We did a search in Pittsburgh for vegetarian restaurants during a weekend trip. Little trips and locally owned do not scare us away. We arrived to a clean space with friendly wait staff. Sunday is a brunch. There were sides and pastries with juice, teas and coffees set out on the bar. There was a combo of hot and cold good, the vegetarian chili and roasted potatoes were so yummy, as were the vegan no-egg muffins. Our main course for lunch including the bar eats was so yummy, that it took sheer will power to push the food away. The owner was manning the cookery kitchen store, and we had a delightful and pleasant conversation and I was excited to go home with a purchase. We were concerned when we walked in because there were only two other customers, but were so glad we gave this cafe a second chance because it was so good. We plan to go back during dinner, it is a plus that they have a full bar. The restrooms were clean and well-stocked.

On a recent Saturday night, we ventured down to boarded up Homestead, past site of a thriving steel mill, now suffering the depression and poverty that is the norm now along the Monongohela River in Western PA. Driving along Eighth Avenue, you would never expect to find this little bit of wonderful, but there it was: Tin Front Cafe.

Tin Front Cafe has charm, a community feel, and some of the best food anywhere. Fresh, quality foods are prepared with panache to order by the chef. The waitstaff too is communal, with the owner taking an active role in serving you along with waitress and bartender.
The bar has alcoholic and nonalcoholic libations. Dont miss the wonderful coffee. A DJ spun superb Jazz tunes, as it was Saturday night. Next door is the Annex Cookery, a kitchen-food shoppe that was unfortunately closed by the time we got there.

My S.O. ordered the four cheese Mac and Cheese and was delighted. Loaded with oozing, gooey cheese, accompanied by soft, cream sauce, S.O. exclaimed delight. I dug into Stuffed Eggplant. The eggplant layers were sauteed rather than fried, gooey ricotta and parmigiana regianno intercollated between. The dish was finished by a snappy marinara sauce.
Thanks to the owners for investing in the revitalization of Homestead. Thanks too for reminding us all that Vegetarian food is wonderful. All this in the middle of a town reared on Roasted BEAST.
