Nice museum next to the State Capitol. A little bit of everything from Civil War exhibits, fossils and dinosaurs and early American life. Great Civil War panorama. Nice kiddie play room area too.

This museum houses a variety of artifacts representing PA history, geology, technology, native species, and prominent citizens. There was an especially interesting temporary Civil War exhibit mid-October '13.

We visited the state museum on a rainy Saturday - good day for a museum. The admission price was great - $5 or $4 for seniors. The self-guided tour through Pennsylvania's history was very interesting - some things we learned were about William Penn meeting the Susquehanock Indians, the Charter from King Charles II given to William Penn to start the colony, archaelogical digs, Civil War & Gettysburg. Great place to bring children. Parking on Saturday & Sunday is free.

For many decades, this museum was free to the public but state budget-cutting brought about paid admission. Some of the continuing displays are growing tired, but the special (rotating) exhibits are always a nice change of pace. Nice gift shop.

There are three floors of displays that cover an amazing array of topics. Dinosaurs, geology, glaciers, astronomy, animals, and so many other items were covered. The displays were excellent and most of the accompanying descriptions were informative. Unfortunately, some of the exhibits were in darkness and it was difficult to read the descriptions They should put in some reading lights for those areas. Also, the flow of the museum was somewhat confusing and moving from one area to another sometimes left me feeling like I had missed part of the exhibits. There is a special area for activities for young children. There is also a café for snacks.
