrived later than expected for the evening but no problem. Ann and Marty welcomed us in--we had our pick of rooms on the second floor of the home. We settled on a room on the main street side-balcony off the room allowed us to sit out and enjoy the wonderful summer evening with a glass of wine. The room (on the second floor as are all the rooms) was clean nicely appointed with a comfortable king/queen bed. Common baths are clean and accessible for all the rooms. Good hot water and water pressure-plenty of towel age. And a kitchenette is available should the urge arise for a meal in. The breakfast was great, fresh fruit(strawberries from the backyard), cereal, yogurt, breakfast cookies, etc. The New Orleans style coffee was great. Marty offered to cook for us-we declined as we needed to be on our way-maybe next time.

The house (for being rebuilt in 1905) was in great shape-wonderful from an architechural standpoint. The history of the home and the area is fascinating too. Bend Ann or Marty's ear and you'll learn much about the town and the people that built it. Take a walk downtown, or a stroll to the creek where it meets the river. I am told this area is great for biking and kayaking-maybe on a future trip.

If you are traveling to this area Witherup House is definitely worth strong consideration.

The Witherup House is a beauty; each room unique and artfully decorated. Marty & Ann were awesome hosts--so friendly, accommodating, and super thoughtful. I stayed here the first night of a cross country road trip, and I'm so glad I did. I left feeling so refreshed and nourished (breakfast was delicious and included fresh veggies from the garden!). If I hadn't been on a deadline, I would have stayed much longer to read, write, rest, explore the trails along the river, and perhaps do some crafting in Ann's enchanting, sun-filled art room. Franklin is a darling little town in a gorgeous, lush region of Pennsylvania, beautiful to drive to. There are some cute local shops--I found an old hardback copy of True Grit at the new bookstore, Neverending Stories! I really hope to be back on my way back east or for a weekend escape from the city.

Looking for a place to stay in Franklin while we rode the various trails along the Allegheny River and lucked in to this place. Made our reservations via e-mail and were welcomed by Marty and Ann as we pulled up their driveway. Beautiful old house. Plenty of books, tv, etc. but we didn't spend any time at all downstairs. We had a very comfortable room on the second floor with a door to a large balcony above the front porch with lounge chairs, porch furniture, etc. Very nice bathroom, but have to share with other guests. Had a jacuzzi, but didn't try it. Kitchen with stove, refrigerator, plates, pots, etc. on second floor.
Owners are very friendly and helpful. Everything was very clean. Breakfast was fresh fruit, juice, pastries, meat and cheese, yogurt, granola. Offered eggs, but we had enough without them. Would definitely recommend this place and would sure stay again. Close to the restaurants in town, very close to the trail. On a main street which has some traffic noise when sitting outside but no noise in the room.

We were told about this place while on our walk across America, the Great American Walkabout. We stopped in Franklin, and were there for the AppleFest, an annual tradition that dates back to Johnny Appleseed. The local Area Chamber of Commerce told us about the newly opened Witherup House, and even called them for us.

It was an old home, I believe it was built back in 1805. It is a family home, and only recently opened to guests. Needless to say, it was beautiful inside and old, and was one of the most comfortable homes we had stayed in. There was a balcony overlooking the street, which made for a very relaxing evening, we spent some time having dinner outside and talking to reporters there.

Downstairs they have a music room, with a piano and some instruments, and a bookshelf with all kinds of music, as well as a large library with many books to read. There is also an art room upstairs, with paint canvas, and mixed media in case anyone feels creative or inspired while staying. In the kitchen, as well as throughout the house are some of the masterpieces created, I can assume by family or by other guests.

The hosts are wonderful and kind people, with big hearts and bigger smiles. The make an incredible breakfast in the morning, with more exotic fruits than I have ever seen in this part of the world, as well as eggs, waffles, and much more. It was an exquisite breakfast, worthy of note, and certainly the best we'd had on our whole trip across the country.

The beds were warm and comfortable, and the showers had great water pressure! They had a jacuzzi tub in the main upstairs bathroom, which looked really high-tech! It felt great after a long days walk. I think because it is indeed someone's home, this place really did make you feel warm, welcomed, and as comfortable as you would be at home, in an exquisite and spotless environment. It was a gem to find, and I hope you get the chance to stay here yourself.

They have a website as well as a facebook page, where you can see their photos and updates. You can just look it up as The Witherup House. They are right on Liberty Street in Franklin, PA, which was recently voted one of the Ten Best Streets in America! You can call them up for reservations, 814-437-7203. If you stay there, please tell them the guys from The Great American Walkabout sent you!

Room Tip: Be sure to tell them the Walkabout guys sent you!
